What attraction has the best Special Effects? I say the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, but the Haunted Mansion is a close second, I would have picked the Haunted Mansion as #1, but the effects are so low-tech, it just doesn't seem right to me. At least ToT has fiber optics.

Tower of Terror! Something about the ghosts sends shivers down my spine EVERY TIME...and knowing that they are just projecting them onto a piece of glass made it all the more impressive and effective for me...It's turning 8 this year...I call it a disney classic hehe. They have to do something when it turns 13...in 2007

ToT is really amazing. The mix of horror and thrill is perfect, plus they want you to feel in the scary mood when you reach the drops.
But, Muppets 4D needs to be recognized, too. It was the first 3D movie that included extra-effects like bubbles and water, and later HONEY ISTA was really original. The first time I went, I was really shocked of the rats, theater moving, etc. They were a change for the 3D world.

My vote likewise has to go to Tower of Terror. It really is a logical choice since it's one of the newer rides in WDW. I love Space Mountain, but there's really very little in the way of effects, at least convincing ones. I don't find a projection of a chocolate chip cookie rumbling overhead every couple of seconds to be quite scaring, or the occasional shooting star. I think if SM gets a rehab, they could do a tremendous job with that overhead space view.

Specially while considering Haunted Mansion is 30 years old. It's true, it's technology was really advanced for the time. There are effects that nowadays amazes people which are aware of actual technology, and make people wonder "How do they do that?"
every time they ride the attraction.

Any clue about how Mission: SPACE will turn out? And don't say "a new type of ride experience." lol.

If it weren't for Tot, I'd say Honey.... I love that attraction, but the kodak film before it gets stuck in my head and it's really annoying after a while.

Alien Encounter! I can't believe that it wasn't even on the list! Remember the first time you were on it, that should be all the proof you need that it has the best special effects.

That's what Other is for. Alien Encounter to me has no greater special effects than It's Tough to be a Bug or Honey... Plus, I never really liked Alien Encounter.

Actually, CoP has lots of Special Effects...a whole lot...and they are very well coordinated...

But (besides American Adventure) Journey Into (not your) Imagination had so many... :( ...they are all destroyed now..:brick:

I agree with the earlier post. I can't believe that you guys left out Alien Encounter. That's the greatest ride, or should I say, Experience in the World. If you say that those special effects aren't good, then you haven't had YOUR encounter yet.

IMO, Alien Encounter doesn't really have that great of special effects, because, well, it doesn't really have any! Most of it is just sensory tricks and you almost never see anything except when the alien is in the tube.

Are these special effects limited to visual sensations?

By definition, an effect is "Something brought about by a cause or agent; a result" - Dictionary.com

Basically, it's faking an experience of some sort. In Alien Encounter, they use auditory special effects to make you think that an alien is loose in your testing chamber. They move the headrests to make it feel like the alien is right behind you.

In Horizons, they used smells to make you think that you were in an orange field. On Main Street, they use smells to make it smell like fresh-baked pastries.

And, of course, we have the visual special effects, which are the main topic of this thread. :(

For best overall effects, I'll go with good ol' Alien Encounter. Between the visuals, the smells, the sounds, the blood...err....water, etc. it really is the best combination of effects at WDW.

For best visual effect, I'll go with the Haunted Mansion. It still fools people today, and it still has most of the original effects.

Alien Encounter is one of the most over-hyped attractions in the MK and is extremely disappointing. If someone thinks a few puffs of air on their neck or a few spritzes of water on them while strapped down in a seat and looking at a poor example of animatronics is entertaining, well....that's just sad. It's a lame attraction.
