very curious---what is this!?

You can buy points from a DVC member so you can stay at one of their resorts. There are certain things you should be aware of, and those in the DVC forums can give you more details.

I'm also a DVC member.

We've done this a couple times, in the past we used the Timeshare Store and they were professional and everything played out as advertised. We spent a week at Kidani Village (AKL) and rented the required points at $12.00 a point, it probably ran around 400 points but I cant remember. They were able to secure the DME and Dining Plan as well. Once the Timeshare store secures your reservation you have to pay the TOTAL amount up front, same with the dining package. You can save a good amount of money if you choose your trip dates wisely and have the money to pay in one payment. Sadly I was informed a couple weeks ago that the Timeshare store will no longer provide access to the dining plan through their owners, I guess it became a hassle but they lost a customer in me as we prefer it. Daves Vacation club is also reputable and had they had points for my trip next week I would have utilized them.

Be careful about your word choice. Buying points would mean that you are actually taking over the deed on DVC points from the current owner. Renting points is what you are looking to do. As pointed out, check out the DVC sub forum for more info, but what it comes down to, the owner is making a reservation in your name. You pay them for doing so, and hope everyone comes out ok.
