Does it seem to be that Disney is REALLY overdoing themselves? If this trend continues, I can't see Disney staying around for a very long time.
The DVD has ruined the great Disney film library. Disney has always considered their animated product to be in a category of its own; in some ways they are absolutely right. Before 1970 I don't think I ever saw a Disney Technicolor print that visually didn't put most other movies to shame. Disney animation definitely was in its own category when you consider that the studio reissued the movies theatrically forever in seven-year cycles. Pinocchio, Bambi and Dumbo were reissued in the 1980's - how many 1940's films do you see bringing in millions in bookings today? Of course they're special.
Disney's was the last major movie studio to put their key titles into DVD format. They fought the DVD at every turn, but they lost the battle. Their animation titles in video on VHS and Laserdisc were released in limited time windows instead of staying available indefinitely, making them all the more collectable and 'special.' Major rental stores often didn't keep the Disney animation titles for rent because they'd be stolen! Now that's a good definition of special.
Disney knows that DVD quality is so good that once they release a title, the potential of piracy is so great, safeguards or no, that the title goes into the 'practical public domain' of being out of Disney control. Disney maximizes their revenue as ravenously as does any studio.
Sure, Disney has flooded the market with DVD's and I too have read the articles that complain that this "over release" of Disney DVD product "cheapens" the value of and respect for these titles. Well, that may indeed be true. However, may I add that they sell like hotcakes! That's why Disney retails their DVD's at Wal-Mart, Target, Kmart, Sam's, Best Buy, etc and they get top dollar for their DVD titles. As for the classics, they still play the same old game and do it very successfully! All of the Disney Treasures releases are limited editions. I own about 5 or 6 different versions of "Alice in Wonderland" in various formats. But next week on January 27th, I'm going to buy the new 2 disc DVD version. And the next one, and the next one, and the next one.......
Disney did not want any of this to happen. They have no choice but to keep up with the current technology, or die. It's all you evil PC users that have driven Disney to this point!
