Tripod - carry-on or checked?

Can I carry on my tripod for a flight, or must I check it with my luggage? I wasn't sure if it could be considered a potential "weapon" or not. It collapses down small enough to fit in my camera backpack, which I was planning on carrying on. Thanks for your help!

I don't think it will be a problem but check with your carrier. I think they change the rules just to give us grief!

I always thought the same thing... if anyone hijacked this plane my tripod is going straight in your face. But alas, they allow the tripod.

I would check it, although I have gotten a gorillapod through as a carryon before.

We all must be discussing vastly different sized tripods here.....

yeah, obviously some common sense comes into play. Here are the two tripods I own and use all the time, take a guess which one I check and which one I carry on. I suspect the average shooter here is also using the one I carry on, not many people casually have a 600 dollar tripod.

Yup. That and security would look at you funny LOL

I am pumped, there is a website here in MA called Free Cycle... essentially it's a group broken down into communities. I belong to a few groups that really only cover wealthy communities. It's a way for people to recycle items by giving things to people who will use items that are otherwise collecting dust. Rather than selling the stuff like normal people who need money, these rich people just give stuff away. I posted a message about ANYTHING photographic and got an email back... I just picked 72 rolls of 35mm Fuji Velvia 100. While I normally shoot 120 film I'll gladly take 720 dollars worth of free film... I am going to shoot so much at Disney.
