My family was at disney world last week and saw the walls up around something in the existing fanstyland next to the merry-go-round. What are they working on there?

I believe there was a planter in that area which they have removed. The new castle wall will go right through were Dumbo is now so they are doing preperations around that area for it.

I *think* it might be part of the Castle Walls design. But I could be mistaken.

That's what I think too. Seems like roughly the right place judging from the first piece of concept art (here). Although it looks farther away from the carousel in the artwork.

After looking at the area on Bing Maps, there was a planter there. With the planter gone, they seemed to have walled off enough space to start the new castle wall...assuming that's what's going on here.

I know they did remove some planters, but if I'm orienting myself correctly, the arial photo on this page, which is labeled August 1 shows nothing in this area. I remember the planer being there, but I think it's been gone for a while. Hard to tell though because the photo is pretty zoomed out.

Hrm, so I went looking through my pics. I don't take a lot of shots of the Carousel and surrounding areas apparently but I found some pics I took when Pinocchio Haus was under rehab. September 2009. They're not perfect but they do show more planters and tree areas in that region.

Thing is, I'm not entirely sure when they came down. Probably when Ariel's Grotto/Scuttle's Landing did? (That's just a guess.) Maybe they went down before that. Anyway, that's what it looked like in late 2009 anyway.

It looks like this is too close to the carousel for it to be part of the castle wall. But if they are planning on blocking off an area to start on the portion of the wall closest to the carousel then they may be doing work in this area to clear a way for more traffic flow due to the castle wall area being blocked off in the near future.

Of course if this area has been clear for awhile then this may not be the case.

Here is a diagram I did of the wall on top of the original plans for the area. The blue line is the construction wall that you can see in October 3rd Scott Keating pictures, and red line is the wall you can see in the most recent ground level pictures that were just posted (since that picture is from the ground it's hard to get a clear perspective on the wall so I might be a little off). The Scott Keating aerial clearly shows that planter was removed when the wall was in the Blue position. I am guessing the current wall is to just finish up the paving work in that area. I think it's to far away to be work for the castle wall.

They removed the planter a while ago. There were some walls two weeks ago that covered them redoing the ground there, because they left it looking pretty crappy after they removed the planter. It looks much better now. I'd assume that the walls right up against the carousel are also just for a repaving.

As for why they'd remove the planter: that's a high traffic area, especially when the area from the carousel to the castle is blocked off for the fireworks. The planter was probably just in the way. They removed the one by Storybook Treats for the castle walls, and they probably just figured they'd get the other one while they were at it, because it caused problems.

Looking at that drawing it really makes me believe that the planter was removed due to the increase in traffic that area will see once the walls go up around the castle wall construction area. That also makes the case for them getting the concrete work out of the way now because the castle wall construction will take several months and you will not really be able to close off that section to work on the concrete once the castle wall construction is walled off without causing a huge bottle neck.

I was just at the World this past week. When you are on Dumbo, you can see a wall foundation-ish shape rectangle cut out of the ground. It's definitely too long and skinny to be the remnants of the old planter, so I'd say they will probably leave the walls there until Dumbo closes and then get started on the castle wall construction.

actually.. This wall will inch along with the wall as it is erected.. As a section of wall is completed, this wall with 'travel' to the next work area.. They are starting in the 'middle' of the wall instead of an end because the wall construction to the right of it would impede the heavy lift equipment from accessing Dumbo in Jan/Feb..

Expect to start seeing 'wall' no later than December... Also, it'll go up a LOT faster than you think.. Steel beams with be erected, with truss steel supporting the cast concrete and electrical armature.. Then fixtures , paint, and move the construction wall down to the next section.... won't take long as there is much 'to it'.

Remarkable!

If this is true, then they have considerably changed the design of the castle wall. You can see in the diagram that I posted that the wall comes no where near the carousel. You can even see in the D23 model how far from the carousel it is. Take a look at the first picture on this site:

Looks to me like they're just finishing the walkway (to accommodate the increased traffic flow) - no conspiracy here. The new castle walls could potentially be built right on the other side of the existing temp walls currently separating old and new FL - looks like that's where they will go anyway.

EDIT - I see the new castle walls will be positioned more where Dumbo is currently, so I guess they'll need to extend out the current temp walls a bit.

Wow, very precise - I'm glad we have a member of Disney's construction planning team as a forum contributor.......

The intial part of the wall already exists just behing the main construction wall, it can be seen in a lot of the pictures. I assume that when they close Dumbo the constrution wall will be extended out to wrap around Dumbo so it can be removed and so they can build the next portion of the castle wall. The wall is supposed to end somewhere between Pooh and Snow White so they will eventually have to close down part of that walkway to finish the wall.
