Trip Report: Guardians of the Galaxy and The Day the Disneyland Gods Shined Upon Us

So I finally went to DCA recently after almost 5 months. The time had come to the see the infamous GOTG:MB in person. I was expecting the trip to be the run of the mill day when my wife and I take our 1.5 year old. Take him on the carousel a couple times, Dumbo, IASW and maybe POTC or Jungle cruise if we re lucky. Eat a meal, buy a souvenir or two and go home. Lucky for me, it wasn't. The first bit of good news I received was that my sister and her fiancee were going to meet us at the park. Meaning not only would we have a baby sitter (wife and I aren't really into single rider) when we want to go on grown up rides but we could utilize the child switch which allows you to bring 2 guests for a second ride. Don't get me wrong, spending the day with my son having fun in Fantasyland is great but after a long week of suffering in cubicle nation, its nice to get on a couple rides that go faster than 2 mph.

We arrived at the park at the AP friendly time of 2pm. The main goal was to see Remember Dreams Come True with our son for the first time. We've seen it 1.5 times but have never really tried to get a good spot. I wanted to see it from one of the prime time spots in front of the castle. There was a nice little breeze so we decided to go get World of Color FP's just in case RDCT was cancelled. Of course, I wasn't thinking that WOC starts at 9pm and RDTC at 9:25pm. So a lot of good the FP's would have done . We walked over to the WOC Fast past kiosks, which are now by Mermaid btw and not Grizzly River Run. (Walked right by them all the way to GRR and a CM kindly directed me to walk all the way back). From the time we entered DCA I was doing one thing and one thing only. You guessed it! Analyzing GOTG:MB from every vantage point possible. This exercise made me realize how terrible I am with vantage points in my head. First off, I don't think the tower looks any better or worse than it does in the pictures. Aside from the view from the esplanade, Grizzly Peak Air field (facing Carthay), and to a lesser degree the Bug's Land entrance I did not find it too troubling. On second thought, the view when facing the Cozy Cone Motel from Cars Land wasn't great either. It's amazing how many trees there are along that main pathway through the park that seem like they were put there with the main purpose of blocking the old TOT from view. You cannot see GOTG:MB from anywhere on Buena Vista St, the hub, Hollywood Blvd, Grizzly Peak proper or most of Paradise Pier (not 100% sure on PP as I did not go to the Screamin /TSMM side of the pier) From most other areas of the park where the tower can be seen its too far for most guests to notice or care. Not sure how this will change with GOTG:MB's lighting package.

What surprised me most is that the view of the tower from the corner of Hollywood and Sunset Blvd. did not bother me as I thought it would. That area with the side of the Animation building and un-themed outdoor queue of the Hyperion was always one of the weaker themed areas of Hollywoodland. Visually, it's never been much to look at. As far as theme, it's still a shame that we lost the solid themeing of TOT with the Red Car trolley going by but the area btwn Sunset/ Hollywood and TOT was always weak. Still cant understand why they went with an eclectic alien oil refinery though. Wish they would of just finished Hollywoodland 2.0 and strengthened some of the weaker areas but alas. Anyway up close and personal, i dont find the new tower terrible. It hasn't grown on me but I think I've just gotten used to it.

What I would like to see is Hollywood Blvd remain as part of Hollywoodland and the backlot Hollywood themeing plussed with a Mickey Ride. Also, a reroute of the Red Car to go through the backlot. As I walked up Hollywood Blvd from the hub, I realized that it kind of gets a bad wrap that is a little undeserving. The real issues with Hollywoodland are the backlot and the fake sky backdrop. Everything from the right side of the Hyperion through GOTG:MB, the expansion pad and maybe the rumored bus area can go to Marvel Land. I still feel like they really put themselves in a box with the GOTG tower and its hard for me to imagine how it could fit into any sort of actual themed Marvel land. As Ive said before, it's really hard for me to believe that they could not have designed something that works better with rest of the park and whatever Marvel land ends up being.

Just realized I haven't explained how the Disneyland Gods shined upon us but I'm getting tired of typing and I'm not sure how many people will actually read through this wall of text. I will continue a little bit later...

thanks for the report. It looks like you noticed the same thing that i did. The concern people had about the tower looming over Buena vista street or hub is non existent and that the views from Paradise Pier or places like grizzley are really not as pronounced as pictures show when things are zoomed in.

It will be interesting to see what direction WDI takes to make that whole hollywood backlot and Hyperion corner work. That whole hidden street that leads to the tower ha always been an issue. Something drastic needs to be done to remove the fake facades and really strengthen the theming in the area. I notice that it is even worse when you are standing near the backlot area and you look down the street. The facades in front of the Hyperion are awefull and they seem to take quite a bit of real estate for nothing. They could easily build small structures to give the area depth that can be used for indoor queue or small fast food and merchandise posts instead of the ugly food trucks

Exactly. Tower of Terror was unseen from Buena Vista Street and Carthay Circle, so of course Guardians of the Galaxy will be unseen from those areas too.

Once you walk far enough back into Grizzly Peak, past Smokejumpers Grill and roughly at the 1960 Rambler station wagon, the Tower/Guardians begins to become visible behind Carthay Circle Restaurant. But by then you are well inside Grizzly Peak, supposedly in the High Sierra mountains circa 1961, so the real theme problem is why you would be able to see a 1920's movie palace in west Los Angeles from an airfield in the High Sierras. The building beyond Carthay Circle, Tower and now Guardians, is the least concern thematically for Grizzly Peak Airfield's visual intrusions on Carthay Circle.

In all seriousness thank you for the report. You've answered several questions I've had about the impact of the new facade on the park from different vantage points at the resort.

I'm with you 100% on being disappointed that the old Hollywood theme might be dropped and replaced by Marvel, but I suppose it's alright since aside from some nicely done facades on Hollywood Blvd HL isn't going to win any awards for WDI's best work. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that HL gets some serious place making and MB ends up on the border between HL and a new Marvel area adjacent and/or behind it much like the Matterhorn straddles Tomorrowland and Fantasyland.

I agree. The only thing is the beige TOT didnt quite say "hey look at me!" the way the new tower does. That and GOTG is a visual intrusion on the current theme of the park. DL next door also has visual intrusions between neighboring lands... Space Mountain, Matterhorn etc. it's just that most people find those structures to be visually appealing. Oil refineries aren't very magical.

If some trees were added behind the Disney Junior building the tower might be blocked from that view.

Lol @ the meme. And I agree I'm hoping for the same things. They just could of made it a hell out of lot easier on themselves to accomplish this.

Oil refineries aren't very magical.

That's true, but is DCA supposed to be magical? And I mean magical in the way that we understand Disneyland to be. For instance I've never thought of the word "magical" when someone says EPCOT, yet it's an awesome and unparalleled theme park experience as well as being unquestionably "Disney".

No not magical in the way that Disneyland is supposed to be but you said it perfectly. "Unquestionably Disney." I personally don't feel that when I look at the new tower.

Ya thanks for bringing up Grizzly peak, I forgot to mention it in my post. And since I was walking around yesterday with an analaytical eye, I realized how superb the theming is in that land. Especially after having been to Yosemite for the first time this past summer.

I'm hoping they spruce up what they keep of Hollywoodland as you say. (If they keep any of it that is). I definitely don't want to see New York. That is the most boring and predictable route they can go.

TRIP REPORT CONTINUED:

So after All of my rubber necking as I walked to Mermaid so I could view GOTG:MB from every vantage point like a weirdo we headed back to DL to meet my sister and her fiancée. They had picked up Space Mountain FPs and just so happened to find one on the floor with the same return time for me. This was the first stroke of luck of the day.

We rode the Carrousel twice ( sons favorite ride by far) and then on to Dumbo. As we stood in line for Dumbo (already queued up for the next ride) a CM comes over to me and asks if it would be ok if we go on the ride after next as they made a mistake counting the ride vehicles and needed to get a woman with a disability on the next ride. I said "no problem" and he said "thank you, come see me after." For some weird reason we ended up getting on the the next ride anyway but he still made sure to tell me "still come see me." When we got off the ride we walked over to this saint of a CM who took my AP and gave us digital front of the line passes (NOT FPs, these are walk through the exit, VIP Status passes) for our entire Group of 5 ( 4 adults plus the baby) for any 2 attractions of our choice at DLR. Elated, we walk away thanking him endlessly.

On our way to the Teacups, we started talking it out and decide that we should obviously use these VIP passes on RSR (we are rarely there early enough for an FP) and then for the second one we were more open but thought maybe we ll use it on TSMM as we already had Space FPs. So we get off the Tea cups and head over to pick up some Splash Mountain FPs for later. We then terrified my son real quick on POTC and head over to DCA to use our first digital "front of the line" pass at RSR as the sun is setting and it's my favorite time to ride it.

As we exit the DL Gates, a sweet Angel taps me on the shoulder and say's "are you going to California Adventure?" I say yes and she hands me three RSR fast passes. I proceed to bow, get on on my knees in the middle of the esplanade and praise her. Diana- thank you wherever you are. Now we re feelin pretty damn good as we walk over to RSR. Three of us ride RSR at Sunset. I immediately get off and re ride using child switch with my wife and sisters fiancée. Two rides on RSR in under 15 minutes. So it's about 8pm now and we re all hungry. We still have Splash FPs , Space FPs and both digital "front of the line" passes for any attraction of our choice still intact. Thanks to the surprise FPs from Diana. Keep in mind every FP/ front of the line pass is x2 for 2 of us due to child switch. So many rides so little time. Especially since we still had to eat dinner and watch the fireworks.

We head over to DL and decide to eat at Rancho Del Zocalo. We get our gringo proof carnitas burritos (they re not bad really) and tried to feed our son a toddler meal. He wouldn't eat a bite and I couldn't blame him. The toddler Arroz con pollo = boiled unsalted bits of flavorless chicken on some cold, sad rice. I grab BTM FPs for the group as everyone finishes their meal.

On our way to the find a spot for the fireworks now at 9:27 pm. So much for staking out a good spot . 9:31 - They announce the fireworks are cancelled due to "winds at a high altitude." It must of been at a high altitude because at ground level it wasn't very strong at all. So basically we missed out on using one of those VIP passes on TSMM because we wanted to make the fireworks. But nothing was going to bring us down. Not with the luck we were having.

We head over to Space and I ride with my sister and her fiancée using the FP they had found on the floor. My sister and fiancée then re ride using the exit (literally walk on) with my wife using child switch. In hindsight I should have rode RSR once and saved my re ride for Space. My sister knew what she was doing.:devilish:

It's 10pm now and we still have our digital VIP Passes for two attractions of our choice. We missed our Splash return time and nobody was really down to get wet at that time other than me anyway. We decide, what the hell, lets use our first VIP on Pan. My sister, fiancée and I wait at the exit talking to this gentlemen and scholar of a CM. Seriously just the Kind of CM who makes your day. As we re chatting he asks how we got these passes so I tell him the Dumbo story. He lets us thru the exit and we ride. SIDE NOTE: Pan was in kind of bad shape. I was reminded of how awful London looks after the 60th upgrades. The second star to the right (?) projection wasn't working and we could see some mechanism in its place that looked pretty bad. We got off and I thought that this line won't be worth waiting 50 minutes for ever again until they fix London. The good part was I only waited two minutes and was about to ride again with my wife as the digital passes were marked for 5 people and we only used 3 so far. As I'm waiting at the exit again, that same glorious CM asks me what my fav rides of the day were and what I would like to ride again. I say Space and as he is letting me onto Pan again he says "if I could shake your hand I would." I shake his hand and in it he leaves me another golden ticket to for any attraction up to 6 people. At this point me and my wife and can't believe the great luck we are having and how nice this CM was. I bow down to him inside of the exit as I did to Diana in the esplanade earlier. I walk back over to thank him and take a quick "selfie" of us. Ride Pan again with my wife and think to myself that I'm 99.9% certain I will never ride Pan twice in 5 minutes again in my life.

It's 10:45 pm. We now have 1 digital VIP pass left and we deicide to use it on Alice. Another ride we rarely get on that still had a 30 minute wait. We walk through the exit and get on the ride in 60 seconds. As we are going through the rabbit hole the MSEP floats are chugging by. Magical really. Also just a tip, great place to watch MSEP at the 10:30pm run. Right between Tea Cups and Alice. The Floats are literally inches away and there were only like 6 people standing there. So we ride Alice and I'm reminded that it's still my favorite FL style dark ride at the resort. I get off and you guessed it. Yup. I re ride with my wife as we got on again in under a minute. This time as we were working our way down the leaves, the finale MSEP float is neck and neck with us.

Time for BTM. And it's the same drill. Used FP, got on in 5 minutes and re rode with my wife and sister in under 5 minutes using child switch. Man, BTM at night is so damn fun! Really, probably a top 3 experience at DLR.

BTW, my son has been sleeping for the past hour and a half which is how this marathon became possible. (Aside from all the good luck)

Last but not least we head back to Space at 11:50pm for one last ride using the last "golden ticket" that the Pan CM handed me. Only once this time. Lol.

As we left the park around 12:30am after some Starbucks we joked about the crazy good fortune of the day and how it felt like all we had to do was close our eyes and stick out our hands and FPs would fall from the sky.

Anyway it was a great day and not what I had expected at all for this short trip that was supposed to be about fireworks and taking my son on a few FL rides.

Thank you Disneyland Gods.

PS. My fingers feel like they are going to fall off as I wrote this whole post on my iPhone.

I've had the same thoughts:
- Marvel Area starts at Tower and parking lot, maybe Bugs Land
- The backlot gets rebuilt with real facades and the Mickey ride and a new flex space for events
- Maybe reopen a dining area in the old Hollywod and Dine
- Reroute the trolley to turn right.

None of this perfect, but fixes a lot of WDIs poor planning of long-term use of space in DCA

I think they can keep parts of the Hollywood area and have it transition Into a full blown Marvel area.
Don't they have a movie in the works about I humans? What if they put subtle references of agents of shield? That series has taken place all over the world.
Another show that took place in California in a few episodes was agent Carter. Would be fun to see them play that angle
