WED-Dimensional Joyride - Current Model - Western River

Welcome to the little wed-dimensional joyride, folks. This thread is to post progress on my big "Pet Project" I've been working on.

Being fans of WDI over the years, we've heard of so many concepts and have seen so much artwork that has never come to be. That being said - I think it'd be entertaining to see these "concepts of the greats" in real-time current environments in the parks.

And if you've ever tracked me on the forum, you know exactly which lost concept I'll be working on... first.

A four story, 255 ft, show building. This was a big bad behemoth would have housed three attractions, a restaurant, and railroad scenes that would have given Disneyland a run for it’s money.

Let’s take a joyride to when Disney was planning a John Wayne version of Pirates of the Caribbean.

Is the cliff pueblo just a facade or can guests go in there?

Great question!

From the previous documents, it looks like just a facade. However there was an Indian village planned to be at the top of the building, including other features. May have been a weenie to draw people in for that?

On top of that, it does look to cross section the runaway train ride that was planned as well, which could’ve been a fun showscene if it had static AAs similar to DLR’s Rivers or WoM.

Really, with the entirety of the Thunder Mesa complex, Western River Expedition attraction is the most known informationally out of all the projects, just because of how much was already modeled. 🤷‍♀️ There’s some info on the runaway train, and very little on the canoes and restaurant.

While we're discussion the exterior- Let's also talk about how the size would compare to the rest of Magic Kingdom.

magic_kingdom_model_western_river_expedition_thunder_mesa.jpg

A lot of people noticed that it was a massive show building - but very few concept what 255 feet would have done for the Magic Kingdom skyline.

Splash is 87 feet, Cinderella Castle is 189 feet, Space is 183 feet, and Thunder is 197 feet.

In other words, this would have absolutely dominated everything in the park.

Now, going further into that. At the time of Cinderella Castle's construction, any structure taller than 190 feet tall would have required a red, flashing aircraft beacon on top of it.

As time went on that was expanded to 200 feet, but that would still require some sort of strobe light on this structure.

Again, no news on how that would've happened - but what in interesting showpiece challenge to have a red blinking light make sense in Frontierland's story timeline.

Anyone have any thoughts as to how they would thematically pull it off?

I'm more concerned that Haunted Mansion's queue is uncovered and this is FLORIDA!

Well... Let's do some CPR on this thread.

The goal has transitioned to photoshop and AI to mix to get stronger interpretations of these. Probably AI to create the simulation of the animatronics, and then photoshopping the sets to keep the Mary Blair and show set realism alive, as well as air brushing the character skins and making the video go.

I know there's some reluctancies to using AI and ChatGPT for coverage, but the thought it to use proper promting and continual establishment of Marc's values of the project to create realistic beings. It's really a longer process, but it will give the most hype realistic ride POV possible. Also - maybe someone watching my chaos may be less chaos and better design for someone else🤣

To demonstrate - I'd like to introduce you to my Guinea pigs.

Screen-Shot-2017-01-27-at-1.12.27-PM-1.jpg

On the Right - We'll call him "Gunner Gus" - the Left we'll call "Robber Ralph" just to give context when creating these guys.

I won't bore you with prompting chats - But I will show the highlight reel.

Too Hyperealistic.

THAT!

Which for 1970s World of Motion Styling AAs? No. - But - We're getting really close with Robber Ralph on the last bit. Though not true to the dark eye circles of Marc, the bone in the face as well as the eyes are very Pirates-esque. That face? Spot on. Just need to nail the photo posing and mimic it with Gunner Gus over there. Dark Eyes? I can add makeup later people. I'm focused on the actors.

So Prompting for the Robber Ralph on the left:

Pose & Body Mechanics
  • Base Pose: Crouched down behind the safe with revolver in hand, leaning forward with tension in the shoulders.
  • Torso Tilt: Slight forward hunch gives him a defensive, “ready-for-action” look.
  • Head Angle: Eyes narrowed, chin down, scanning for danger.
  • Hand & Prop Integration: One hand on the revolver (resting against the safe), the other bracing the safe for stability.
Facial Styling
  • Animatronic Features:
    • Exaggerated brows for expressiveness.
    • Wide, slightly squinting eyes with strong eyelid mechanics.
    • Highly detailed mustache and beard sculpting with visible texture in hair strands.
    • Subtle but clear wrinkle lines around forehead, eyes, and mouth for “life-like” expressivity.
    • Eyebrows capable of tilting for suspicion or aggression.
    • Jaw motion synced to “gritted teeth” or muttered lines.
    • Eye darts for scanning the horizon.
    • Micro head movements (small shifts) to simulate alertness.

Finish & Aesthetic

  • Costume: Keep the purple coat, red kerchief, and cowboy hat from the first image, but weather the fabrics so they look dusty and lived-in (like Pirates of the Caribbean animatronics).
    • Semi-translucent skin tones layered for realism.
    • Slight sheen on the eyes and lips for “wet” effect.
    • Hands painted with subtle dirt/weathering to feel authentic.

Audio & Synchronization

  • Voice Track: Gruff outlaw voice, muttering about holding the safe or warning his partner (“Keep yer eyes peeled!”).
  • Sound Effects: Subtle creak of boots and safe, revolver clicks when the hand twitches.
  • Lip Sync: Mechanical jaw syncs to dialogue, with random idle murmurs when not speaking.
  • Idle State: Eyes scanning, light breathing motion, revolver hand twitching occasionally.
    1. Raises head sharply, eyes dart toward riders.
    2. Growls or mutters a warning.
    3. Revolver hand tightens, small recoil animation simulating readiness.
    4. Returns to tense, watchful idle stance.
  • Recreate the bandit animatronic in his crouched/safe-hiding pose.
  • Place him into a Western River Expedition–style set with barrels, crates, lanterns, desert backdrop, and ride-style moody lighting.
  • Deliver it in the same style as the Pirates of the Caribbean ride photos you attached (wide angle, atmospheric, full animatronic scene).
raw

Now, yes, it has left out Gunner Gus, but let me focus on Robber Ralph's final touches. Also, let's ignore the landscape design, as that will be changed as well.

Let's give him some breathing room in the image and make the nose and hands look a bit earlier AA like. I've attached some photos of POTC from the auction scene of the Pirates Photo reference book on disneydocs.net for Tokyo.

Yes - but the Bandana's a no. Still needs more a World of Motion goofiness to the character as well.

This is where we're leaving him:

Stay tuned to see me give Gunner Gus a shave, tone his clothing to match the original rendering, and fix his features to mimic World of Motion AAs a bit more.

So, update on Gunner Gus - I photoshopped a few elements from the prior options together to get this

0aab2d67-1335-414b-aa68-a8cad87af925.png

Then I told AI to "Can you blend this in to look more natural? THis is a photo of a disneyland pirates animetronic" - simple prompt - but very effective.

"

Which - yes but we need to make it look more 70s - more 80s. More World of Motion centered - a few more runs and...

And honestly - Super close to source material. I'm calling it! We'll focus on replicating the pose next round.

So, this is gettign interesting - I always feel prompting is 3 steps forward and 2 steps back. I've been playing around back and fourth with ChatGPT and Gemini - and THIS is where we're at folks!

I give you these references....

AND THIS IS WHAT WE HAVE PEOPLE

Which, to be honest, feels very mad genius. But we'll see how this progresses and if I can pull this off - heck, Beatstly Kingdom is next...

Don't ask me how I did it more than that - hopefully the more I go foreword it'll help others show how I pull it off with their own creations - for now just enjoy the ride to nowhere in particular 🤣

Let's see where the rest of the ride takes me! Any character requests for next round for this project? They all need done so... drop a concept of what you want to see and that'll be the next project!

so as long as it began -

GunnersFinal.png

The Quicker it will become - we're using all the tricks in the book - and at that point, that means we're using a "Gem" with Gemini or and "Agent". This Gem I will name "Marc" with the following instructions:

Create a high-quality concept art image inspired by Marc Davis's unused 1970s Disney attraction Western River Expedition. Capture a whimsical, cinematic Wild West town scene, with exaggerated cartoonish architecture and vibrant sunset lighting. The setting should include an old western bank, saloon, general store, and red rock canyon cliffs in the background.
Populate the scene with stylized cowboy characters mid-action — one hiding behind a safe while firing two pistols, and another bursting out of a door with a revolver. Ensure the characters resemble the style of 1970s Disney concept art: bold outlines, exaggerated expressions, and vivid, flat colors.
Blend traditional hand-painted concept art textures with modern 3D rendered lighting and shadow, similar to how Photoshop and AI have been used to enhance old art styles. The ground should be stylized red desert terrain, and the buildings should glow warmly as if lit by a golden hour sun.
Reference images for style and characters include:
– Disney concept art from Western River Expedition (1970s)
– Stylized safe, red terrain, and characters from the provided final render
The final image should look like a revitalized and modernized version of classic Disney attraction art.

I also added in photo references for "Knowledge" section the concept art from Marc and the Final Gunners Above.

From there, the Gem "Marc" is complete, and I asked Marc the prompt:

1759074274008.png

Hey Marc! Help me render this character and set to the attraction. 1. I'm referring to the provided image. 2. I'm using a set similar to this with the reds and rocks for the specific environment 3. This is for a boat ride style attraction, similar to the pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland 4. Maybe he should be focusing on something else - just not noticing that the prisoner has dug a hole under him.

Which led to this:
1759074253675.png

Really good start - let's see how quick we can make this one!

I FOUND THE SECRET RECIPIE

Tell Marc "This needs to be designed into audio animetronics from the 1960s like pirates of the carribean at disneyland" with whatever image.

Yeah, I feel smart-ish. Look at this folks!

They're not perfect - but - Ye Haw! That's close. Close enough - this project may be done by November. Let's run the rest of the concept art since we're on a roll today.
