Im currently planning my next trip to the world and reading up on all sorts of things, had a thought though maybe someone can answer. The old fastpass machines always had their own little area and it was always heavily themed to the attractions, what did Disney do with these areas? Did they remove the machines and install benches or something? Just curious!

Pretty accurate. Some areas have become stroller parking (Toy Story Mania), some have had benches and/or trash cans added (Splash Mountain) or there's nothing really there since the machines were removed.

what brought on the thought was that Ièm re-reading my 1st edition of the hidden magic of walt disney bworls and they talk about the theming around the old machines for jungle cruise. I dont remember what all of the areas looked like (last trip was 2009 and there were MANY other things to commit to memory!) but I guess it makes sense. If they were just in an open empty area that that area is now simply open and empty, but the ones with elaborate theming would still be there in some form, why throw away all those props?

The former FP area for Soarin' has become a large wait area with more benches and ample space for wee ones to move around and stretch their legs. Not sure of the plans there, but if Disney placed something interesting for waiting parties to look at or do that would be great. Even if it's only temp.

If you look closely there is a small commemorative plaque in each area saying something to the affect of "This area housed the Fast Pass Machines for insert ride from date to date."

THAT is really cool and unexpected. I would think a company like disney that invests in new technologies would want us all to forget the old days when we didn't have to plan our fastpasses 2 months in advance :p

This just in......The plaques are being replaced with digital screens that read your Magic Bands and tell you what times your upcoming FastPass reservations are. Alas, the system is not up and running yet, so they will be covered with hard signs, that look like the plaques they just replaced.
