WDW In August...

I guess it depends on when you go. Late August is much lighter than early August since most of the southern schools go back in session in August.

We went Aug 14-18 back in 2011 and I think Touring Plans had every single one of our days between an 8 and a 9. I was terrified that the parks would be a crowded mess, but to my surprise...the crowds were really pretty light. It was a pleasant surprise.

Early August is not great, but late is very nice crowd-wise. We were there last year during the last week of August, and the crowds were not a problem. The heat and humidity, on the other hand, were horrendous (and I'm no stranger to heat/humidity living in middle GA). Weather can also be an issue, though it's usually just a daily shower in the PM.

Those are the exact days we are going this year. My son doesn't want a party for his b-day, he wants to go to Disney, so that's what we are doing for him. We haven't been in the summer in years so I hope it holds true again this year. We start school here in South Florida on the 19th.

i have been there several times in late august. LATE august crowds are very light! everything almost a walk on- 20-30 min for the Mountains, etc. (except of course TSMM- always a long line).
i highly recommend it, but it's hot, hot, hot.
we bring the cooling towels, re-chargable big size misters, take pool breaks, and table service lunches for the air conditioning.
did i mention it is hot, hot, hot?
but we think it is worth it for the crowd control.
count on an afternoon thunderstorm every day, but that is true all summer

@RedDad, now that we both have the same frame of reference, how was your last year's August trip compared to this June's trip, heat and humidity-wise?

August was much worse. I was literally soaking wet for most of the August trip, and it wasn't because of rain (although we got that too.) The humidity was noticeably lower during this recent trip, and it just wasn't as hot. We very well may do early June or late May again, but not August!

One other thing we noticed about this recent trip is a return of our appetites. It was so hot back in August that we just had no desire to each much. Not so this time!

Thanks! I will seriously think about scratching August off our list of options.

To be frank - the only negative to WDW in August is the heat. It is unbearable hot, humid heat. However, if you drink plenty of water and take advantage of the early morning hours and leave afternoon - then come come back early evening - you will get plenty of attractions in as well as a good lunch and or dinner. As for the crowds - I do not mind them. I do mind the fact that when it si 100 degrees and pure sun and people do not take the proper steps to ensure hygeine. I have been known to bring out my personal air freshner and spraying in while waiting in lines because people smell all too bad. Sorry - taking a shower in the pool is not acceptable behavior for any age! And do not let it rain - OMG those disney buses are a sight to be had with the awful smell from people. Anywho - I drive my own car and beat the crowds in August. I will be going back for the 4th of July (the worst time of year) as well as early August.

In 2010 we went the middle of July for 2 weeks. In 2012 we went the 3rd week of August (to take advantage of free dining). In 2014 we are going in the middle of July. I mean July is hot but August is HOT!!! It rained every day, and for more than 30 minutes some days. In fact, our Fantasmic Dinner Show was canceled due to the rain. In all honesty, crowds were less in August but the rain and the heat are not worth it for us.

I hate to break it to you, but you are not going to do much better in July, if heat and rain is your concern. Average wise, it actually rains more in July than August, and the average temps are hotter, not to mention the summer break crowds.

well I am basing in on our personal experiences and July is better than August for us!
I was there in 2012 the same time you were, and it was abnormally hot and rainy last year for August (see the report link in my signature).

Of course, you have to make a decision that makes you happy, and I in no way question or fault that.

I am merely pointing out, having also been through many Julys in Florida, that you run a greater risk of experiencing the same in July...on average. That month gets nearly 2 inces more of average rain per day, and is the hottest month of the year for average temps in FL, and as I mentioned, carries the among the highest of the summer break crowd volumes as a lot of school systems go back to school in early to mid August.

I haven't done WDW in July in a very long time, so maybe all of that (outside the weather) has changed. But...I wouldn't base an August trip off of last years weather...that was just goofy (a LOT of storms with very hot days, I agree...in fact, one day I referred to WDW as Arrakis in my trip report...but, not average)

So ... Is it really bad crowd-wise in August?

I'm seeing mixed crowd calendars.

Thanks.

We went last year Aug 15-21 and the parks were pretty busy. Plus you have the extreme heat of August. I would recommend to plan ahead by choosing recommended parks and arriving at opening. Dinner reservations are a must also. The good thing that does arrive is the rain to cool you off for 14 seconds before your sweating again, but at least most of the rides are indoor air conditioning. I have learned lower crowds+ cooler temps= Disney fun!

It's kinda crowded, but it depends on what you're comparing it to. If you're comparing the crowds to say like January or off-season times, then yes, it's very crowded. However if you're comparing the crowds to Christmas, it's nowhere near as crowded.

If there was a chart from 1-10. 1 being the least crowded and 10 being the most crowded. I'd put August around 6.5. What happens is the northern schools don't start till September, so there are still a lot of tourists in the area. yet since Florida schools go back mid-august, the crowd levels somewhat dissipate from the earlier summer times like June and July.

I guess I am just about the only one who likes the August heat. I've made 17 trips to Disney in my life and 13 of them were in August, 1 in June (just got back last night!!!) 2 in July, 1 in May. My next trip is August 10-17. I love going to Disney in August!

I live in Ohio and I hate the weather here 99% of the time.

Just have to remember to drink lots of water!
