I am arriving at the poly at 7:30 am the day of my check in. I have requested the Tahiti longhouse, and I have paid for a garden view. There are 4 of us in the room along with a 3 yr old and a 15 month old. The question is this; What kind of upgrades can I ask for? I do not want to look like an idiot, but i dont want to cut myself short either. Tell me some success stories on upgrading if there are some out there.

This ticks me off. You have no right to an upgrade at all. You paid for a garden view, and all you can expect (read: all you deserve) is what you paid for: a garden view (or equivalent). Upgrades are SPECIAL things done for SPECIAL reasons at Disney's descretion. Not just cuz you ask, all of a sudden you are gonna get an upgrade. What makes you so special you get a better room without having to pay????? You get what you pay for, and shouldn't expect to get something for nothing. I hate when people book less than they want or need expecting to get a free handout at check in. And, checking in early shouldn't matter. Others have PAID for more, and the rooms with more will be given to them, cuz they PAID. You shouldn't ask for any upgrade.

i don't want anymore than i paid for. That is why i posted this as a question. I apoligize for offending a cast member. I now understand that upgrades should not be asked for. Thank you for explaining that to me in your polite and kind style. I have been reading posts on wdwmagic forums for a month now and i have been pleased in reading the comments. But now I jerk comes on here and insults me and basically calls me a beggar for asking a question! If this guy is a cast member at disney I see why i have read about some people being disgruntled on their trips. Not that anyone cares, but this is my second and last writing on wdwmagic. Im going to intercot or disneynation. I have never been talked to as a degenerate at either of those sites.

When I was a kid my family and I used to stay at the Polynesian almost every summer, right when we would check in my dad would ask if it was possible to get a free upgrade. I would say about 4 out of 8 times they gave it to us. In the summer of 2000 my girlfriend and I stayed at Coronado, right when we got in our room with two twin beds I called the front desk asking for a free uprade to a room with a king size bed. They gave it to me with no problems.

I would say definatley ask right when you check in, I am staying at the Poly this july, I requested Figi, and plan on asking for a free upgrade to a lagoon view room.

You have nothing to loose by asking, so I say go for it, it sure can pay off. :animwink:

Why do you care so much about other people getting deals? If someone saves a few bucks on an expensive room, good for them.

I agree you should ask...we stay concierge and pay for it...but I would be thrilled to know that Disney gives upgrades if possible...that's Disney! 26 years running our own very successful business...we always give as much as we can afford to. It pays off in the end. Disney's smart enough to know this.
Ask! Let us know if you have success.

Hey 2much2do...

Why does it burn you so bad that someone might want to upgrade their room? Did you have some horrible upgrade experience as a child that has scarred you? Have you ever thought that it may actually be in WDW's interest to get you that upgrade? Think about it...If they happen to give me an upgrade if they have one available, don't you think I'm going to tell every person I know what a great thing WDW did for me? And by golly I'm coming back again! It's all about taking care of the customer. Give them a little something extra once in a while, and you have created brand loyalty. Besides, the worst thing that happens is they say no.

My only other thought here is that I wanted to thank you for apparently running off someone for simply asking a legitimate question. I thought your response was completely uncalled for. What exactly is it that upsets you about this? Why shouldn't I try to get all I can for my vacation dollar? If you disagree, that's fine. There's just no reason to have a fit about it. You have apparently managed to drive away a member to other boards, and I'm sure he'll be quick to tell everyone there about the experience he had on this one. If something you read here gives you that much anger, take some time before you answer. I'll get off my soapbox now...

I do agree with some of 2much2do's reactions.

It makes me Laugh when I see people trying to get free upgrades. 1) I am a frequent flyer and have acclumated over 20,000 miles with Delta. When I get called up for an upgrade, its not because I asked for it, its because of my loyalty to the company. One day I had this woman with 4 kids come up to the gate with me and got into an argument that I was getting an upgrade and she was not. If you want a good laugh just hang out at an airport for a day. 2) When I go to Disney I PAY for my Suites, I PAY for the suites to have peace and quiet and to be at a private level with other people of my social class. I dont expect this family of 10 who got a free upgrade up there with me taking all the oderves, food, and snacks that they can get just because they got an upgrade.

Well that was my rant, sorry if I offended anyone

Hey s25843,

Your rant did not offend me. And if you really think it's that funny when people try to get free upgrades I can have my girlfriend record me asking for ours when we stay at the Poly this July. Then I can post it here for some good laughs. But I really don't see what is so funny about it. If we get the upgrade, great, if we don't, oh well. I don't expect it but I am sure gonna ask for it when I know for a fact that they offer them sometimes. WDW is not an airport and the Polynesian does not offer frequent visitor miles. If they did my family would practically own the Polynesian we have stayed there so many times when I was a kid. I am only 24 and most of my "social class" is staying at the value and moderate resorts because they can't afford the Polynesian. But if somehow they can get an insane upgrade to the Poly this July from the 20 - 29th, I will save them a lawn chair by the pool. :animwink:

s25843,

I'm with you on the aiport thing. It seems like so many people EXPECT something for nothing these days. My point, however, was that I see no reason why I shouldn't ask for a room upgrade. If it's available, why not take advantage of it? I get a nicer room, which makes me happy, and WDW gets a happy guest, which makes them happy. I am by no means advocating that someone is ENTITLED to an upgrade, just that it never hurts to ask for one.

The thing that I find bothersome about this whole thread is this undercurrent of "classes." 2much2do blew a gasket about this topic, and you're talking about how you want to stay on a floor where you won't be bothered by those pesky lower "social classes." Don't worry, we'll be over at the All Stars, so we'll be out of your way. Just like you I PAY my way to WDW, I just can't afford to stay at the delux resorts yet. But don't worry, I still aspire to be an elitest snob someday, so maybe I'll get there yet! We can get rooms on the same floor and make sure none of those little kids eat up our free snacks that we PAY to get! We'll call security and have them downgraded to a regular room with a bad view, just like they deserve!

It really saddens me a little to see this kind of tone on the boards (including mine), but I've just had enough of this crap. I thought we all came to this website to talk about something we all hold dear to us, Walt Disney World. I really don't post a lot; I mostly just read, but I just can't sit hear and watch a member get insulted and leave just for asking a question! If you don't like what someone says, please feel free to disagree! I just don't see why there's any need to be rude about it. And I REALLY hate this whole "social class" thing. It just smacks of arrogance. If you're rich, great; but please don't put down those of us that aren't.:)

I agree with everything you've said Tigger1968. Its a shame that It has come to a point that someone can't even ask a question, no matter how insignificant or how lame it might seem. If they want to take the time and find the websight and ask a question they should be able to do that. It kind of angers me that this person got pushed to another forum because someone has a chip on there shoulder. And I don't care if that person is a cast member or a junior member they are just plain wrong

People who ask for free upgrades when they aren't on their honeymoon or something, shouldn't get an upgrade. They could be taking it away from someone who has something to celebrate and might miss out bc of it.

Upgrades do happen but I do not think they should be asked for either. I even know many of the Polynesian staff and they are irritated at those who ask for free upgrades in view or to concierge level. I my self would never ask. I have been upgraded for free to concierge once but I found out it was because we paid full price for a lagoon view and they over booked through some discount travel site the lagoon view rooms. All that were left were the lagoon view rooms in the concierge so we were moved and the people with the discounts were put in the standard rooms.

I am on the side that says you should get what you pay for.

Let me just say that I also don't agree with asking for a upgrade when you didn't pay for it, I would never do it either. My problem was how 2much2do answered the question. She clearly over reacted and seemed to take it personally that someone would dare ask for an upgrade when they didn't pay for it. I'm just saying take a chill pill and cool down. The situation could of been handled a lot better.
