Week of May 4th

Just returned from a Poly stay during the week of May 4th. I'll start by saying the crowds were much heavier than past early May trips (this is the 5th first-week-of-May trip I've had at the Poly). That being said, everything is relative, so relative to past May trips this week was definitely heavier crowds but still very manageable. As an example during past May trips there were virtually no waits in the MK...there were waits last week...see below...albeit minimal.

Monday May 4th: Arrived in Orlando at ~11:00am...flight was early !! Very nice ! Went down to Disney's Magical Express (first time I had used Disney transportation as we typically rent a minivan) and immediately boarded a bus that was just pulling out...no waiting...the bus was just about full. Arrived at the Poly (first stop) at ~11:45, ride over was simple and uneventful (just how I like it...) I had used on-line check-in (it was also my first time using on-line check-in) and simply walked up to the counter and everything was waiting for me...well, almost everything !! The Poly had no record of my multiple requests for room placement (I know Disney can not guarantee requests). What was most troubling is that I spoke to a Disney rep (Grand Gatherings) no less than six times about my request, they claimed they put the notes in my reservation...and I also faxed the Poly directly twice the week before we arrived...and still no record of my request.

Off to the MK... a nice hot day, probably around 85 degrees at 12noon. First ride for the kids was Buzz (posted 20 minute wait, actual wait time was ~8 minutes). Then off to Mickey's Philharmagic....no wait (we'll unless you count the wait of 5 minutes for the theater doors to open from the previous show). Peter Pan, as usual, forget it, 40 minute wait and FP return of 3:30. Off to the HM (posted 20 minute wait, actual wait was ~9 minutes). I had not been on HM since the upgrade...so the upgrades were a treat for me... then to PoTC (posted 10 minute wait time, actual wait ~5 minutes).

I was glad to see the frozen bananas had made a huge comeback in all the ice cream stands in the MK !! It seemed during my last few visits the frozen banana was near extinction in the MK and could only really be found in the AK and one or two spots in DHS.

Off to Crystal Palace for an early dinner...the buffet was great for the kids and the food was certainly above average for a buffet. Not too much of a change in the menu since the last meal there in '07 but plenty of variety.

Back to the Poly for dip in the Volcano pool and a few cocktails for the adults. Nice to watch the electric parade and Wishes from the Poly while lounging on the beach.

All in all a good day 1 !!

Tuesday May 5th (Day 2): Another crystal clear, 85 degree day. I'm a fan of showing up to a park when it opens...so Day 2 on trip was no different....back to the MK upon opening. And in typical fashion made our way to the back of the park to Splash (or as my daughter likes to call it, the Zippidy Do Da ride) and BTMRR. There was no one in FrontierLand at 9am...but Main St was jam packed...busier than I had ever seen it in May. It reminded me of a March school vacation trip that I took in '06. Anyhow, walked right onto Splash, no wait. By the time we got off Splash there was a 10 minute posted wait in BTMRR, actual wait time was ~5 minutes. Went back over to PoTC with no wait. Now it was getting near 10am and the crowds had made their way into the "Lands". Jungle Cruise was a posted wait time of 40 minutes and the actual was 40 minutes... PoTC was up to 20 minutes, Splash was up to 40 minutes and so was BTMRR by 12noon. We had a quick lunch at Peco Bill's and eventually made our way out of the crowds and headed over to DHS.

DHS, also seemed quite heavy, in terms of people traffic. TSM was 50 minutes wait at 2:30pm with FP sold out for the day. RnRC and ToT were 30 and 40 minute waits. Posted wait on Star Tours was 20 minutes which was about accurate. Went over to the 4:15 Indy show, the theater was about 3/4 full. Had a rather early dinner at Sci-Fi theater and they had screwed up the reservations and could not seat us in the cars which was very disappointing...especially for the kids. Walked right onto the GMR right before closing and then got to watch the new American Idol finale outside (right next to Mickey's hat) on a giant TV screen (the finalists clearly had some singing experience they were not your typical walk-ons from the "street"). Back to the Poly by 8:30pm or so for a couple of hours in the pool.

Enjoying your report! Keep it coming... Wonder why the crowds in May are all of a sudden so heavy this year? May used to me my favorite time to go to Disney b/c of the lighter crowds and beautiful weather.

Wed May 6th (Day 3): Started out the morning with a nice dip in the Volcano pool at 6:30am...amazing how warm it was...again, I've been to Orlando in May many times in the past...never this warm that early in the morning. Anyhow Tiki Bar was NOT open at this hour ! :ROFLOL:

Started to make our way to Blizzard Beach first thing in the morning for the 10am opening...waited at the Poly for a Blizzard Beach/AK bus...waited...waited....waited...OK, you get the picture. Boy, that minivan rental that I bypassed this year was looking like a bad call. Finally after 45 minutes of waiting I grabbed a cab at the Poly to Blizzard Beach and was more than happy to pay the $11.65 (without tip). Got to BB at 10 on the dot. Parking lot was about 1/5 full and about 300 people waiting at the gates...not too bad. When the gates opened we were inside in 5 minutes...and got any choice of seating we wanted. I'd say by about 11am the place was getting rather busy but still plenty of room. All the "rides" were about 5 - 10 minute waits...Slush/Gush and SumPlum were about 20 minute waits...another hot one...90+ degrees. Lost my sunglasses on Runaway Rapids but luckily they were $10 Walmart specials !!! (If you find them for me no bother in returning them...:ROFLOL:) BTW, the minidonuts were tastier than ever !!! After lunch and a few BudLight Limes we headed back to the Poly...the bus arrived within 10 minutes but was jam packed...standing room only all the way to the Poly (first stop was the Contemporary and no one got off !!)

Cleaned the kids up and right back on the Monorail to EPCOT for an early dinner at Tutto Italia. This was my first visit to Tutto and I must say the food was rather good. I had just been over to Rome and Sorrento in The Fall and Tutto Italia (although not even close to being in Italy) did a very nice job with the atmosphere, food quality and selection....so I give it a solid thumb's up. After dinner (and few glasses of wine and limoncello) we made our way to Soarin'...forget it... 75 minute wait and FP sold out for the day (no surprise). Hit a few rides...took the kids on to HISTA and watched them freak out (kids ages varied on our group from 4 to 7). Crowds in EPCOT also seemed very heavy, I was amazed how many folks were walking through the World Showcase...very little room to walk around... Wait times were all in the 45+ minute range.

Back to the Poly Volcano pool...turning into standard protocol with the kids at this point...until about 10pm.

Thu May 7th (Day 4): Good news, the Animal Kingdom bus showed up at the Poly within 5 minutes of waiting (timed it right !!). We were at AK's gate about 15 minutes before opening...I'd say a good 500 - 1000 people in line waiting to get in... Headed straight to the Safari and it had a 30 minute wait posted, actual wait time was about 15 minutes. Basically it was the flow of foot traffic from the opening. There were a fair amount of animals available for viewing (giraffes, black and white [vite] rhinos, gazelles, elephants, etc.) were all "performing". The lion was viewable but asleep under a tree toward the top of his habitat. Seemed they were rushing the ride. My guess is they were trying to get as many rovers out on the safari and space them as quickly as possible....so sometimes it doesn't "pay" to be that early !! Went over to Dinosaur with a 5 minute wait, Everest 10 minute wait (although we FP'ed from earlier), and of course Kali had the standard 30+ minute wait. I just don't like that particualr ride...something is missing for me...perhaps it's just too short.

It was shaping up to be a very hot day...and after "It's Tough to be a Bug", lunch, and few more rides we decided to leave AK by 3pm and get back into the Volcano pool to wash off the "road grime".

We cleaned up and started to make our way to the Contemporary for dinner at California Grille. Got up to the monorail at the Poly and waited 30+ minutes for a monorail. The CM stated there was an "issue" at the TTC. I've never seen such a wait but I suppose there was either a mechanical issue or a medical emergency....but who knows. Got over to the the California Grille and had a decent meal....good sushi, filets, and wine !! Walked over to the MK and made our way into the Lands. Since people were getting ready for SpectroMagic we had all the rides to ourselves...on/off Buzz, on/off IASW, on/off PPF, on/off HM...and then over to Splash...actually rode it three times without getting off ...since there was NO ONE in line the CM let us stay on and reride....same thing over at BTMRR....after three rides on BTMRR Wishes had just started so we watched from just outside BTMRR. The crowds were heavy but since everyone was on Main St for Spectro and Wishes it made for no waits !!

All in all a very solid trip this year...it's tough to explain the crowds...foot traffic seemed very heavy but wait times were very reasonable (I thought).

We had a couple more days of adventure but I'll spare you all of my ramblings...I just wanted to give folks a sense of the crowds last week. I'll also post some pictures within the next day to give a better sense of the crowds.

Starting to plan our next visit as I type !!
