Universal jacks up ticket price a 3rd time
$5 increase means park raised price 15% in '04

Ticket prices at Universal Orlando will go up today for the third time this year -- by far the largest single-year increase in the theme park's history.

Before tax, a one-day, one-park adult ticket to either Universal Studios or Islands of Adventure will go up $5 to $59.75, a 9 percent increase over the old price.

The move comes two weeks after Walt Disney World unveiled its steepest increase in at least 15 years in the price of a single-day, single-park ticket. That increase -- part of a radical restructuring of the way Disney sells tickets -- takes effect Jan.2.

In an effort to encourage tourists to stay longer and spend more money at its parks and hotels, Disney's new plan builds in discounts for longer stays.

In the price changes that take effect today, Universal increased the price of every ticket it offers -- including multi-day passes -- except its most expensive annual pass. Two- and three-day multiple-park passes increased about 5 percent, while the cost of a five-day pass went up 25 percent.

Still, even with the increases, Universal's two, three and five-day tickets will be cheaper than similar tickets at Disney. The price of a one-park adult ticket at the two resorts will match.

All of Orlando's major theme parks historically raise prices at about the same time. At SeaWorld Orlando, where a one-day ticket costs $53.95, officials would not comment Friday on pricing strategy.

After years of slower growth, admission prices at Orlando's parks have spiked this year, as the region's tourism industry has rebounded from recession.

Universal's one-day ticket began the year at $51.95, before going up $2 in January, 80 cents in April, and $5 this month -- a 15 percent hike altogether.

Tom Schroder, a park spokesman, said the latest increase was aimed at "staying level with the marketplace" after Disney announced its price hike.

"We watch that very, very carefully," he said.

And, he said, the addition of the Universal Studios' Revenge of the Mummy indoor roller coaster -- which replaced an older attraction -- "added value" to the ticket price.

I'm kinda disappointed in Uni. I was really hoping they would keep the prices below $59 dollars to try and pull in some new business. But oh well...

Monkey see monkey do. My crystal ball says Sea World is next in the coming weeks.

But then again, it isn't any secret. All of the Orlando parks raise their prices around the same time.

This is what makes their Annual Pass such a good deal

They ran a promotion where you could have a 2 park pass for something like $100-150. That's < 3 days of use + free parking + in-park discounts + more

Tough call, eh?

We went in September with their Bonus pass which was a 5 day pass to City Walk and both Universal Parks for $99 - can't beat that! (Although I have to say 1 day is enough to cover everything in Universal - 5 days and your pulling out your hair while wishing you were in WDW!)

For the first time since 9/11 Disney raised their prices first. At least Disney has a ticket scale and price scale to justify it.

At least I have my $99 renewal for my Ap to UO, and I just renewed my AP to WDW. I hope that Fl residents can still buy the one day get a year at Sea World and Busch.

$60.00 for a day at a park is crazy!!!!!!

I don't want to start a remember when thread, but when I moved here, I was outraged with the $40.00 a day price.

Us locals with passes now have to say: that is $240.00 a day plus food and parking for a family of four. You are looking at probably $300.00 at least to take your family to a park in Orlando (if you eat soda and fries.)

I am waiting to see the lines at the DMV with people giving their families, friends, adresses.

Quite honestly, if they price even a penny less than WDW, they are leaving money on the table.

How many people that visit Universal make the decision to visit those parks simply due to price?

On top of that, are they really going to change their mind over a few $$?....probably not.

If someone is coming here for an extended stay (from out of state).....schedule is of more importance than price.....if they have an extra day, they will go to a park.

How many people are going to plan a 5 or 7 day trip, and do nothing (or just do something that they could have done at home)....they are spending THOUSANDS to go on vacation.....a few hundred more to visit a park is better than "wasting" the trip money doing nothing.

Yeah, you're right. I didn't look at it from that perspective. I was looking at it from more of a local perspective.

I'm just nervous that the parks may soon be alienating people because of pricing. $60? I don't know how much more I would be willing to pay for a one-day. $65? Maybe... $75? We might be pushing it.

But like I said, I'm looking at it from a one-day only perspective. I don't stay at the resorts, which would completely change the outlook.

Yes, it's getting steep, but as long as the attendance is increasing, so will the ticket prices.

The NFL owners raise their prices and in most markets, the people keep coming, and fill the stadiums.

I don't know what the "break point" will be (IE: what percentage of attendance drop for Disney/Uni/Seaworld,etc) to drop, or at least not raise, their ticket prices. 5%, 10% ?

Oh, I agree completely.

However, a 15% percent increase in a year is giant step no matter what the industry.

Another, unrelated, concern involves the standards the different parks are held to. I think Disney could get away with charging $75-$80 dollars (eventually) for a one day ticket; but could SeaWorld? Universal might not be able to charge more than $75 without pushing people away. Because of the different types, and appeals, of the Orlando parks, eventually a price descrepancy will HAVE to happen. And when that happens, will people be willing to go to the cheaper parks?

I think that in the Orlando market, the key is the price of the extended stay pass.

WDW is charging $60 for 1 day.....but if you buy 7 days it is only $25 or so per day....this is key.

The parks can turn on the local "faucet" in need times, like when WDW offers the "Play 4" pass which is 4 days for $99-$109.....so they can always get the local market "in times that it is needed".

I don't really think the parks care to have too many locals......they don't spend nearly as much money, and some are not the "greatest" of people......itis not the image that they want in the parks.
