Walt Disney World officials advise Orange County School Board
Date: 05/03/2002

In response to a request from the Orange County Public School system, the Walt Disney World Resort has provided the time and expertise of a team of senior Engineering Services managers to recommend a comprehensive, systematic approach to school facilities maintenance.
The benefits already have surfaced in the Disney team's first recommendations, saving the school system money, time and redundant labor.

"Having a good school system is a priority for parents and anyone who cares about the future of our community," said Al Weiss, president of the Walt Disney World Resort. "At Disney, we have a unique opportunity to help the school district build a program to provide the best learning environments for our children and save money at the same time. Working in concert with the school system, I believe we can truly make a difference."

During the last several months, a team of four Disney experts worked with Orange County Public Schools staff members, including maintenance and operations personnel, design and construction personnel, teachers, principals and others. This Facilities Strategy Team reviewed current practices and made recommendations for an ongoing system of thorough, timely and regular maintenance of school buildings. The team's purpose was to develop a facilities maintenance system that will maximize the useful life of both existing and planned school buildings.

The Walt Disney World Resort supports a variety of educational initiatives, including membership on the Construction Oversight and Value Engineering Committee, a group of community-based experts that has worked with the district since 1997 to ensure the construction of new, high-quality schools in a cost-effective manner.

Orange County Public Schools is the 14th largest school system in the nation, serving more than 157,000 students in 161 schools. The average Orange County school building is 30.2 years old, and about one-third of school buildings in the district are more than 40 years old. By the year 2011, it's expected that more than 210,000 students will be attending Orange County schools.

If Orange County reciprocates maybe Celebration's schools won't suck. Well their debate team will still suck (as long as my friend Tim is coaching them)
