Univeral's 1st quarter sees 44 % decline in profit
Apirl 23, 2010

Universal Orlando's first quarter profits have been announced and the resort saw a 44 percent decrease from this time last year. 2009 first quarter earnings were $34 million; 2010 has only brought in $19 million. Assumptions are that this is due to the heavy advertising the resort is doing to promote the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Officials are hoping to see an increase in attendance and profits with the opening of the new attraction on June 18.

lets see what disney did

Before anyone replies to this story with the usual, "Look how much trouble Universal is in!" hyperbole, I'd like to highlight the fact that while their overall profit is down, their revenue was flat compared to last year -- meaning they made the same amount of money and just spent more.

Attendance is down only because I feel a lot of people are holding off until HP opens. I feel Universal will do fine when this attaction is in full swing.

I agree that people are probably holding off until Potter. At least for Universal's sake I hope so.

Let's look at it this way...

due to the hype alone around Potter possibly being open Grad Bash was completely sold out the first two nights of the event already where as Grad Night over at Magic Kingdom....well wasn't.

Its not a definite but if that is a sign of the future to come than Universal is going to be just fine.

I have mixed feelings about USF becoming incredibly succesful, because as much as I want to see them do well, I don't want the parks to become ridculously busy .

I hear ya as a theme park fan that is the way we feel sometimes but look at it this way. Not only would the parks theoretically improve because of the success and healthy amounts of money going back into attractions, general park upkeep and special events but they could actually use dead space like the old Murder She Wrote Soundstage 44 building for an attraction and would likely put the effort into that sort of thing as well as no attractions losing major effects or going seasonal status.

Very true. It might only be a matter of time before we start a Universal 3rd Gate thread :lookaroun.

Not really room for any new large park actually. They are using land for the new resident complex and then some new hotels are on the drawing board.

But what could eventually happen is Universal could make an offer on Philips high school across the street if the schoolboard ever wanted to put it for sale which they do to big companies sometime when they plan on relocating. I would not count on it anytime soon though.

Two park focus is fine. There is a lot of space that used to be attractions they can use for the future.

Also side note, a bit of old filming studio magic is coming back to Universal Studios Florida. Nothing major but now along with TNA Impact Wrestling filming there guests will also be able to view a new Family Fued Hosted by Steve Harvey which starts taping in front of live studio audiences this fall. It is nothing like the old days, but a step in a good direction.

How well are the Universal resort hotels doing? I have brilliant things about them, but are they busy enough to warrant more?

Universal owns the land south of IOA. However, the east plot is currently slated for a fourth hotel. The remaining west plot wouldn't be large enough to accommodate a full-sized theme park on its own. Especially since it would require its own parking. Perhaps an on-site water park or even a "botique park" of some sort, but not a third gate. Either way, I don't see them using that land any time soon.

I agree. Except for on the parking part. You can always add levels to existing parking structures. the things were sturdy enough and constructed with that sort of thing likely in mind for future. The big thing is they would have to figure out transportation because the manmade lake can not go any further or it will be in service areas or roadways.

But regardless Universal has enough focus right now
