What happened to the originial Discovery Island (not the AK one). The one that you had to take a boat to and was a wild life preserve (mainly for birds).

I assume with the opening of AK it became repetative and moved what they could over?

Thanks!

Nothing was moved. The island still sits in Bay Lake like it always was. It's now one of those preserved wildlife areas on property. The original DI was like a really mini Animal Kingdom so when it actually opened, they felt no need for DI. A few years later, what was originally known as Safari Village at DAK was renamed Discovery Island in honor of it.

Actually because everybody thought Kilimanjaro Safaris was in Safari village.

I'm not sure about it being roped off. Disney might frown on you going on the island though. You can take one of those little boats over to the island and circle it to look around. I really wanna do that myself. I'm so fascinated by what's left over there and I have no clue why.

The dock is still there but there there are signs saying to keep clear of the islands. I wouldn't do it, not worth getting in trouble.

I wonder what was left animal wise, I am assuming only things that can provide for themselves and are native to the area. When I was a kid there was a park in the town I grew up in (West Milford, NJ) that was owned by Warner Bros. called Jungle Habitat. It had a drive through safari that was excellent as they use to let the animals like Lions walk around not fenced in (not too safe either). They also had a park area with cheesy rides, shows, petting zoo, animal rides, etc. They closed down because of complaints of animal escapes and left a bunch of animals as well as structures up there. I am not sure how the got away with it but did. Here is a link to a site that has information about it, it is a little creepy/weird. It is a good read though. Jungle Habitat
