Can anyone confirm this?

I can find stuff online that says yes and things that say Disney is scared to release it because they think kids will think the original is lame...

I don't see the appeal of older films in Blu-ray... is it just me? yes, the resolution is better but not worth the 34.99 dollar price tag

Where are you buying blu-ray's at? Aside from boxed sets I do not think I have ever seen a blu-ray selling for $35 since they hit the street several years ago. $35 might be the MSRP but I have yet to see a retailer try to sell one at that price in quite some time.

Best Buy runs great specials when the disc first comes out but the prices jump to 29.99 - 34.99 once the initial release buzz is over. The cheap Blu-Rays (10 - 15) are just useless movies that have little appeal in blu-ray (ie American pie... very funny, but high def need not apply... The Patriot (very much so) and hence the 30 dollar price tag)

I would think that movie would take about 6 years to remaster to make it look worthy of Blu-Ray.
I just watched the regular DVD over the weekend and quite enjoyed it. Sure the visuals do not hold up against what we have today but I like the story. I'll be getting the blu-ray version as soon as it comes out.

I'm with Yoda on this one... All the blu-rays I see are around 24.99

Yeah dude, I don't know where you do your shopping, but I just picked up The Expendables on Blu-Ray for $19.99.

point example, The Expendables just came out... it won't be 19.99 in 6 months.

I have a massive account with Best Buy, am there at least once a week and have an extensive collection. I watch the blu-rays and many are 24.99 but many are also 30 to 35 depending on what you're getting.

Price aside...

I can see subtle differences when they release older movies that have been cleaned up and tagged as Blu Ray. I have a higher end TV and player though so some of that is more noticeable with what I have. A lot of time the redoing in Blu Ray stuff includes more extra features...

I hope Tron comes to Blue Ray. I would be interested in what extras they throw on there.

I don’t understand how older movies are sold as Blu Ray. I thought in order for a move to be viewed in HD it must first be recorded with a HD camera. So if the camera technology wasn’t available when the film was made, how can it be in HD? Is it more of a marketing ploy where the film gets cleaned/restored/enhanced for HD but will never be as good one filmed in HD?

yeah, I agree. I have a PS3 and I only buy the movies I REALLY want (so, all Pixar, even Disney Animated are excellent) but would I buy Slapshot, Caddyshack, or Predator on Blu-Ray? Nope... its not worth it, especially since I own SO many dvd's why upgrade just to have the fancy box?

edit:

on a side note, Best Buy had the TS box set on sale for 59.99 the day TS3 was released.

Film contains much more information than standard DVD can reproduce. The BluRay format has enough room to allow for a digital transfer that approaches the picture quality of the original film.

Many of the blu-ray transfers go through a process called re-mastering which improves the quality. How much depends on the type of remastering done. For something like Cadyshack it is doubtful that you will see a remastering go much past what normal upscaling can achieve. However, for more popular movies like Terminator 1 and 2 the remastering process they will get is much more extensive and will produce much better results.

Yeah - It'll probably be less.

I was just as Best Buy this past weekend. There are tons of movies under $15. I don't think I saw one movie over $29.99.

You're joking, right? You do realize it was black Friday shopping weekend so tons of specials were being run on blu ray movies for $5, $10 and $15. I hope you found some under $15! Those are once a year prices! I bought Batman Begins, Ice Age and Independence Day for $5 each this past weekend, all on blu ray. According to BesBuy.com today, at this very moment, those are selling for $14.99, $19.99 and $27.99, respectively. Go in there today and the average price for a blu ray is $15-$25.

DDbowdoin is 100% right on this price thing. For everyone that has never seen a blu ray over $29.99, especially a new release, I hope you don't plan on buying the new Fantasia on blu ray that came out today, because it's on sale this week at Best Buy for $29.99, and usually retails for $34.99. And if you haven't gotten your copy of TS3 on blu ray yet, it's currently selling for $34.99 at Best Buy!

you have to bite early on the release dates, with the Disney Manufacturer Coupon of $8 my blu-ray TS3 was 18 bucks. a week later it was 34.99... these things arent cheap

ps good call on the fantasia release! I didn't realize it just came out... its a 2 movie pack including Fantasia 2000
