The Walt Disney World College Program (WDWCP) has been around since 1981, and since then thousands of college students have participated. I did back in the spring of 2000 (Millenium Celebration, great time to be there) and worked as a lifeguard at Blizzard Beach.
Roles range from quick service food and beverage to attractions, and just about everything in between. Students live at company-sponsored apartment complexes just off WDW property. Rent is deducted weekly from your paycheck, but at least it is a paid internship.
I had an incredible experience during my time there. If you want to read more about my experience as well as get more information check out my site:

I also did the College Program (WDWCP), back in 1997. (Note my screen name....)
Anyway, what you get out of it totally depends on your attitude going into the program. I had an absolute blast and count it as some of the best times of my life. I know other people that hated it!
For the most part, of my friends that all hated it, they have one major thing in common. Most of them approached it as a summer job. This is in no way a summer job! You'll be lucky to break even with the money you earn vs. the money you spend. As was mentioned above, rent is automatically deducted from your paycheck and it isn't cheap. You are requred to stay in the WDWCP apartments too (no living off site with friends or relatives, etc...)
Basically, I approached it as a summer internship that happened to pay me just about enough to cover my costs for the summer. Not many people are able to use their time there to save money for the upcoming school year, so make sure your finances are in order!
Keep an open mind and don't get bogged down with whatever job you're assigned to. I worked in the parking lot at Disney-MGM Studios and I could have had a poor attitude about it. I know there's nothing that exciting about working in a parking lot. I choose to think of it as follows:
1) I'm one of the first people a guest will see when they get there in the morning and I have an opportuinity to really set their day off to a great start.
2) I'm one of the last people to see the guest when they leave the park at the end of a long day. I can make a difference by being that final impression when they leave. That means I can save a rotton day by being nice, or I can ruin a great day for them by being rude..
3) I didn't work directly in the park, so I never got bored with the place and never lost as much "Magic" because I wasn't literally in the park all the time!
I had a really great time and can answer tons of questions about the College Program. But realize that since I did it in 1997, there likely have been changes to the program and someone who did it more recently may have more up to date information.
