Am I outta the loop or what? I have never heard of "Gay Day" at Disney World. When did this start? Exactly what is the point of it?
You're not the only one who doesn't know about "Gay Day" I overheard one guest asking someone, "Is there a convention going on and everyone has to wear red??"
It started about 12 years ago when some folks decided to get a group together and go to Disney... and it kind of started a tradition. Originally, the first year was about 20-30 people... This year, I'm guessing 20,000 people. LOL It happens on the first Saturday of June... (However, the days before and after, there are other events that go on off property... )
Keep in mind... this "event" is not a Disney sponsored event. The only part Disney plays is that they are aware of it, and increase park staffing to accommodate. As we all know, Disney is a very diverse company, and welcomes each and every guest. After all, their money is just as good as your money. hehe
As for what goes on... I was at the MK today, actually... wanted to see what it was all about and stuff... It was just like a normal day... kinda crowded... and lots of people just happened to be wearing red. Had they not been wearing Red... no one would have ever known a thing. I was actually quite pleased to see that everyone was behaving properly... I have heard in years past that some people would try and turn it into a "In your face" kinda thing. However, I think in recent years, people now just come to have fun, just like everyone else.
I only saw maybe one or two people that I would personally consider "inappropriate" for Disney. (And one of them actually happened to be a straight woman, pregnant, and only wearing short shorts, and a bikini top... I know pregnancy is a miracle of life, but at Disney, I personally think that needed to be covered up.
As for the exact point of it all... it's just a gathering of people, who want to have fun. Nothing more, nothing less.
Coming from a Cast Member perspective... we love Gay Day... it's a lot of fun for us CM's, because those guests wearing red tend to be more relaxed, and more fun to interact with. I remember one group in the front of the monorail... when I was speiling that we were waiting for traffic clearance, they'd get on in the background and try and tell everyone that they were up in First Class enjoying wine and cheese... LOL... they were probably the most fun group I'd ever had in the monorail.
