Welll..most people here will agree that the EASIEST way is to get a hold of a Dazzle*...they seem to do quite nicely for video to PC tranfers...of course..they arent THAT cheap..200 bucks or so.

It can be done reasonably easily but you might have an issue with final picture quality. You get much better results going directly from a digital source such as a digital camera if possible. It depends what kind of videos you mean, if they are your own holiday videos then you dont have much choice. If you want to transfer a lot of material to your PC in the future you really should consider investing in a digital camera.
Good luck

I've heard good things about external analog to digital converter boxes such as this one:

The high selling point is that they make perfect captures (no dropped frames) and make video input easy. you don't have to optimize your computer to get a good capture with these. They depend very little on your computer to digitize your videos.

I have been thinking about one of the Canopus ADVC 100's too! Good review here http://www.simplydv.co.uk/advc100.html

I am currently running a Matrox Marvel for Analogue RGB capture, and Firewire for MiniDV camera captures.
The Canopus DV Bridge is interesting because it uses the Firewire port, and appears to the PC or MAC as being a DV camera. So you can use the DV Video Capture programs, and then your favorite AVI editing application for editing and final render out to MPG or WMV etc.

Let me know if you get one and what you think of it! :)

wdwmagic a guy where I work has one on his workstation. He showed me a capture he did on it and it did a fine job. I don't know much about it, other than it was absolute cake to setup and make captures with. Maybe one day I can sneak a play at it. :)

For me, I usually do it the cheap, but usually effective way.

I purchased a cheap $40 video card called WinTV GO. Then hooked it up to my VCR and used a free program called VirtualDub to capture and encode the video file to a smaller format. The only bad things about this method that it has a steep learning curve, you need a fairly speedy PC (not like top of the line at least 600 mhz), lots of RAM, LOTS of Hard Disk Space (I'm talking Gigabytes if you want very good quality), and a LOT of patience. It took me awhile to get the hang of things, but I am turning out decent stuff.

Oh yeah, you might want to have a good Hi-Fi VCR for the bestest quality possible.

Hey Quentin!... I remember you from the forums at the WDWInfo site that I used to visit over a year ago before coming here. Still into Minnie Mouse? Good to see you! :)

Right now I am capturing with a Pinnacle DC10+ card (got it for $25 on clearance at Sears). After tweaking the heck out of the Win98 partition on my computer, I am not dropping a single frame at 640X480 capture at 29.97 framerate. These analog captures look fantastic! This card is tricky to work with because Pinnacle has been bad about making newer compatible drivers. Suppossebly there are Win2K drivers, but I could never get them to work. I found a program called AVI_IO and it did wonders for my card. The capture software that came with my card drops frames left and right.. this AVI_IO software does the job awesomely. It takes into account file system file size limits and will keep on capturing into new 2gig files for as much harddrive space as you have without dropping frames. I like it! Combine this with VirtualDub and some free filters.. you have the perfect analog capture/video editing system. It did take a great deal of work to get my system perfected to capture, but analog captures from my VCR couldn't be better!

Check out VCD Help for the skinny on capture cards.
