Trip Report Dec 2-Dec 9

We returned yesterday from a weeklong stay at Coronado Springs Resort. We spent seven nights at Coronado and got 8 days in the Parks. This was our fourth trip in four years, in total we had a traveling group of 7. But only myself, my wife, and daughter age 7, were there for the entire time. My parents stayed at Coronado the first three nights and visited the parks with us on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. They stayed in Orlando, but Coronado was booked up on Tuesday and Wednesday night, but golfed both Tuesday and Wednesday, although they did return to MGM late in the day on Tuesday. My grandparents stayed at Coronado on Sunday and Monday, but only visited the parks on Monday. We had an eight-day ticket, with no park hopping or no specials. We did not have the Disney Dining Plan. We drove from South Central Pennsylvania, and used our vehicle in and around the World.

I plan to write about each day of the trip, probably using a different post to do so. I can be pretty detailed, so I'm not sure how long this will take. But I hope that others will get some enjoyment out of the fine week that we had. As we go along, feel free to ask questions if you desire. I will try to answer them.

Day One - EPCOT

We arrived around 11:30AM at Coronado Springs. My parents had arrived about an hour earlier. Both of us were able to check into our rooms at that time. So we unloaded our week's supply and headed to EPCOT.

We arrived at the Park around 12:30 - and were hoping that somehow my parents would get the opportunity to ride Soarin'. We had a tight schedule with a 4:00 dining reservation at Le Cellier tied to our reserved seating for the Candlelight Processional. Unfortunately, when we arrived we checked the board and it showed a 70 minute wait. That was beyond our desired wait, so we went to check on fastpasses. No luck. The return was 4:25-5:25, or thereabouts and our dinner would interfere. Plus we were hoping to see the 6 o'clock tree lighting. So we opted not to get the Soarin' fastpass.

We went onto Nemo and were a little dissapointed to see a 30 minute wait time posted. We had some Disney ice cream to pass the time and it didn't seem that long, before we settled into our clammobile. The ride was decent, and I was amazed by some of the technology. However, I must say I was disappointed. Maybe I was expecting more than it provided. My daughter loved it, and she had a classmate who was there a week before who said it was her favorite thing at Walt Disney World. So it appears to have done well with the youngsters which I'm sure was the target.

Next we went onto Turtle Talk with Crush. This was great. We enjoyed it very much. My daughter wasn't involved in the production, but she still enjoyed it. Of all the regular attractions we saw on this day this was my favorite.

After this we headed for the World Showcase, and in particular Mexico and Norway. We spent some time in the Mexico shops, before heading out on El Rio Del Tiempo. It is a nice slow peaceful ride that everyone seemed to enjoy. Afterwards, we again gazed at some of the artistry in the Mexican shops.

Next, we were off for Norway and Maelstrom. The wait was between 15-20 minutes. You could see that there were plenty of people in EPCOT on the Saturday afternoon, but it was far from unbearable. We rode the ride, and most liked it, but we skipped the movie at the end, in order to make it the Norwegian Christmas Storytime. This was very interesting. It was nice to hear about how Norway celebrates Christmas, and the interaction between the two storytellers was both on cue and entertaining. God Jul!

After this, we headed to Canada and our dinner reservation. We were hoping to find Koda and Kenai for a quick picture and autograph before dinner and were not dissapointed. Many will say that characters are not as in abundance in EPCOT as at the other parks, but we have never found this to be the case. Although we do miss the character bus.

We had a great dinner in Le Cellier. We were in the Prince Edward Island section of the restaurant. The Canadian Cheddar Cheese Soup was great. We all got an appetizer, dinner, and dessert as part of the Candlelight Processional Dining package. I had the Le Cellier Mushroom Filet Mignon and it was great. I think the truffles added to it. And dessert did not disappoint either. If you have the opportunity to eat at Le Cellier, do it.

Our service was excellent, so we had more time than expected after dinner, and we took the chance that we'd get back to the tree lighting even if we spent some time in United Kingdom before it. We knew that Pooh and Friends were to be making an appearance. We were happy to find, not only Pooh, Tigger and Eeyore, but Mary Poppins and Alice greeting guests in the UK gift shop. We also got a quick listen to the British Invasion, before we headed back around for the tree lighting.

There was a large crowd gathered for the tree lighting, but the ladies were able to sneak inside the rope as they found room next to some folks we had met at dinner. My father and I stood next to the stage. It was an entertaining performance from Mickey and his pals. My daughter loved it.

We left quickly to make our Candlelight processional. We made the wrong choice of heading counter clockwise around the World Showcase, and the line formed on the other side. At least for those of us with reserved seating. Rita Moreno was very into her reading, and the orchestra and choir were very inspirational. For those who haven't been blessed enough to experience the Candlelight Processional yet, do so in the future. It was clearly one of the highlights of my trip. And the fact that each night different school age choirs rotate into the choir makes it even more amazing to me.

After the processional, we ducked quickly into the food court at American Adventure simply to view the large gingerbread house. It's amazing the craftmanship that goes into these things.

After two days of travel, and a long afternoon and evening in the parks we decided to call it a day. We had a busy day planned for Magic Kingdom on Sunday.

Great report so far. Keep it coming!!!

What are your thoughts on Coronado? It looks beautiful from outside, but so huge. Did you find it too stuffy or business like for a little kid? Just curious.

Thanks

Thanks for the responses...I wanted to answer TrentMom's question about Coronado, and then hopefully post about our day at Magic Kingdom later today.

I felt no stuffiness at all at Coronado. And minus one walk around the lake early one morning, where I'm sure I saw some business folks headed for an early meeting, I didn't think it had any different feel then any other Disney resort (PO Riverside, Pop Century, All-Star Music) that we had stayed. Maybe the clientele was more like Riverside than the value resorts, but there seemed to be a lot of families around.

Anyway, we thought the room was fine as far as size and decor go. And the cleaning staff, did a nice job with the room and adding extra special things (putting the remote in my daughter's Ojo's hands) to brighten the return to the room. Certainly not stuffy.

Obviously, it is big and widespread, but we had a vehicle, so it was not an issue getting to the main lobby for us.

We didn't really utilize the resort's amenities, somewhat because of some chilly evening weather, and somewhat because of our touring plan. But that was because of us. The amenities looked great, and my daughter was disappointed that time and weather didn't allow for a swim.

My two complaints were this....1) the food court is a little more pricey than any other Disney food court I've eaten in. You get a little bit of service with it, but you pay a service fee and the prices seemed to be higher. Not a big deal, but something to consider if you plan on eating three or four times or more in the food court.

2) It had to be the loudest resort we were ever in. I think it may have been a combination of thin walls, bad luck and impolite neighbors, but it was what it was. We had no problems when my parents were in the room next to us. But after that things got loud. On the morning we decided to start late, our new neighbors hit the snooze button six times and got two phone calls, and seemed to be screaming into the phone when they talked. On another occasion, we tried to take an afternoon nap (didn't bother my daughter) and the maids were in the room next to us. By using the doorstop, they went in and out and the door banged consistently. In addition, we could hear them dialing on the speakerphone punching in that the room was ready. Later in the week may have been our day of departure, from another room, we had a screaming child at about 6:15. The child screamed for ever. Or at least until 6:25. It seemed as if the parents did nothing. I didn't hear them. And at that point, I was sure I could hear everything that happened within a two-mile radius of our room.

Without the noise, I would highly recommend Coronado Springs. Because of the noise, it is hard to recommend, and probably would keep us from returning in the future. Again, as I did note above, it could simply have been bad luck and impolite neighbors. However, my wife insists that she heard more activity in surrounding rooms here than at any other Disney resort. She is sure that the soundproofing is better at others. I know that I heard stuff through walls at other resorts, but it was never a problem. It was a problem this time.

I know I waffled a bit, but I hope it helps some.

Thanks Orange for your review on the resort. Everything sounds great minus the noise and service fee in the food court.

We usually had breakfast there 3 or 4 times a week. What is the service fee for? Does someone clear your table and bring your drinks or something?

Thanks

Day 2 - Magic Kingdom

It's amazing how much work you return to after 10 days away. Sorry I've been slowing in posting this report.

TrentMom - the service fee covers a server who brings your drinks and clears your tables. I'm going to say it might have been as low as 5 or 6%, but it still is something you don't pay in any other food court that I am aware of. Obviously, you don't get the service either.

We arrived at the Magic Kingdom in plenty of time to see the park opening ceremony. This despite the fact that the finger imaging thing didn't seem to recognize my father. After several attempts the cast member overrode something, and ushered him through. It is always great to hear the opening at MK. It makes you smile if you are a Disney fan. This day was no exception.

My daughter wanted to ride Space Mountain with her grandparents so we headed for Tomorrowland. A lot of folks went with us. It seemed to take longer in line than the other times I've gone to Space at Park opening. Still the ride was good, and the line was relatively short, and we were off for Buzz Lightyear at about 9:20.

I have to be one of the worst players at Buzz Lightyear. I can never seem to find where my laser is firing. But I did manage to beat my mom, but my wife ended up our top scorer, which pleased her. After Buzz, I headed to get a Peter Pan fastpass, while the rest of our group looked at our pictures and met me at Winnie the Pooh.

Pooh had a short line, and we completed the ride just as Toontown was opening. So we headed to Toontown, and walked onto Goofy's Barnstormer. Obviously, Barnstormer is nothing compared to Space, but as the first roller coaster my daughter ever rode it still has a special place for all of us. We enjoyed the quick fast ride.

We followed with a walk through Minnie's house decorated for the holidays as an added touch, and made our way to the Character greetings in Toontown. Since Toontown had only been open for about 15-20 minutes, I didn't expect such long lines. Well actually only the Princess grouping had a long wait (45 min) so we avoided that. We did get to see Minnie and Daisy (why is she never around?) in one grouping and then Mary Poppins, Chip & Dale, and Pluto in another grouping.

After that we were excited to find Chicken Little just as we were exiting Toontown. As my daughter got her first autograph from Chicken Little, I set out to get fastpasses for Splash Mountain and met my family back at Peter Pan. We took our tour over London and off to Neverland. I think Peter Pan is one of the better dark rides at Magic Kingdom. Maybe its because it was always a story favorite of mine as a child.

Next we rode It's a Small World. The ride had been closed when my parents were with us two years ago, so my daughter wanted to be sure they got to experience it this time.

We had lunch at Columbia Harbour House and used our Fastpass at Splash Mountain immediately afterwards. Well we were diverted for an autograph with Brer Fox on the trip through Frontierland, and my daughter and father shot at the shooting gallery on the way. Splash continues to be one of my favorite rides in all of WDW. I think it magically combines the Disney animatronics in many fashions, and adds that little bit of thrill adventure to go along with it. We did get more wet on this ride than normal, but the weather was cooperating.

The wait for Thunder Mtn was more than 30 minutes and we decided to call it a session and head back for an afternoon break. My daughter had been suffering from a little bit of a cold before we left, and we didn't want her to play herself out early. Plus we are big fans of afternoon breaks. We planned to return that evening for Spectromagic and Wishes.

On the way out, we got a few more autographs and pictures as Captain Hook and Smee were in Adventureland.

My grandparents arrived from Southern Florida later that afternoon and we had made a last minute decision to have dinner with them. We wanted to eat early, so we would be sure to be back for Spectromagic and Wishes. I called Disney Dining about Tuesday before arriving hoping to get a reservation at Maya Grill, but was told that they didn't start serving til 5 o'clock. We wanted something more in the 4:30 range. The representative suggested Trails End because it was close to Magic Kingdom and was a buffet. We shouldn't have any trouble eating and getting back in time for the parade. The trouble was I'm sure the rep told me Wilderness Lodge. So we arrived at Wilderness Lodge and quickly found out that Trails End was at Fort Wilderness. And the chaos began. They held our reservation at Trails End, but traveling by vehicle, and then by internal bus at Trails End, left us with even less time than originally hoped for, for dinner. Trails End does a nice American food buffet. Carved Meats, Fried Chicken, ribs and a great variety of good fresh vegetables. But by now I was worried about getting through the internal bus system, back to the Transportation and Ticket Center Parking onto a tram, onto the monorail and into MK by 7 for the parade. Then I decided to send the family by boat from Fort Wilderness and they could secure the place along the parade route, and I would make the rest of the journey. We planned to meet somewhere in front of Casey's. It worked well, they got there with plenty of time to spare, and I made it about 10 minutes before the start of the parade. We even got a place directly across the street from Casey's.

Regarding Trails End, I would recommend it to anyone at MK, who wants to leave the park by boat travel to Fort Wilderness have dinner and head back to MK. Its a good buffet reasonably priced and within a short boat ride of the park.

We stayed where we were after the parade, which was magnificent as always. I love the music for Spectromagic, my wife just loves the lights. And about 10-15 minutes before Wishes we headed out into the middle of Main Street for the tremendous firework presentation. Wishes began four years ago, on the night we left for our first family journey to MK, and I've always loved it. We've watched it from a lot of different places and angles. Being back with a straight on view of the castle seemed to make it more amazing once again.

The park stayed open for EMH, but we were tired and had an 8am breakfast reservation at Animal Kingdom to look forward to.

There are definate downfalls to driving yourself. There's a direct bus AND boat that connects WL with Fort Wilderness. The boat also goes to the Contemporary.

Glad to hear you had a great time!

The mistake wasn't made in driving ourselves. It was in driving ourselves to the wrong location. I'm certain that my own transportation from Coronado Springs to Fort Wilderness would have been more efficient than the transportation that Disney would have provided, had I gone to the right place the first time.

Now maybe once I was at Wildnerness Lodge, I should have just taken a boat to Fort Wildnerness, but I was pretty flustered and didn't think it clearly at the beginning then.

Resort to Resort is quicker yourself, with the exception of those connected by Boat, Monorial, or Direct Bus.

I find that resort to theme park is quicker by WDW transit. IMHO.

Glad to hear you had a great time!
