Mobiles in the US a bit different than in almost Eurpoe

You'll need to shop for one on ebay or stop in an AT&T or T-Mobile store to get an active SIM. You need to ensure your phone is a tri or quad band as the primary base frequencies used in Europe for GSM are 900/1800 MHZ and the US uses 850/1900. You can also check out orate.co.uk before you go for a sim there as well.

Note we have a few other carriers who use their own standards such as Sprint (iDEN, WiMax and CDMA2000), and Verizon (CDMA200, EV-DO) which would require you to buy or rent another handset(s)

You might consider buying a prepaid phone at Walmart (our Tesco but larger )

Disclaimer *Note that I am an employee of T-Mobile USA , so I do have a personal bias.

I was aking similar questions a few weeks ago. I also asked at an UK Expats in the US website and they advised that the types of Data deals we get in the UK are just unheard off in the US.

I'm on 3 and I get 100minutes/3000txt/2Gb data for £10.00. I was told that there is nothing remotely close to that in the US.

If it's data you're interested in, then there was a thread somewhere that mentioned that some public Wifi zones have been opening in EPCOT, with rumouor that Public WiFi in WDW was the next big thing.

If any of that helps?

European telco costs VS US

That would be a function of scale. England by itsself is the size of the US State of Alabama, and the whole UK... the state of Oregon. Population desity is also a factor, UK having an average density of 255 people per square kilometer (660 per square mile) and the US only 32 per km2 or 83 mi2 . The shorter the distance from the tower to the switching center , the less resources it takes to install and maintain it.

I can tell you since I was at WDW just last week that data rates are good (~1-3 MB down everywhere except in the large ridge buildings) and coverage is everywhere. A large improvement from 2005 where you had it at the front gates of the parks and thats about it. Be sure to check out the WDW mobile site while you're in the parks...the wait times for each attraction are constantly updated :)

One Little Spark...
For the record, it is now against US federal law to "crack" your cel phone (as of last year)...

Just look into a MetroPCS phone or something.
