What ever happened to Ghost Galaxy?

It hasn’t been seen since the 2018 Halloween Season, and maybe its return will never happen. But curious as to why since it seems like a easy switchover.

DL’s Space Mountain in normal mode, ever since the rebuild, is one of the most perfect rides on Earth. It leaves guests with a feeling of joy and exhilaration. It’s a genuinely uplifting, wonderful experience for anyone who can handle a moderately intense roller coaster. Why mess with perfection? I wouldn’t mind Ghost Galaxy as a Flip-the-switch Halloween Party Night bonus, but never again as a daytime replacement for one of the most fun and memorable adventures in Disney’s history.

Ghost Galaxy is gone because it was bad.

Hong Kong, which originated it, stopped doing the overlay long before Disneyland did (and lucky me, I got to experience both versions. Yay?) Disneyland's was slightly better than HK's, but not by enough to make it worth losing regular, iconic Space Mountain.

When compared to other SM overlays, Hyperspace (also bad, at least based on HK's version, sorry not sorry) is undoubtedly much easier to market and almost certainly pulls better numbers and guest satisfaction ratings than Ghost Galaxy.

Anyway, the fact that it hasn't been back for years suggests that they're no longer interested. Good. That's the way it should be.

Sometimes I'll turn on the Space Mountain soundtrack when driving, then blast the AC, crank up the stereo, close my eyes, and drive 90mph on the highway. It's like being right back at Disneyland.

I think Ghost Galaxy as a concept could still work if they revamp the soundtrack and flip the overlay daily like Mission Breakout (normal Space in the morning, Ghost Galaxy in the evening). GG wasn't ever particularly good but I'll miss the pseudo-jumpscare ending.

It’s hopefully in the garbage for good, where it belongs.

One hundred and fifty percent. You know that scene in Home Alone 2 where the lady throws bird seed onto the sticky bandits? The birds swarm all over them, urinating, defecating and puking as they eat their seed. That’s what Ghost Galaxy is like.

1000%. The graphics are just unimpressive. With today’s technology, something like Ghost Galaxy has the potential to be quite good. As it stands now? Not even close.

I still feel like 2005 Space with the Giacchino score is perfection (the ride experience at least-I could be persuaded to restore the queue, etc to a more vintage appearance), and that there's no benefit that has come about from trying to mess with it. Additionally, it has never made sense to me to slap an overlay onto something that is already one of the top two most popular rides in the park in its Vanilla Mode. What is the gain? So that Space Mountain becomes the first Genie attraction to run out of availability instead of the second? It's unnecessary, especially given that there were a fair number of people who didn't find the Ghost Galaxy experience to be all that great.

I know that the overlays are popular with repeat visitors, and there were clearly some who enjoyed GG, but part of the reason Country Bears, IASW, and (sigh) HM were/are logical candidates for overlays in the first place was because they had/have surplus capacity that wasn't being utilized to its fullest potential during the bulk of the year (this was much more true before those attractions got FP/Genie, but alas, Disney gonna Disney). Those attractions can draw additional guests from elsewhere in the park, and generally do a decent job at dealing with the increased demand. Space Mountain just doesn't have the same circumstances, so an overlay makes no sense. I imagine part of the reason Rockin' Space was shelved was because in addition to it not working, it proved unnecessary-the 05 version of the ride is sufficiently popular and hasn't noticeably dipped in popularity since then. And DL must not have felt that GG had developed enough of a fanbase to justify the effort (even though I'm sure it was fairly minimal) to switch it over, whereas Hyperspace (though still not my thing) can still draw a crowd and has a more vocal fanbase.

So in my eyes, Space just doesn't make sense as a viable overlay candidate, especially given the quality disparity between the normal ride & GG, and the park must have similarly come to the conclusion that GG wasn't good or popular enough to justify the changeover.
