WDW in September

I'm a seasonal Disneyland cast member and am thinking of making a trip out to Florida this September. I've been in August before and know something of what to expect from the weather (though I am hoping it's a little less humid). What I curious about is the possible effect that hurricanes might have on my stay. If I went for a week in mid-September, how likely is it that my visit would be affected by a big storm. I seem to recall it being very rare that a hurricane actually reaches central Florida, but I want to make sure before I book a week-long trip only to be sheltered the entire time. Thanks for any help.

well we went down 2 years ago in september & the week we were there a hurricane went just up the gulf but missed us. the week before they were hit hard by a hurricane & the week after. so yeah it can hit but you are also in the middle of FL so you don't get it as bad if it does happen. we are going this sept too but the end of sept 27 to oct. 2nd

Same concern.....

I am also very concerned about the hurricanes since last year my vacation was ruined by a hurricane. That is why I picked WDW this year since I figured the chances were much less since it so far inland. My trip is already booked because I figured go for it. I have only been there 2x in my life and I'm like a little kid. I can't wait!!!!!:sohappy:

We usually go down in May every year but had to postpone to Sept. I'm in the same boat--I'm worried about hurricanes since this is our yearly vacation! If there is bad weather, it's just the sooner we'll have to get down again for real 'r and r'!

It will still be humid and hot in September and you are in peak hurricane season. This year, they are predicting another very active season.

The outlook calls for a very active 2006 season, with 13-16 named storms, 8-10 hurricanes, and 4-6 major hurricanes.

Disney itself is a decent place to be during a storm. They've taken strong hurricane readiness initiatives and because they're inland, wind damage and storm surge isn't as bad of an issue as coastal areas.

However, it's not uncommon for airports to close, for there to be shortages on gas and supplies since storms cause a run on stores which are unable to restock fast enough and which will also close during bad weather.

It is a gamble. The hardest thing is how your trip will be impacted if you can not get there, or you can not get home. If a hurricane is coming through the area, there tends to be a couple days warning - though paths are completely unpredictable and can change course, direction and speed at a moment's notice.

If you are at Disney during a hurricane, you should be safe. But you will be stuck in your hotel and you might be impacted in travel plans to get back home.

i was there last year at the end of sept., god was it hot & humid, a storm did pass south of WDW when i was there, but it didnt ruin anything. we got alot of rain for about 2 days, but it wasnt constant. i took the risk with the weather, bring some ponchos & if its raining go on Kali river rapids alot, you wont notice!!!. i have been lucky on all 5 trips and the 3 during hurricane season were almost perfect weeks of weather, take the risk , its always worth it to be in WDW.

I've found that mid to late September is the perfect time to go. I've gone in 01, 03, 05, and now 06......and so far have never had to deal with any hurricanes, and always had a great stay.

This will be our 4th trip in a row in the end of September. Last year was the only trip that we encountered rain. Unfortunately it was for MNSSHP and maybe off and on 2 more times. It also is very hot 90 ish.

We go and have gone every year in September for the past 8 years. We start our vacation the Friday after Labor Day weekend and stay for 10 days.

Only once during all that time did weather really effect our trip. In 1999, there was the threat of a hurrican and Disney closed everything up, but it went past us.

In 2001, there was a tropical strom that moved through. It did rain really hard one day, but the parks were open and we could do everything.

Other than that. We have always had great weather. We will be back this September at the same time again!

There is a slight chance that the time you pick could be impacted by a hurricane in Sept. But the probability that the exact time your travel there will be a hurricane is low. And even if one did cross central FL, the weather will be at it's worst for probably only 2 days. When this has happened to us, Disney made every accomodation that they could to make sure we were comfortable and still having a magical time.

You might want to make sure you have budgeted for an extra night in a hotel and don't make any plans that would necessitate being home the exact day you plan, because as others have said when airports close and flights are cancelled, that's when you can be in a bind. But if you are ready for anything, you should have a great trip!

I think it was 2 years ago that hurricane either went through Disney or came pretty close. They ended up cancelling the Disney Triathlon due to it, that was at the end of Septemeber
