What happened to Kong?

Sorry if it's already been covered. This is my first time in the Universal forum. I know Kong was taken out of the park but can anyone tell me why? I really miss it.

Mummy.

The new attraction would be too expensive for Universal to build a new building for, and they didn't have the space on the side of the park that they wanted (New York). Kong was suffering from lowering rider numbers, and held the biggest building on property. So, Kong was removed (with a final bannana salute on Sept 8th, 2002) and Mummy was brought in to replace it.

RIP Bannana Breath. You will always be missed.

I know Kong had it's fans, but it was my least favorite theme park attraction ever created. I'm not a HUGE ROTM fan, but I do like it quite a bit better than Kongfrontation.

I'm starting to think that this showbuilding is cursed with the "Queue is better than the actual ride" Curse :) I think that is true for Kongfrontation and ROTM. Just my opinion though.

I miss Kong as well. As I have never ridden Mummy, I cannot say if it was a good decision or not.

BTW, Legacy, Whose Line is awesome! "There's blood on my stool!"

I will say one thing about Kong though, Universal really went all out for it's last day of operation. Kongfrontation got the proper goodbye salute that I can only dream Disney would do.

I will always respect Universal for doing what they did that day.

I havn't been to Universal since Mummy opened. I agree with you dxwwf3, the queue from Kong was awesome. There were tons of pennies thrown all over. I remember the fake news network showed a commercial for this old show called "Out Of This World". It was a real show, about a girl who's father was in a crystal pyrmaid. She would put her fingers together to freeze thing.
I hope I get to Universal sometime soon to ride Mummy. It seems like a cool ride.

Do I think Mummy was a good idea?

Absolutely.

Do I like it as much as Kong?

Not really. Kong was more of a family thrill ride than Mummy is. I don't think Kong was the best ever, but I think it was a dang fun ride and will always be a classic to me.

And Vader, I love Whose Line as well, and that line just sticks out too much to let pass by.

   Awwww
That really choked me up. When I was little I would sit in the middle of the car. On one side I had 2 brothers to protect me from Kong, and on the other was mom and dad. As I got older I got the guts to sit on the end and stare right at him. I'll miss it.
I wonder what happened to Kong (the animatronic)?

They did the banana salute among other things. Like letting the AP's know about the closure instead of trying to make it a secret. And they gave the AP's a special time to ride it on that last day. It really was a Kongfrontation Dedication day and it was first class all the way.

I think we should start signing the Mummy queque for old time's sake.

I wonder if Universal would freak out...

The King is dead. Long live the King.

And I'm so glad that sometimes fate intervines and bites people on the butt. What's more ironic than Peter Jackson announcing just a few months after Kong's closure that he'd be producing a remake. I'll bet good money someone high up in Universal is still kicking himself for this one, and I'll also bet they're already thinking on what the heck they're gonna do to tie in to this release.

They were destroyed, if I remember correctly.

Maybe if the movie does extremely well (which I think it will do), they could do a new attraction out in the World Expo....perhaps theming it to Skull Island?

They should bring back the photo-op though and put it somewhere in the New York area.....

I heard it was suppose to go to Hollywood and replace the one on their tram tour (because that was is REALLY old), but I don't know if that came to pass.

I'm not a Universal fan, but I always rode Kong when I went. Kong is such a classic character/movie. . . I don't feel the ride should have been removed. But I'm not really affected.

As for the banana photos. . . that's a good inspiration. :D

My dad's favorite ride at Universal was Kongfrontation. Luckily we rode it when we were there in 2000. Unfortunately my dad has HBP and isn't going to be able to ride Mummy. We have a picture with Kong from the photo-op area. My mom has a bad 80's style perm. I laugh whenever I see it. I should dig it out next time when I am home, for old times sake.

I should get a perm...

Anyway, the first time I went to Universal was right when Kong closed so I really don't care about it being gone. I really like the Mummy, but it is extremly short and faces some problems. It's hard to believe that such a small coaster could take up that entire building. (the coaster part is really just a figure-eight).

I got a video of the entire Kongfrontation on my other camcorder including queue and the full ride. Filmed in March 2002.

If you still miss kong go to USH (if you can) and go on the tram tour, there is a small scene with kong on the tour. Kong yelling, bashing a helicopter into the ground, trying to grab/eat your tram vehicle, panicked tram driver, it's not very long but it's better then NO kong at all.

I love mummy, but I wish they threw it into the Earthquake building and made the ride shorter, they took out ET adventure in USH and replaced it with a mummy ride.

I don't like Earthquake but latley Ive been warming up to the ride because it's one of the classic rides at usf left!

Some others being ET Adventure, Jaws, and Back to the future. Everything else is pretty much new!
