Vero Beach Resort for a change of pace.

Hi all! I've been away from the board for quite some time now. Not that I expect anyone to have noticed. ;)

Heading down to the Vero Beach Resort in 34 days. I'll have the always lovely Greebette and my sons Greeboy1 and Greeboy2 (9 and 1 respectively). While we expect to spend the vast majority of our 7 days pool or beach side, is there anything outside of the resort that is a can't miss attraction?
During our stay it will be Boy2's second birthday (character breakfast for that) and our 12th wedding anniversary (suggestions for a nice dinner sans kids?). Just looking for backup plans in case it rains.... as I'm sure it will part of the time.

I promise to not be away for so long again.... really!

I appreciate the sympathy to my forlorn thread.:)

Guess I'll just have to wing it and and report on what I find.
Though a trip report with pics of nothing but my toes in the sand and a beer in my hand may become boring.

We stayed @ Vero back in 2003. I will say that the resort is much smaller than I expected. However, the room was great (we had a 2 bed room) and beach access was fine. The grounds were well maintained and the CMs provide many activities for the kids.

However, back in 2003, there was not much to do in close proximity to the resort. 20-30 drive to get to anything of note. Not sure if this has changed over the past 10 years. Also, many of the recent posts on tripadvisor are less than stellar, but I rarely listen to that noise.

I have been to Vero beach but not the Disney resort there. I only spent one night but I did really enjoy the actual beach. There really isn't that much to do surrounding the area. My in laws live about 45 min from Vero so I am becoming a little familiar with the area. I am sure that anything Disney is going to be beautiful and kid oriented but I just can't imagine staying a week there. I would like to do a split stay and enjoy the beach a few nights then head over to WDW. That way I could prepare my body for the insanity it was about to experience!
