I just read an article on www.orlandosentinel.com that Disney's Vero Beach resort is closed until at least the end of September. Here's the article.

Disney shutters its Vero Beach Resort for repairs

By Sean Mussenden | Sentinel Staff Writer

Disney's Vero Beach Resort sustained damage during Hurricane Frances and could remain closed through the end of September or longer, the company said Wednesday.

"Has it been decimated? Has the roof been ripped off? No. But there are things we're evaluating right now," said Mariska Elia, spokeswoman for Disney Vacation Club, which operates the resort.

Elia would not discuss the extent of the damage, citing an ongoing survey that she said began Monday and was expected to take the rest of the week to complete.

But, she said, "Everything is structurally intact."

The time-share resort features a large main building that overlooks the beach, with less than a football field's worth of vegetated dunes and sand separating it from the open sea where Frances came ashore. Smaller villas also dot the property near the water.

The speed of the winds that battered the resort during the weekend is unclear. Three miles inland, the National Weather Service reported sustained winds of 56 mph and gusts of 82 mph. The beachside winds were most likely higher, forecasters said.

Disney canceled reservations through Sept. 30, and is rebooking guests at other resorts or rescheduling visits. Elia said it was possible the resort could reopen before or after that date.

In the meantime, the 250 hourly cast members are temporarily out of work. Their last paid day on the job was last Thursday, when the company evacuated everyone in advance of the oncoming storm.

Disney asked them to come to the resort today to pick up their paychecks. Elia said the company was working to give the displaced workers temporary relief assistance.

The worst part about this story is the CM who are out of work. First a horrible storm that may have damaged their property and now to lose their jobs for a while...it's sad.

*I tried to see if this article was posted anywhere. I didn't see it, but if it's a double post, feel free to take off the boards...I don't know how to do that!*

Sounds like another cost cutting scam to me.
Uh, not sure how to respond to that one.

Really hate to see those CMs out of work. I hope they can be relocated to other positions until they can return to VB.

Well I just can't see why if there is no structural damage as they claim, they would need to close the resort for an entire month.
Broken windows, water damage to floor and carpenting, damaged landscaping, severe beach erosion, etc.. None of these would be considered "structural damage."

Theories...

1. Pools full of beach sand (saw pictures of this... entire pools full of sand)
2. dunes have been wiped out
3. major amounts of trees and bushes are down
4. awnings / screen rooms / windows torn up
5. windows blown out and major water damage to interiors

etc, etc, etc.

Any or all of the above could have happened and not caused "structural" damage, but could take days or weeks to fix up enough for guests to be able to return.

When we went to the Vero Beach Resort a few years ago, there wasn't much in the way of a dune due to hurricane damage. I can imagine that Frances may have done in most of what little they had.

Little or no dunes could cause even more flood damage. Anyone have any pictures? Before / After?

Let me assure you that this is not a cost-cutting scam, folks. As a Disney Vacation Club member, I just stayed at Disney's Vero Beach resort in Summer 2003. Again, let me assure you that the amount of land between the Inn building and the ocean is minimal. Remember, Frances made landfall nearly head-on at the resort, so the beach is most likely totally gone.

Someone had mentioned flooding as a big issue. Very likely as well. Rooms on the ground floor are probably ruined and the recreation department is probably shot considering the 100 Acre Wood area located across the street has a small lake that could easily flood as well.

Without a beach or any other kind of recreation offerings, it makes absolutely no sense to endanger guests by placing them in a resort hit point-blank by a Cat 2 hurricane. Also, with the chance of Ivan hitting nearly the same general vicinity, it's not worth it.

And think about this, DVC is the biggest, most popular aspect of Disney Vacation Developments and makes the most money, so it makes absolutely no sense to close an immensely popualr resort just to save a buck, because they'd actually be losing quite a few.

If there was flooding the restaurants are on the first floor as well and if I remember correctly the parking is underground.

There wasn't much of a beach to start with (very narrow) so I imagine a lot of it was washed away. They may need to build it back up again. Also the resort itself is built on a barrier island, so it was more exposed to the elelments then many places. We had a room facing the water, and it was really windy up there when there was just 10 to 15 mile per hour winds. I can't imagine it in a hurricane.

I heard that a very nice restrant north of there called Captian Harims (spelled wrong) was ruined. It is really too bad, it was a great place, wonderful food and this fun sand bar on the beach. We ate there May 2004. It had a maririna near it and I heard all the boats ran into it. So sad. I hope they rebuild.

Vero Beach Resort is a lovely place. I hope they and all of Florida are able to recover quckily from this tragity. If you haven't visited the resort yet, try it some time. It is a great place.

I read on mouseplanet.com this morning that Disney's Vero Beach Resort reopens today, Monday, September 20th. Limited repair work continues in specific areas, including Sonya's restaurant and the children's wet deck, which are currently closed.

That's great news for all of the employees! They can finally get back to work!
