Walt Disney's Vanishing Prairie

I want to take this oppourtunity to share a little bit of "magic" that I experienced recently with some people I know will understand me, as my boss did not  If anyone has an additional information or insight for me, I'd appreciate it!

I have a work study job at my college's library. Every now and again, we recieve donations. Oftentimes these donations are boxes upon boxes of crap books that they gave to us rather than throwing out. The majority of the time, there is nothing we can use. But every now and again, we find something exceptional...

I found something exceptional the other day. While partaking in the tedious task of going through these boxes upon boxes of books, something caught my eye...

Walt Disney's Vanishing Prairie. Published in 1955.

Being in my 20's, I wasn't around while Walt Disney was still alive. Or while any of the nature documentaries that I know little about were created.

As a Disney fanatic, however, this caught my eye! I got a big grin on my face. My boss gave me a puzzled look...kind of that "yeah, ok, that's neat but why are you so excited?" sort of look.

I then began my negotiations. I had to have this really cool piece of Disney history.

"Wilma...you don't really think the library will WANT this book....right? I mean it's informative but very outdated...it's really of no value to us as an academic library, right?"

I get the look again "Yes Nik, you can have the book if you'd like."

I don't know why, I just thought it was really cool and I knew others on here would surely understand my feeling and great appreciation for it!

Other thoughts came to my mind. Why doesn't Disney do things like this anymore? Where is Walt's magic? With this, my happy moment turned into a melancholy one.

The photos in the book are beautiful. The message comes across so clearly...

Where is this sort of magic today? :veryconfu

Woody, you know what she means! She means, where is this sort of detail and wonder about nature, animals, the world in the video and books that the Walt Disney Company produces and pushes today. (And, no, a commercial for Animal Kingdom does not count.)

The thing is, especially with Animal Kingdom existing, it would be perfect "synergy" (to use Michael Eisner's favorite B-school word) to do more programs and books like that and involving themes and animals at the Animal Kingdom.

The educational and "discovery" oriented themes of EPCOT and DAK should have their place in the entertainment produced by the company, even if shown on The Discovery Channel... (or books marketed to schools and science pages). They don't have to be huge audiences to make money, and unltimately to broaden the appeal of Disney in general (even more visitors, maybe?)

Thank you prberk for understanding the message better than he did, obviously.

Sure, Disney can throw together a Lizzie McGuire book or whatever books are sold at the links he provided.

But those books aren't published with the same detail and for the same reason!

Argh, I'm not even going to bother wasting my breath this time...
