Trip Report - December 7th and 11th

Prologue – Who’s Going?
I’m Kirk, a 29 year old Annual Passholder from Cincinnati who loves Walt Disney World and have ever since I was 8 years old. This is my third trip this year to WDW. My mom, who was there last year with her husband – my step-dad – is excited to go with me because of what she perceives is my expertise on how to do Disney right. We used to go when I was a kid almost every year, but we’ve never been there for the Christmas season, and we’re both excited to see all the extras. Mom and I are both very Type-A, impatient, driven, and fast, but we agreed that we would need to monitor that so that a) we didn’t kill each other and b) so we had a relaxing trip. We essentially decided that nothing trivial would get to us and we would make the best out of whatever happened. I mean, we were in Disney World, for crying out loud! How could that EVER be a bad thing? (No, that’s not foreshadowing. We really had a blast!)

December 7th - Day One – Arrive & Epcot
I arrived at the Greater Cincinnati airport in time to meet Mom, who was coming in from Columbus, and sat at her gate reading the Unofficial Guide 2006 to kill the time. I expected her plane any minute when my cell phone rang and she said she was in the terminal preparing to go to our departure gate when a skycap offered to drive her down. I took off towards the gate, as well, and saw her 50 yards ahead and called back and told her to make the guy wait so I could ride along. That was such a fun ride through the airport with this nice older gentleman. We made it to our gate with time to spare, so I bought a ham croissant from the deli and we boarded the plane shortly after.

We arrived on the ground and because the Mickey-hands people have been banned from the security checkpoint area, we went the wrong way and had to be redirected by someone. Check-in took less than 5 minutes and we got in line for the bus to the Animal Kingdom Lodge. We shared the bus with the Pop Century and Coronado Springs, and of course we were the last stop. But no worries, we had plenty of time before our reservation for lunch at Le Cellier at what I thought was 2:30 or so.

We finally made it to the AKL and Mom explored the vast lobby while I checked in. CM Michelle was very helpful and checked to see if there were any rooms available to upgrade to for free, but the hotel was sold out. We were able to go to our room, even though it was only a little after noon, and we had a nice pool view from the balcony of our room in Giraffe Trail #3012.

I thought it would be a good idea to go and check on our dining reservations for the entire trip, and mom needed to get tickets to the parks, so we went to the Lobby Concierge desk and to my dismay I once again encountered CM PAUL! OH THE HORROR! See, last time at stayed at AKL, Paul checked me into my room with less personality and lifelikeness than the bathing elephants in the Jungle Cruise. He couldn’t have been less friendly or competent. When I asked then about any chance of a free upgrade, he was personally offended and rude. He could not have been any worse at his job, I thought.

He proved otherwise.

I told him we needed a 4 day park hopper pass and he stoically began processing that. I got nervous when he didn’t ask for her room key and I said, “Can you put it on the key?” and he said, “Oh, I already did it this way. Uh, sorry?” I rolled my eyes at him and decided not to let PAUL ruin my day. I said, “OK, one more thing and we’ll quit bugging you,” you know, trying to be casual and aloof and friendly and he said something like, “Oh, OK.” What a moron. Anyway, I wanted my dining reservations printed and I wanted to change a couple of them around. He seemed to have difficulty understanding what I wanted to do and I nearly walked away to do it over the phone or later on with a non-animatronic CM, but I stuck it out and got done. My mom was puzzled by the whole thing, because she didn’t know PAUL and our tumultuous history and now began to think that most CMs don’t care about their jobs and have no semblance of a personality. Fortunately, we would discover differently throughout the rest of our stay.

When I looked at the printout of our reservations, I realized that we needed to hustle to EPCOT, because our lunch was actually 1:40 PM and not 2:30. We walked to the bus stop and waited for less than 5 minutes for the bus to arrive. We got to EPCOT very quickly (the idea that the AKL is remote and takes forever to get anywhere is a major misnomer – but its one I hope continues because I don’t want everyone to discover what an awesome resort it is) and walked straight over to Canada to check in lunch. We were early and they were running a little late so we walked outside to look at the flowers and landscape. While we were waiting, Papa Noel appeared in the distance and began telling his Christmas story. Sooner than we expected, they called us for our table.

Our server was Claude and he was very friendly and did a great job. Mom ordered the French Dip without onions and I got the Calgary Maple Barbecue Chicken sandwich. We both got fries and the Cheddar Cheese soup for an appetizer. Claude brought us plenty of bread. I love the Pretzel Bread and mom liked the multi-grain the best. When the food came, Mom’s sandwich had onions on it, so Claude had to take it back. It took FOREVER for it to return, but Claude and the manager were both appropriately apologetic. It tasted good and again nothing trivial was going to ruin our day.

Once we left Canada, I told Mom we needed to go ride Soarin. She was very accommodating with my recommendations, because after all, I’m the expert. So, we got in the standby line and waited for maybe 20 minutes. Mom just laughed and oohed and ahhed the whole time. She wanted to ride again, so we grabbed Fastpasses for later. I suggested we go ride Test Track, so after a quick restroom break in my new secret hidden restroom (inside the new Meet & Greet area by Innoventions), we literally walked on to Test Track. We only waited as long as it took for the pre-show to begin. I asked the CM to place us in the front of the car because of my knees not fitting well in the back and they were very accommodating. The ride seemed to go faster through the early testing phases than I’d remembered. Mom wasn’t blown away by the ride, but she didn’t hate it either. She’s not big on thrill rides, but is brave and will try most things once. Except Mission:Space – that was out of the question for both of us. I did it once on my last trip and I had to end my day after that.

Mom really wanted to see the Candlelight Processional, and so I suggested we start walking that way around the lagoon. We went inside Mexico and Mom suggested we ride El Rio del Tiempo, but then she must have remembered doing it in the past because she said, “Oh wait, is it lame?” And I said, “Well, yeah, pretty much, but we can do it if you want.” She walked out of that pavilion so fast I had trouble keeping up. Next stop was Maelstrom, and we walked right in. I instructed Mom that we would be walking straight through the theater and that she was to just follow me.

We got to China just in time to see the conclusion of a Chinese Children gymnastics squad. We browsed a couple shops in Germany, looked at the trains, and saw the line forming for the Processional, so we went ahead and got in it. We had no trouble getting a seat and we were one row back from the folks who’d bought the Dinner Package. I’m glad we didn’t fork out the money for that. I was exhausted by this point, having been up since like 3:30 AM getting ready and not being able to sleep from excitement. I caught myself dozing off during the choir concert. It was well done, but I’ve seen things like that all my life in various churches. Jaci Velasquez did a fine job, but it just didn’t seem all that spectacular to me. It really didn’t feel very “Disney.”

We left prior to the big finale to avoid the mass exodus and went into the American Adventure where we heard the Hanukkah story teller. She was engaging, but a little over the top. We watched the show, which I always enjoy, and then we went and rode Soarin one more time before heading back to the hotel. Once we got back to the room, we decided we were hungry, so we went to Mara. Mom got a banana or something and I got a burger and took it back to the room to eat it before crawling into bed for a good night’s sleep.

DAY TWO - Downtown Disney, Resort Hopping, and MVMCP

DAY TWO – Downtown Disney, Resort Hopping, and Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party!

It was raining pretty heavily today, but that wasn’t going to stop us from having fun. We took our time getting up and around and decided that we would do Downtown Disney in the AM, as Mom wanted to try to find some things for my 2 year old niece Kamryn. We got on the bus with several other folks who had the same idea, and we were on our way. It was almost 11 o’clock and I was hungry, so I suggested we try to get a table at the Rainforest Café before things got too busy. Mom was agreeable, but the restaurant didn’t open until 11:30. I decided to wait in the line while Mom shopped in the gift shop. She found a shirt on clearance for Kamryn, and they decided to open things up a little early. We were seated in the Gorilla Room, which did not seem all that much different from the Elephant Room where I sat last time. We were waited on by our server whose name escapes me and a trainee, whom the server introduced as a guy from the home office sent to keep an eye on him. He also told my Mom to be careful during the thunderstorms because the elephants often squirted water at the guests. She expected to get misted or something during lunch, not knowing he was kidding. I got a burger and mom got a gigantic Ceasar salad that she could not finish. We walked around the shops, which were all very crowded. We sampled some Ghiradelli chocolate and browsed the $9.99 and under store. She found a lot of things she liked at the World of Disney, and the lines were longer here than they were for any ride we went on the entire trip. We stopped by the LEGO store for a photo op and decided to head back to the AKL for a dry nap.

Once we were refreshed, it was time to head to the Magic Kingdom area. We had plenty of time before any of the MVMCP activities started, and I wanted to see the Gingerbread house at the Grand Floridian, so we hit the resort monorail and stopped to look around at all three monorail resorts. The Contemporary really didn’t have much in the way of Christmas décor, though I did buy some batteries for my digital camera. The Polynesian was nice, but again I was expecting much more in the way of Christmas stuff. We did walk out and look at the pool, and I could definitely see us staying there in the future, especially if we bring Kamryn in a couple of years due to the proximity to the MK. Finally, we hit the Grand Floridian, and the tree was beautiful. The Gingerbread house wasn’t quite what I was expecting, but it was neat to see. The live band was grooving with Christmas songs and there seemed to be a lot of people just looking around and killing time.

We got on the crowded monorail and headed to the MK, where we walked in and got our wristband early. It was only 5:30 and the park closed at 6 before reopening at 7 for the party. I wasn’t sure where we would be allowed to go during the 6 o’clock hour, but we decided that since we were already soaked we should head for Splash Mountain. I have been very fortunate this year that I have not had to wait in line at all for this attraction. We rode it, and mom had a great time. We walked on to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, and I really am beginning to hate the jerkiness of the ride. We decided to go back and do Splash again and this time we were the only people on the ride. I don’t mean just in our log, I mean on the whole ride. There were 6 or 7 empty logs in front of us, at least, based on the pictures at the end, and only one guy was getting on when we got off. It was awesome. I would have ridden again, just to say I stayed on but Mom had to use the restroom and was hungry. We ate dinner at Pecos Bill’s, and I don’t recommend the Peanut Butter Mousse Brownie. It was OK, but it didn’t taste as good as it sounded.

We watched the Christmas County Bears show, since I’ve never seen it, and I think its much better than the regular show. We got our free hot chocolate and cookies at the Columbia Harbor House, and relaxed while planning the rest of the night. We then did the Haunted Mansion, and the CM host named Tim was having a good time scaring the bejeepers out of the Pop Warner girls who were huddled together in the stretch room. We walked over to Phillarmagic, as I was in search of the exclusive Passholder’s pin, but the shop there did not have it. In fact, I had to go to City Hall to retrieve it later on. I asked the CM outside of PhillarMagic if we had time to do it before the parade and he said he thought so, so we walked in and really enjoyed the show. I really think that 3-D effects have come so far since “Honey, I Shrunk the Audience” and “MuppetVision” that those two out to be closed down or rethought completely. We waited for the parade to come and we watched enough of it for me to feel like I could say I saw it before we walked back over and rode “It’s a Small World.” It was just as mindless and annoying as it was when I was 11. We rode “Snow White,” and it stopped about seven times, making for an awful ride. The fireworks were about to start, so we grabbed a seat on a bench and waited. They were going off all around us, and I could sense that Mom was getting a little bored with them, so we rode Winnie the Pooh. They were still going off when we got out. We walked over and did Buzz Lightyear, which was fun. I made the stranger in the car behind us spin around at least once and they had no idea what was going on. We did Stitch’s Great Escape, which Mom liked! I thought it was better this time than last, but it still was not as good as Alien Encounter. We capped off our riding with TTA, and caught a glimpse of the ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas show, but the next one wasn’t for another 45 minutes and we were tired to wait.

We stopped at the Emporium, and I grew impatient while Mom tried on 2 different coats about 5 different times, so I went off in search of my pin. I finally found it and came back to find Mom almost ready to check out. We took the bus home and we both got individual pizzas from Mara before bed.

TOMORROW: Animal Kingdom!

DAY THREE: Animal Kingdom

DAY THREE: Animal Kingdom

Things looked dryer today, but we brought our rain gear just in case. We arrived in time for the opening ceremony, which I’d never seen. Before we got admitted through the turnstiles, we were entertained by a talking, walking, potted palm. Very entertaining. Once opening started, the crowd was delighted by Minnie, Pluto, and Goofy pulling up in the truck and when Mickey appeared on a lift by the tree, the place nearly erupted. It was a lot of fun. Mom and I walked briskly to Kilamanjaro Safaris to get a Fast Pass. We watched the first showing of Festival of the Lion King, which I thought was much better this time than last, though I was surprised to only have three human hosts and not four like last time. I guess the other guy was sick or late or something.

We walked back to the Safari and rode it, and I noticed that the Fast Pass really didn’t save us any time loading the jeep as we walked right up to the merge with no standby line, either. I really wish they’d merge folks later on from FastPass here. We saw lots of animals, and Mom really liked this ride. We walked through the animal path in Africa and saw several of the animals, but it was pretty crowded so we didn’t spend much time here.

Mom really wanted to ride the Kali River Rapids, despite my objections to getting wet and waiting in line for a mediocre ride. Well, there was no line, but it was still soggy and mediocre. I weigh near 300 lbs and Mom is a tall lady, and we sat next to each other. As the raft rotated, we ended up going down the big drop backwards. For any of you who’ve ridden the ride, you know that means we took the brunt of the wave. Mom just laughed and laughed while I glared at her, my feet soaking wet in a huge pool of water in the bottom of the raft.

We walked towards Dinoland U.S.A. past Everest and its even more impressive up close. They were testing empty cars on it and it looked like a fun ride. We walked into Tarzan Rocks! just as it was getting started. We didn’t stay long before Mom was bored and ready to go. I enjoy this show, only because I like live music of any kind, and the songs are good. But we left and headed over to Dinosaur, which I always love and Mom got a kick out of the adventure. I wanted to eat lunch at the Flametree Barbecue, but I was very disappointed to learn that they no longer had the Smoked Chicken sandwich. I got a half chicken instead, which wasn’t as good. It’s still a lot of food for a good price. Mom had some McDonald’s French Fries and we strategized the rest of our day over lunch.

Next stop was The Tree of Life and the Bug’s Life movie. I knew Mom would scream when we got stung, and I wasn’t disappointed. By this point in the trip, I am always dragging, so we headed back to try Safari one more time, but it had a 50 minute stand-by wait and it looked like rain, so we got ice cream at the slowest ice cream stand in the history of the world and raced back to the bus stop just in time to avoid the downpour.

We spent the evening in the room resting and reading and such. Tomorrow was the grand finale, and my favorite park, the Disney MGM-Studios!

DAY FOUR: Disney-MGM Studios

DAY FOUR: Disney-MGM Studios

I was up early and ready to go today, and it paid off. We were one of the first people admitted through the turnstiles, only to be lined up again, with no stores opened or anything. I found that odd. I would think they would want us to visit stores before allowing us to ride anything, but I guess it was just about crowd control. Anyway, the little weasly CM was giving out instructions as to how the rope would drop, and he was very clear that we were not to pass the CM. He was very authoritative in his speech, but not a soul was listening to him. Anyway, I told Mom to stay close because we would be booking it over to the Tower of Terror for a fast pass and then would be racing over to the Rock N Rollercoaster. She stayed close and we pulled it off. We walked into the Coaster and got the front seat of the car, thankfully, because my knees REALLY can’t handle the backseat. Mom didn’t like this ride, but at least it didn’t make her sick. We walked over to Tower of Terror to see how long we needed to wait before our Fast Pass became useable, but there was no waiting in the Standby line, so we walked in and got on right away. Mom was terrified of doing this ahead of time, but she really got a kick out of it. She thought the drops went on a little too long, and I was surprised when we got to the bottom and shot right back up for another drop. We bought the picture from our trip and found out the guy selling it to us was from near my hometown. He and Mom talked about people they knew while he rang us up. Small world, eh? And not the kind with mind-numbing moving puppets.

I decided to take it easy on Mom now and we grabbed a seat for Beauty and the Beast. “Four for a Dollar” did their thing and it was awesome. Then the show started, and the Gaston and Belle actors were very good. This was exceptional, really. It was time to head closer to the Sci-Fi Diner for our lunch reservation. We stopped at several of the shops on Sunset Boulevard, and Mom looked hard for more stuff for baby Kamryn. I had time to go buy the Jedi Mickey I’d promised my friend Connie and had it shipped to package pickup.

We put our names in at the Sci-Fi, and were seated in the backseat of a car with another family who had a small girl in the driver’s seat. Our server did a good job of making this feel authentic, pretending we really were in a drive-in, etc. I got a burger with swiss cheese and bacon and Mom got her burger with American cheese. We ate and then headed over to Who Wants to Be A Millionaire, and I have to say that I was much more impressed with the host I had last time than this time. This guy’s name was Jim and he was a tall, thin, African-American man who wasn’t really all that funny. I was 4th on Fastest Finger, which I was very happy about, given that I didn’t really know the answer. After this, we grabbed a Fast Pass for Mermaid and rode The Great Movie Ride. The lines were really non-existant for almost everything we did. We had the sweetest old cowboy, and he was really good.

Mermaid was next and we sat close enough to the stage that I could see the puppeteers, which I’d never done before. I like sitting back farther, I think, as that Under the Sea segment is really magical. The woman next to me kept complaining about the mist, acting like she’d just been Kali River Rapids with us or something. After this, we walked back and rode the Backstage Tour, which was fine, and walked through the Streets of America. As we did, out came Mulch, Sweat, and Shears. I love them. Mom bought us some Roasted Nuts, and we watched for awhile before walking over to Muppet-Vision 4D. Mom loves Statler and Waldorf. We shopped in the Muppet store for a bit, but they had a surprising lack of Sesame Street merchandise, so Kamryn didn’t get anything Ernie or Elmo, her two favorites.

It was time to lineup for LMA, and I was getting tired again. I liked the show a little better this time, but still found it to be poorly paced and to heavy on talking. MGM really needs a show like the old cowboy show at Universal – it wasn’t about exposing the tricks, it was about telling a story using stunts. We finished up and I was hungry, so we walked up to Package Pickup and I stood in the longest line in America at the ABC Commissary. We went to the last showing of Indiana Jones, which is so much better at night. The giant boulder failed, and it was interesting to see how they handled that.

Finally, we went over to Fantasmic! and grabbed a seat about 10 rows back. We were about 40 minutes early, so I bought Mom a hotdog and got myself a pretzel while we waited. This show is so well done, and its much more fun to watch sitting down and not cold. We headed back to the bus stop after this, and waited for a long time before a bus came to get us. The crowd was getting pretty riled up about this, and when the driver pulled up, he was greeted with an ovation that I’m sure he was surprised by.

We got back to the room after a very long day, and packed up most of our stuff so we could leave the next morning.

DAY FIVE: Going Home

We took the Magical Express back to the airport and had a very talkative and friendly driver named Bill. He was from Connecticut. Our plane left on time and actually got to Cincinnati early. I made sure Mom knew how to get to Concourse C and I drove home to take a much needed nap in my own bed.

Overall, this was a fantastic trip, though I don’t know if I’d go out of my way to go back at Christmas time. It was very nice, and I really liked all the décor and MVMCP was fun, but the lines were no different than they’ve been when I’ve gone in late January. I’m not sure when I’ll go back, but now that I’ve discovered Southwest flies from Indianapolis, I will be going back sooner than later! Thanks for reading.

Great trip report!

I recently went to LMA, also. I had seen it when they were doing previews. I could see much improvement (with the addition of the jet ski and more pyro effects).
