What does Disney own?

Out of curiousity, what companies/entities does Disney own? I know that they have ABC-TV, ESPN, and the two professional sports franchises in Anaheim. Obviously, they have the Disney parks too. What I'm looking for are things they own but do not have the Disney name on them. Do they own Touchstone and Miramax pictures? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Touchstone, Miramax, Dimension, Buena Vista Motion Picture Group, Buena Vista Home Entertainment, Hollywood Pictures, Hollywood Records, Mammoth Records, ABC (along with 10 broadcast TV stations), over 60 radio stations, partial ownership of A&E Television Networks, Hyperion Books, Disney Publishing Worldwide (produces over 270 magazines)… This is some of what Disney owns. They control the second largest media empire in the world. There is really too much to keep track of..

Re: Re: Re: What does Disney own?

Even that doesn’t give you a true understanding of just how much they own because more than a few of these companies also own other companies. Miramax for example owns Dimension films (not on their list) which isn’t exactly nothing (that for instance, is where all the Spy Kids movies came from)… There are plenty of other examples like this out there but you could spend a LOT of time trying to figure it all out.

That was my point when I said too many to keep track of... I'm sure someone with the time *could* but at the rate that their ownership changes with new companies being purchased or created and others being closed down or sold it would probably be a rather full time job.

Oh, but while they still own (and are trying to sell) the Mighty Ducks, they have already succeeded in selling off the Angels.

The decision to ventur onto the sports team ownership fiel was, in my mind, Eisner's dumbest move (well, beside approving Pressler as DL's president :) ). It was a gigantic gamble; one that the company didn't need.

That falls under the subsidary of Anaheim Sports, Inc. Which manages The Walt Disney Company's sports ventures, which include Major League Baseball's Anaheim Angels and the National Hockey League's Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.

Anaheim Sports, Inc. also owns a stake in Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim and Edison International Field, the homes of the two sports teams owned by Anaheim Sports, Inc.

And I know one not on that list.... Wonderland Music. They produce all the sheet music for all records that come out on the Disney label(s). They also sometimes partner with Hal Leonard Music to release special compolations.

Disney also owns all of the ESPN Zone restaurants, DisneyVacations.com, Walt Disney Imagineering, Buena Vista Construction, all Reedy Creek/Bonnet Creek companies, The Celebration Company, and they own the rights to many upon many patents, copyrights, and registered trademarks & servicemarks. And I am sure there are still more not yet said.

Oh and I forgot, now after this merger of sorts, Disney also owns a huge chunk of the Jim Henson Company.

They also have a big chunk of MGM.

Thats one thing I have never understood with Disney, thats the MGM side. I have never understood how much of the company disney has, why Disney Land Resort Paris's second park was named "The Disney Studios" in stead of Disney/MGM studios.
If Disney own a big chunk of MGM why does it have no reference on the MGM title in movies (like where Warner Brothers have at the bottom "an AOL timewarner company") etc.

Disney Doens't own MGM at all. They have a limited contract for the use of MGM name and movies for Disney/MGM Studios. They didn't get one for the Paris studio so it's just the DIsney Studios.

Time Warner owns a limited amount of MGM's movies. Turner bougth them awhile back and then mergered into Time Warner. Thats why the Wizard of Oz has WB logo and MGM's logo.

Also Disney doens't put there brand name under the logo of other movie studios like New Line and under it say Time Warner. Look at Miramax, Touchstone, and Hollywood Picture no knowing Disney is the owner unless you know the company.

Instead of making themselves any bigger...they should get smaller...I think thats what they've attempted to do...but more has to be done...the corporation can not survive on greed alone...

:(

I do believe that Disney owns a large amount of Pixar stock.

And about MGM, Disney did "lease" their film collection and name, but the reason for the name change and change back and change again at the Disney Studios Orlando is that MGM kept suing Disney saying the deal was not to use the name on their theme park. If you want more info, read Work in Progress by Mike Eisner... it has good info on MGM/Disney.

But then many other companies could and would take them over one major reason Disney is so big is it is the last major media company not owned by some one else.
