HOLLYWOOD (Variety) -- Oscar-winning feature scribe Christopher McQuarrie ("The Usual Suspects") is jumping back into television, developing a new detective drama for ABC.

The project, targeted for fall 2003, revolves around a husband and wife who solve crimes together. McQuarrie and his wife, Heather, will serve as executive producers.

ABC has made a production commitment to the concept, with a significant penalty attached if it decides not to shoot a pilot. McQuarrie last worked with ABC two years ago on the drama pilot "Nocturne."

"Chris is one of the great young voices working in TV and movies right now," said Steve McPherson, president of Touchstone Television, ABC's production arm. "We were disappointed that the last project didn't go forward, so it's great to get another opportunity to be back working with him and Heather."

McQuarrie also continues to be active on the film side. In addition to developing his script for "Alexander the Great" at Intermedia Films, he is rewriting "Men of Destiny," a Disney film to be directed by John Woo.
