Could the whole Walt Disney World Resort be connected by waterways and boats? To be discussed in this thread......

Yes and No. There are many issues standing in the way such as the current layout of Wildlife Preserves and the existence of roads in the way. They would have to find a way to build a bridge at these locations. As for the Widlife preserves Disney would have to go through the long expensive process of getting the land evaluated for this type of change which the Government might say no too.

I would love to see it done though.

ouch… who hit that boat? Anyway, I gotta tell you one of the best things about staying on Universal property was the use of the water transportation straight to City Walk. I think it is one of the biggest perks. I am just going to say that WDW is way to big to have this type of transportation… imagine boating from AKL to MK!

The only problem is when this happens:

From what I've heard, all the waterways are connected in some way or another. Disney has a balancing system to equalize water levels across the property. However, these are connected by non-navigable means, such as pumps, pipes, and other systems.

However, as Voxel mentions, due to the current layout, it'd be hard to connect them currently, and transportation itself might be longer than even bus times...

I wonder how much it would end up being on average per mile, and if it would just make more sense to expand the monorails if they were looking for more methods of transportation

Could it? Possibly.

Is it currently? No.

The big problems with boats are they are typically slow and can be subject to stoppages due to inclement weather.

Exactly why I posted my picture, itll get you there fast!

I agree, all I was saying was that if they were already looking for more methods to transport guests(which I know they aren't really currently) how much it would be for a water way which would have to be 2 lanes and pretty deep per mile, and if it would make more sense to throw in a couple more million for a monorail.

It would be possible, but it would involve a good amount of logistics and construction. Also guests would need to know that any trips are going to take away, this isn't going to be a trip across 7 seas from poly to mk.

Would disney do this though, maybe. If they charged extra for it they could. If they wanted to find ways to spread more guest transportation needs to other means. It could also be tied to other transportation methods being used in the resort like PRT.

An interconnected waterway system would be a nice, alternative means of getting around for those that wanted to use it. It would take forever to get from one place to another. I could easily imagine an hour to get from the Boardwalk to the Magic Kingdom.

Looking at some aerial shots of WDW, you do see that there are some existing waterways that could be utilized for this. Just using these I could see a configuration that creates a continuous route from Coronado Springs to DHS over to Epcot, and then tying into a route from Bay Lake to Port Orleans and onto Downtown Disney. Along the way, you could pick up Art of Animation/Pop Century and Caribbean Beach.

It does look like there would need to be rebuilding of overpasses and some water control structures. You may even need to dredge and expand those existing channels. The problem I see with this is that a portion runs by highways and so it would not be terribly scenic.

I suspect it's economically unfeasible given traditional cost/benefit analysis. But from a "could they do it", it's fund to think about!

boats are nice, but work best for shorter distances.. it would take hours and hours to cross the vast property by boat.

it would most definitely be longer,

rather than expanding the monorails, the best idea would be a personal rapid transit system, using a variety of different capacity vehicles, this would enable the passengers to select their destination and then the system would chose and individual best route to get from point a to be without stopping at other stations in between
