"There has never been a time when so much of American entertainment has been controlled by so few. Disney and Universal have pocketed nearly 90 percent of the U.S. box-office receipts of the year’s top 10 films, a two-studio dominance never before seen in the movie industry. They also own the world’s 12 most visited theme parks and control the most lucrative franchises, including Marvel and “Jurassic Park,” in toys, games and beyond...."

(The phrase in the thread title about dominating U.S. culture is from the article's subtitle in the print edition.)

I skimmed it. However, it should be noted that not ALL of the iconic pop culture is owned by those two. Time-Warner has quite a large stable of classic IPs, such as Looney Tunes and the DC superheroes. Fortunately for Disney and UNI, they seem to not have any cohesive, logical plan as to how to utilize said characters effectively. DC's tv line-up seems to be doing well, but the films have been a mixed-bag at best.

Looney Tunes...talk about letting an IP die. For the life of me, I can't figure out what went wrong. I doubt most kids know who those characters are. If they do, they know a name and nothing more about them. I know they are used in Six Flags but it just seems like Bugs, Daffy, and co. have completely faded from public view. Really quite sad...
