Trip Report (11/10-11/17): Disney Adventures with a Toddler!

Preface: This trip has been in the works for quite some time. My wife and I had been to WDW three years in a row in 98, 99 and 2000 then our daughter Jordan was born. This trip was special for two reasons: first, we finally get to introduce our 2 year old to Disney World and second, we are celebrating our 10th Wedding Anniversary on this trip.

(As others always warn this will be fairly lengthy and it may take several installments over several days so bear with me please. I hope you all enjoy my report as much as I’ve enjoyed reading everybody else’s over the last few months in anticipation for this trip!)

I'm breaking this up to make it easier to read. Enjoy!

Day Six:
The weather was beautiful. Finally cooled off to a nice 72 degrees, slightly cloudy.

Had breakfast at Whispering Canyon. Omelettes made to order and not too bad. Jordan loved the Lincoln Log Table, but we’re still working on sharing skills so she got kind of grabby, nothing unusual for her.

Drove to Disney-MGM Studios. This was our first sight of the Hat. I don’t particularly care for it. I much prefer seeing the Chinese Theatre at the end of the Street. Got there at opening and of course everybody was rushing toward RnR and ToT, so we went on the Great Movie Ride with a 2 minute wait. Got to see the Holographic Chess Board from Star Wars in the queue which was really cool. Not having learned our lesson about ride with the daughter yet we braved it. Not quite as dark so we thought she’d be ok. No such luck. She really didn’t seem to care for it, although she did recognize Singin’ in the Rain to some extent. Otherwise she was a mess. Yes, we are horrible parents, but we can’t learn what she likes and is scared of without some experimentation. Jordan survived and we went in search of the Playhouse Disney show. I forgot to grab a map of the park and we ended up wandering around New York Street and went the opposite direction, but it worked out. Playhouse Disney was great except for one thing. I forgot to pack my second charged battery for the video camera. ARRGGHHH! The whole reason we bought a new battery and I forgot to put it back in the pack before we left. Beat myself up all day about that stupid mistake. Learn from my mistakes, always put your second battery directly back in the bag after recharging!

We were lucky enough to find a nice hidden little treasure at MGM. Across from the ABC Commissary in a little nook, hidden behind some bushes is a small garage. Look for the Scream Canisters in the pushes and the very small roped off queue area with the garage door having the Monsters Inc logo on it. No times are posted and I don’t think it’s on the park map. We were lucky enough to wander by and see the scream canisters. Stopped and heard something banging on the door. We waited a few minutes and the door opened. Behold! Mike Wazowski! What a treat. It’s just a tiny little room and it’s pictures only, no autographs. They told us later in the day Sulley might be there. Jordan loved meeting Mike, gave him a big hug.

We had lunch at the Prime Time Café which is always delightful. The food is never fantastic, but it’s decent and the atmosphere and theming are the best. We were greeted warmly as usual and our server was one who knew how to perfectly balance the role. She played it loosely as a “cousin” and didn’t slam it down our throats, which is what I like. On prior trips I’ve seen some CM’s who take the role way too far for my tastes. I had the Open face Steak sandwich which was a little fatty, but otherwise decent. My wife had the Turkey Sandwich, which was so large she left half of it and Jordan had what else, the Macaroni and Cheese. Finished it all off with the Lemon Meringue Pie in honor of Walt.

After lunch we headed toward RnR, which was down for technical problems, so we baby swapped ToT. No wait, but it was still nice to have the Fastpass Babyswap ticket anyway. Jordan and I had fun sitting outside the Hollywood Tower Hotel waiting on mommy and then I got to go. This was my first experience with the random drop sequence and it was great fun. Can’t wait to see the new one starting in January, but that’s a long way off for us.

RnR was still down so we gave it up and headed back to see if Mike and Sulley were out again. Got there just as they were cutting off the line. I understood the necessity, wasn’t happy, but knew we’d just come back. My normally sweet, kind wife turned into ferocious protective mother cub and started grumbling, but I got her away before she could properly start berating the poor CM. It worked out because they told us what time they’d be back. We had time to do Muppetvision which I think Jordan liked, but she didn’t want to keep the glasses on, go figure!

After Muppets we headed back and waited first in line for Mike and Sulley. A nice English couple stopped by and asked what we were waiting on and they decided to stay. We finally got to see both Mike and Sulley and we all had great fun with it.

From there we headed back to the resort. Jordan was in desperate need of a nap. We took advantage of the time to shower and relax.

We had PS at Restaurant Marrakesh, which we should have known was not necessary, but we were cutting it close on time. Drove to Boardwalk thinking to outsmart Disney by parking there and boating to World Showcase. Found out why they had a sign up saying they couldn’t allow parking for MGM, or Epcot, we tried it anyway. Not a parking place to be found. Circled around four times and finally played vulture to an older couple walking to their car. Felt like a stalker, but you do what is necessary. We were running late, which for us means only fifteen minutes early, at this point. Decided not to wait for the boat and took off walking around the Boardwalk. Of course after we left the boat dock the boat turned the corner and headed toward dock. We kept going across the bridge and just barely made it into the gate ahead of a tour group of 182 people. We raced across the second bridge and into France and made our way breathlessly to Morocco with one minute to spare. Didn’t matter of course. They had plenty of seating available. We took a minute to go get Jordan’s picture with Aladdin who was in the shop directly across from the restaurant.

At dinner ordered the Marrakesh Feast. Brewats rock! Jordan really liked them so we ordered those for her dinner. The feast consisted of Brewats, Lemon Chicken, Beef kabobs and vegetable couscous with assorted baclava pastries for desert. We both tried the mint tea, which I loved. We were seated right next to the small stage and enjoyed music and the belly dancer. Jordan really liked the music and watched the dancer intently.

After dinner we walked around Morocco for a while. This has always been my favorite country. It’s usually overlooked by people which is a big bonus. There are so many details to see. I was disappointed that the carpet weavers were not there, but there’s a lot more to see. We left Morocco and found a seat on a bench with another nice family and waited for Tapestry of Dreams. It got a bit chilly that night and we were glad we switched to jeans and jackets. Tapestry of Dreams was great. Not as good as Tapestry of Nations, but still very enjoyable. Most importantly Jordan went nuts over it.

After the parade we went back to Morocco to look around a bit more which was great because nobody else was there, we had the place all to ourselves and it was quiet. Didn’t stay for Illuminations because Jordan was really starting to drag, so we boated back to Boardwalk I was happy to see they fixed the K in the Boardwalk sign. We stopped at Seaside Sweets and got some chocolate covered pretzels and a Mickey Cookie for Jordan. The cookies were very stale.

We went back to WL and got off to bed to end a perfect Disney day. Again the crowds were bad, but no lines. It was disappointing that RnR was down, but that happens. World Showcase is best experienced at night in my opinion. It just seems so much more magical to me at night.

Stay tuned….

Day Seven:

While waiting for the rest of the family to get ready I sat out on the balcony and noticed a nice little detail, which I assume was intentional in the construction at WL. The panels around the balcony were secured with hex screws, not regular flat/slotted, or Phillips head screws. These type screws I believe are made in Canada and are primarily used in construction in Canada and the Northwestern US. Cool!

Walked into the Lobby of WL to be thoroughly disgusted that they were putting up the Christmas tree and finishing up decorations. The ambient lobby music was changed to Christmas carols. I was extremely mad. My wife enjoyed it, but I’m sorry, I didn’t go there for a Xmas trip. I went there to experience the unblemished, normal WL. At this point I hadn’t had time to videotape the lobby without the Xmas stuff, which made me even more upset. Trivial to some, but serious to me.

Breakfast at Whispering Canyon. I had the French Toast, which was very good. Not as good as the Stuffed banana french toast at Dixie Landings, but good.

We then head off to MGM once more. My wife finally got to ride RnR with no wait. She couldn’t ride it in 2000 on our last trip because she was pregnant, so she’d never experienced it. We baby swapped and I rode it after her. We got fastpasses to do it again after the Beauty and The Beast show next door.

Beauty and the Beast was a good show and Jordan enjoyed it immensely. We then went to use our Fast passes to find out RnR was down again. Disappointment, but at least we did get to ride it once.

We ate lunch at the ABC Commissary. I had something called Feijadora, which was black beans, pork and rice. I thought it was decent at the time, but I will never go back to the Commissary. More on that in a moment.

One Man’s Dream was very nice. I thought it was a well-done tribute to Walt and very moving. I only wish we had more time to stroll through. Jordan liked seeing all the pictures, but tended to distract us because she wanted to run back and forth a lot and she was getting tired. We watched the film at the end and really enjoyed it.

We went back to the room for a nap. I woke up not feeling so well and started getting sick. I won’t go into the details, but it turned out our evening was a disaster. We had PS for Libery Tree Tavern at 6:45. We misread the schedules and thought the park closed at 7:00 p.m.., but it actually closed at 6:00 p.m.. We arrived at MK in time to do Tiki Room before everything shut down. By this time I was feeling much worse and visiting the restroom quite frequently. We checked in to dinner and it was a zoo. I didn’t eat anything and spent most of the time in the restroom and we had to leave before they could bring desert. Luckily they were kind enough not to charge me since I didn’t eat. Ironically, my wife says that Jordan had a great time with the characters. My only experience before running to the restroom was when the first character came in I turned on my video camera with the external light on because the room was very dark. I only did this when the character came to our table and the “bouncer”, for lack of a better term ran in the room with rage in his eyes and yelled at me to turn it off. Granted, I was sick which probably colored my perception, but this guy was rude and his attitude was unnecessary. There was no warning not to use lighting and I only did it this one instance because the ligthing in the room was horrible. I promptly turned it off after he yelled at me, but his whole attitude and treating me like a child who had misbehaved terribly at dinner really made me mad. The night got worse as we figured out we were effectively stranded at MK. I was very sick by the point we were walking out and the boat back to WL was closed and no bus was running. Fortunately, a kind, efficient CM called at the bus depot called us a special bus which had us home in under five minutes. Didn’t learn his name but THANK YOU!

The rest of the evening wasn’t a total loss because my wife and daughter went swimming while I stayed in the room in the bathroom. In between attacks from the Revenge of Feijadora I videotaped the Resort TV loops in peace and quiet. After we put my daughter to bed I felt a bit better and my kind, loving wife ran down and got me something to eat. This was of course, our worst day of the entire trip.

One more day at the World to go...

Finale

Day Eight:

We got up early. I was feeling better and we drove to Epcot for our early PS at Norway for the Princess Breakfast. It was a very nice overcast day. We were there for the opening of the breakfast. The fruit and breads were good and just as we got our first platter of family style breakfast out popped Snow White. We had fantastic seats right near the door the Princesses entered from so we were the third table to have Princesses visit each time. Aurora, Mulan, Belle and Jasmine all came out quickly in succession. Jordan had a blast. She asked all morning, without prompting to see Jasmine and she got her wish and loved it. I highly recommend the Princess Breakfast especially to anyone with a little Princess in the family. It’s well run, organized and the food is decent. Little ones under three eat free!

From the Princess Breakfast we made our way to Test Track and did the Baby Swap. Anybody recognize the male in the pre-show video? It’s actor John Michael Higgins who is a character actor with a long list of appearances. The film I recognized him from was Best in Show. He was fantastic in Best in Show!

Walked over a looked at Mission: Space. Looks interesting and can’t wait for it, but I know it will be a while before we get back.

We headed over to Living Seas. Jordan had a great time watching and waiting for the crash of waves in the sign out front. She screamed with glee each time and got excited about going in to see the fish. I let her run toward the entrance, but she wasn’t paying attention to where she was going. Just as I told her to be careful and watch where she was going she ran head on into the corner of the slanted low wall right at her eye level and landed on the ground screaming and crying. We were lucky she didn’t cut herself, or put her eye out. But she immediately started swelling and turning black just under her eye. We took off for First Aid, back on the other side of the park at Odyssey. Now we have stickers that say I visited First Aid, with Mickey on them! We got some ice packs and got her calmed down.

Decided to go back over to Imagination to ride Journey into Imagination. I had to steer things back there due to important PS we had for lunch at Garden Grill. Jordan was apprehensive about the ride at first, but seemed to like it more than the other “dark rides” she’d been on by the end. We played in Imageworks for a few minutes then went out to look at the jumping fountain.

At the Land we made our way to Garden Grill. This was the first time we’d eaten there. I had called and added the “Rehitching ceremony” to our PS several weeks ago when I first read about it on the boards here. My wife knew nothing about it. We asked for a seat on the lower level and our food was phenomenal. The Pumpkin bread was tasty and hot and the rest of the meal was great. Before desert the manager came to the table and said she heard we had an anniversary. She made us stand up and yelled to the whole restaurant that it was our 10th anniversary and we wanted to get remarried. My Wife was totally surprised. One CM took our still camera, one took our Video camera and Pluto came over and wrangled Jordan while the Manager did a quick ceremony. It was a lot fun. Pluto even licked the bride! We got a nice certificate signed by Mickey and Minnie. Then we had our pumpkin cheesecake desert which was absolutely wonderful.

After that our day got much better. We rode Living with the Land, finally went to Living Seas and finished up at Ice Station Cool. My wife wouldn’t let me give Beverly to Jordan. We then went back for Jordan’s nap.

Returned to Epcot to spend our last Disney evening there, which has been our tradition. We traded off on Spaceship Earth. Jordan had fun putting her picture up on the network tree. We then boated to Morocco and over to try to do the American Adventure, but we missed it by a few minutes. We head over to China for counter service dinner and went shopping in China. China’s always the best place to shop. Found a lot a great deals there and even did some Xmas shopping. Unfortunately we were too late to make the last show of the American Adventure. On our way out we stopped for a last look up at SSE and we found our Leave a Legacy tile. We said goodbye to Epcot and headed back to WL for the night.

The next day was rain allday long! We got soaked at Disney Marketplace and went to visit friends in Kissimmee. Then we spent 2 ½ days driving back to Ohio to end a wonderful vacation.

Great Trip report! Thanks! Isn't it amazing how much different a trip to WDW is with a toddler? Not more difficult, necessarily, but definitely different! Sounds like all three of you had some great times.:)

Going with a toddler is definitely a different experience altogether. I'm glad we've been able to experience WDW as adults without a child first. I think those going for the first time ever with kids are missing out because you can't possibly know what you are in for, or what to expect.

We've been multiple times and no the parks well and we found ourselves finding not only new and interesting things to explore, but there were times we needed to look for places that we didn't know existed, or where they were for sure.

Still a magical experience, but you are right, a different kind of magic.

Quick question for you……
What did you do for your daughter when it came time for naps and overnight? We are taking our 20-month-old daughter down in 8 days and we know she will not fit in a pack and play on this trip. We had thought about getting 3 bed rails to put around the bed, so we didn’t have to worry about her. She is a major mover in her sleep and it wouldn’t work for one of us to sleep in the bed with her. Kind of wondering how you guys handled it. :veryconfu

BTW…..Great report! Keep it coming! We will be staying at the WL for the first time on this trip, so this is a great report for us to read.

We took my son to Disney the end of September, he was 22 months at the time and getting pretty big. We stayed at POR and they have trundle beds, he loved having his own real bed. We of course got some extra pillows from mousekeeping and put them around it so he would not roll off under the bed. But it worked geat for us because by the time we got to bed at night he was worn out and had no desire to get up.

Hi.....

I really enjoy reading your report...probably because you did not only focus on the MAGIC of Disney but also on some of the things that are NOT so magical. I'm the same way, and I appreciate that honesty.

Anyone who writes a trip report and says basically "everything was perfect" is trying to fool us or themselves!

You responded to my post about the early Christmas decorations and I totally agree with you! When we walked into the Polynesian on the 13th of November and the first thing I saw was a lighted Christmas tree I wanted to cry!!!! Not tears of joy, mind you! I did NOT want to be reminded of Christmas in any way, shape, or form! I don't like Christmas in the stores 2 weeks before Thanksgiving and I definately don't like it at Disney! I think it's tacky, tacky, tacky! I see Christmas lights on around my neighborhood and I still have my pumpkins, scarecrow and Thanksgiving flag out! I mean--it's not even Thanksgiving yet!!!!
The Christmas carols just absolutely put the icing on the bitter cake so to speak! No Hawaiian music this time, but instead we had some Spanish caroling for the most part. Yuck. If I wanted Christmas, I would have gone in December.

Just curious as to why you said you wouldn't be back "for awhile". Are you waiting for your daughter to get older, or do you have other vacation destinations to try? Just curious as to why you do not want to return sooner.

Thanks for the great report!!!!
Have a nice holiday,
Christina

Didn't mean to give the impression I didn't want to go back. If I had the money we'd go back in the Spring after Space opens up. I'd go as often as possible, but not a fiscal reality right now.

The main reason I said it would be a while is that we hope to add a new member to the family in the near future. Depends on how nature works if you know what I mean;)

If we do have a new baby we'll probably wait another two years after that to go again:(

Unless I would win the lottery or something, but you have to play it to win I suppose.

Glad you liked the report. I enjoyed writing it.

Thank you for a most enchanting Trip report. I would print your reports off and take them home to share with my Sister. I would phone her after supper and it would be our nightly entertainment. We so enjoyed sharing in the experience of Jordan's first visit to WDW. I hope you have saved your report to put in a scrapebook for Jordan, it was delighful. Good luck on your next "magical" project.

Budget cuts are becoming apparent in some of the lack of attention to details. I had never seen cigarette butts on the ground at any of the parks, let alone a pile of melted gummi bears I almost stepped in. Further, we encountered several CMs that seemed to be rushed due to understaffing. The lighted Boardwalk sign at Boardwalk had the letter K burned out which really bothered me and our table at Spoodles was sticky and hadn’t been wiped down properly. All minor things you would expect somewhere else, but not Disney. But, the overall experience of our first day was magnificent as usual.

You know its funny ( and I don't mean to be rude) but, us Disney faithful are so incredibly spoiled...I mean there is a couple of cigarette butts on the ground that a CM had not gotten to yet and an electrical malfunction in a sign (which you said was fixed the next day) and people complain......you should take a look at IOA or Sea World..they are pretty nasty compared to Disney........I go to Disney about 8 to 9 times a year and EVERY time I am amazed at how well Disney can keep clean and maintain so many different prperties.....I think we need to cut Disney some slack every once and a while......just a thought....again I'm sorry if i came across as rude

Nothing rude about what you say. Some truth in it. I agree to a certain extent with you, but you have to understand that I DO expect that high degree of quality at Disney as opposed to anywhere else. That's why I don't go to IOA. This trip just seemed like I noticed more of a lack of attention to these small details that make Disney Disney and that worries me.

Yes, I saved my trip report and I am going to print it out for Jordan. Now that it's done I can start working on going through the many DV tapes of all the video I took to put together a vacation video for us.
