Lots of good information; I am excited about many of the special editions and Walt Disney Treaures.

Does it seem to be that Disney is REALLY overdoing themselves?

Something of interest: DVD called Mr. Toad's Wild Ride?????

But look at all this stuff. Kim Possible, BOY MEETS WORLD, Lizzie McGuire..Angels in the Endzone...Angels in the Infield...Both Aladdin sequels...hundreds of items from the vaults...Teacher's Pet out in JUNE?..."Mickey's Three Musketeers"...Princess Diaries rerelease..Lion King 1/2 AND Lion King II in AUGUST?? And all the special editions of Poppins/Wonderland? Mickey's Twice Upon a Christmas?! ONCE WAS ENOUGH! MULAN II???

I am starting to get sick of this. And pretty soon, the public will be, too. Disney looks like it's throwing up everything it had down in the stomach, regurgitating and thriving on things from the past (either cheap sequels or material from the vaults to sell instead of modestly show on television), in order to get the quick, per-quarterly dollar.

If this trend continues, I can't see Disney staying around for a very long time.

There is such a thing as going overboard. :lookaroun

Anyway... Sounds like another great bunch of treasures. I wonder if they plan to release them in May of next year or this November?

Mickey Mouse Club sounds especially interesting since I have never seen the originals (only a few Annette segments).

Assorted Treasures should be a real good collection of some of Disney's finest.

Did they really miss that many B&W Mickey cartoons?

Yeah...I love the classic B&W's. So much hard work put into it...so innocent...so Walt...anyways...

I may not even buy the treasures. What, 8 of them coming at 20 dollars a piece? If Roy were in charge and brought in the Disney Classics channel, I could save $160. Gosh...but such good material.

ahhh Ben and Me, my favorite film from elementary school. I have the video and my mom just showed it to her fifth graders. She said she couldn't believe how in this day and age a bunch of mice could captivate fifth graders the way they did.
::sigh::
if only a modern day Disney film could do that....

The DVD has ruined the great Disney film library. Disney has always considered their animated product to be in a category of its own; in some ways they are absolutely right. Before 1970 I don't think I ever saw a Disney Technicolor print that visually didn't put most other movies to shame. Disney animation definitely was in its own category when you consider that the studio reissued the movies theatrically forever in seven-year cycles. Pinocchio, Bambi and Dumbo were reissued in the 1980's - how many 1940's films do you see bringing in millions in bookings today? Of course they're special.

Disney's was the last major movie studio to put their key titles into DVD format. They fought the DVD at every turn, but they lost the battle. Their animation titles in video on VHS and Laserdisc were released in limited time windows instead of staying available indefinitely, making them all the more collectable and 'special.' Major rental stores often didn't keep the Disney animation titles for rent because they'd be stolen! Now that's a good definition of special.

Disney knows that DVD quality is so good that once they release a title, the potential of piracy is so great, safeguards or no, that the title goes into the 'practical public domain' of being out of Disney control. Disney maximizes their revenue as ravenously as does any studio.

Sure, Disney has flooded the market with DVD's and I too have read the articles that complain that this "over release" of Disney DVD product "cheapens" the value of and respect for these titles. Well, that may indeed be true. However, may I add that they sell like hotcakes! That's why Disney retails their DVD's at Wal-Mart, Target, Kmart, Sam's, Best Buy, etc and they get top dollar for their DVD titles. As for the classics, they still play the same old game and do it very successfully! All of the Disney Treasures releases are limited editions. I own about 5 or 6 different versions of "Alice in Wonderland" in various formats. But next week on January 27th, I'm going to buy the new 2 disc DVD version. And the next one, and the next one, and the next one.......

Disney did not want any of this to happen. They have no choice but to keep up with the current technology, or die. It's all you evil PC users that have driven Disney to this point!

Well, I for one am pretty dang happy with what's happening. I love the DVD format, and never in my dreams could I have imagined that one day I'd have something like the first 3 seasons of Friends on my shelf occupying so little space.

I'll be there for some of those new Treasures, as I'll be there for Boy Meets World and Ducktales The Movie (it's coming out down here in May) and the new Recess releases and whatever else appeals to me. You guys are lucky, you'll be getting Lilo & Stitch and Mary Poppins Special Editions, we still have to deal with a Tron single disc with not even a trailer included... :fork:

Lilo and Stitch 2 in 2005? Mulan 2 this year? This is RIDICULOUS! Why do we need the cheap made direct-to-video sequels? If they want to make a sequel, make it good and put it in theatres. Making DTV sequels even with the classics (Cinderella, Little Mermaid) is a stupid idea, even though it may make some money.

Man, May 4th has a TON of DVD's coming out. Check out this list-

-The Big Green (I use to like that movie, but why in the world would they release a movie from 9 years ago that wasn't that good on DVD now? Who's going to be rushing out to the store to pick up a copy of this?)

-Herbie Rides Again

-Herbie Rides to Monte Carlo

-Herbie Goes Bannanas

-Miracle in Lane 2 (that was a Disney Channel movie from 2 years ago!)

-The Strongest Man in the World

-Now You See Him, Now You Don't

-The Great Locamotive Chase

.........ALL on May 4th.

I'm still waiting for my Pinnochio masterpiece edition to come out.:D

That is sad to me.

It is a great show, and should still be on the Disney Channel. It still has a lot for kids; and most of it stands up well.

But most important, it is a landmark and needs to be seen. I am 38, and I grew up seeing it in reruns twenty years after it began, and I can still remember how much I liked it... and how much I thought it was cool to watch kids from another generation....

It wasn't perfect, but it was a good show.

I've got mixed feelings about the DVD releases. I love that they take up so little space and will last forever. The bad thing is that I already have EVERYTHING Disney ever put out on video. And I mean everything. The only thing I don't have is Victory Through Air Power and that will be solved in a few months when the Treasures come out. I even have all the Texas John Slaughter's, Saga of Andy Burnett, all the Wonderful World of Disney's, every Mickey Mouse Club episode from the 50's and 80's etc etc... When I think of all the years of collecting I spent and money.. that now I have to do it all again to get it on DVD.....

Well, now think about all the people, like me, who haven't had the chance to have all that on DVD because 1) they weren't available in their countries or 2) they didn't know about it back then.
To me it's a wonderful opportunity to be able to own all the classic Disney shorts. They used to be on TV every Sunday morning in the 80s. Not anymore. Now I can watch them whenever I want.

You know what, Griz? You may be right.

The MMC should be on SOMEWHERE at 4:30 in the afternoon. And if they don't do it on The Disney Channel, there would be no reason why they couldn't put it on ABC Family or even sell rights to if for Hallmark Channel or TBS or syndication.

But I personally would like to see a rotation of the older MMCs at around 4 p.m., followed by a live, new daily episode from Disney-MGM Studios. Always made sense to me. Tie the generations together, while capitalizing on a built-in audience at WDW. Not to mention a perfect platform for "syrnergy" by having "guests" occasionally from other Disney projects.... (just not exclusively Disney-related guests)

Anyhooo......
