Trip Report (11/10-11/17): Disney Adventures with a Toddler!

Preface: This trip has been in the works for quite some time. My wife and I had been to WDW three years in a row in 98, 99 and 2000 then our daughter Jordan was born. This trip was special for two reasons: first, we finally get to introduce our 2 year old to Disney World and second, we are celebrating our 10th Wedding Anniversary on this trip.

(As others always warn this will be fairly lengthy and it may take several installments over several days so bear with me please. I hope you all enjoy my report as much as I’ve enjoyed reading everybody else’s over the last few months in anticipation for this trip!)

I'm breaking this up to make it easier to read. Enjoy!

Day One and Two (November 7th & 8th)

Day One: We packed the car and left Ohio arriving in Lexington, Kentucky around 4:30 p.m.. We checked in to our hotel, rested for about 30 minutes and headed to a shopping area nearby to relax in a bookstore for a while. Off to dinner and to refuel before morning and return to the hotel to bed down for the night.

Day Two: Up early, ate breakfast at hotel and headed south on I-75. Our time on I-75 was made much more enjoyable by Dave Hunter’s Along I-75 Book, which I highly recommend to anyone traveling Interstate 75. The book gives you 25 mile maps per page detailed with all the information any traveler needs regarding construction, speed traps, locations of shopping, gas stations, restaurants and the book is full of interesting stories, tidbits, history and personal accounts of various areas along the highway. It made the miles fly by reading the vignettes and looking for things listed on the maps.
Traveled from 9:00 a.m. to shortly after 5:00 p.m. Atlanta rush hour traffic was very slow, but finally arrived in Covington, Georgia to spend two nights with family.

Day Three (November 10th)

November 9th we spent the day in Covington, Georgia with family and stayed overnight. I won't bore you with those details.

Day Three: Left Covington, Georgia at 8:00 a.m.. Some rain sprinkles, but the weather cleared eventually. Ate lunch in Valdosta, Georgia. Stopped at the Disney Information Center in Ocala, Florida. This was the true start of the Disney experience. Our two year old was ecstatic to see Mickey Mouse in the windows outside. She loved the figure of Belle inside, had to hug her and tried to climb up in the car with Mickey on the display in the middle of the entry room. Bought a Limited Edition Anniversary pin for the Ocala center and 2 T-shirts. My wife picked up the Haunted Mansion Hearse.
Shortly after we left Ocala I looked up at the sky ahead as I drove and found an oddly shaped bank of clouds. Startled my wife when I pointed at the windshield and said “Get the camera, it’s Tigger!” I hope the picture turned out. I swear along the last 60 miles to Disney there was a cloud bank shaped exactly like Tigger’s face that smiled down on use. I’ll let you know if the pictures turned out later.
Our daughter was asleep when we hit I-4, but my wife and I were giddy with Disney excitement. We both agreed we wish Jordan had been awake, but it was nice to share the magic of arriving at Disney just between ourselves one last time. We arrived at Wilderness Lodge around 4:45 p.m.. Slowly drove up Timberland Drive and up to the entrance. The place was very crowded with lots of new arrivals, including us. Bell services and valet services immediately greeted us and started helping us unpack the car.
Valet car service was one aspect of WL I hadn’t encountered in planning our trip. We went ahead and put the car in Valet services and decided we’d get it out later. We later came to the decision that we deserved some pampering and we paid the $6.00 per day to keep the car in Valet Service. (More on that later).
Walked through the front door to a burst of cold air and I was immediately struck with a sensation I wish I could bottle and take home, the smell. Never noticed it before, but WL has a distinctive smell all its own. Writing this the fragrance of the Lodge is still burned into my nostrils and can be recalled upon a thought’s notice. I know that won’t last for long and I am truly going to mourn the loss of that particular sensation. Alas, video and cameras don’t capture smells.
The lobby was incredibly beautiful, but booming with activity. There was a line at check-in, but it moved fairly quick all things considered. We waited only about 10-15 minutes, or I should say I waited, and my wonderful wife chased our overenthused toddler who immediately fell in love with two things; first, the frog on the totem pole, second, the spring/fountain and bridge in front of the main elevators. While standing in line I got to hear the dinner bell/triangle being rung at Whispering Canyon Café and I knew the fun was beginning officially.
The CM at check-in was very nice and thorough. The Disney Magic truly kicks in a check-in. I was slightly disappointed we did not get the King size bed I had requested, but we were delighted to learn we had been upgraded from standard to courtyard view. The CM also handed me a large envelope from Reservations. I had previously written to Guest Relations explaining this was our 10th Anniversary. It paid off with a nice little surprise. I opened the envelope to find a nice certificate commemorating our 10th Wedding Anniversary which was the first of my surprises for my wife. The CM also told our daughter that Mickey heard she was coming and handed her a bag with a gift from Mickey. It contained a coloring book, crayons and some stickers. Perfect for a 2 year old!
We went to our room and our luggage arrived shortly thereafter. We were in room 6015 on the 6th floor, the highest floor in the wing we were in with a wonderful view from our enclosed balcony. We had to lift Jordan up to look out into the Courtyard, but that wasn’t a bad thing. Her first comment was to point down at “the friends in the pool”. To her mind all the people in the pool below were friends to be met. I guess 2 year olds naturally have the spirit of Disney! We took some time to unpack and then headed off to dinner. We hadn’t made PS, but decided to try to get in to Artist Point.
After having only been at WL for an hour I decided the theming and ambience was almost overwhelming, in a good way of course. Artist Point has always been one of my favorite restaurants and this trip confirmed it as my absolute favorite. It’s the most serene place to dine for some reason. The service is impeccable and the food is exquisite. We started off dinner with the Venison Spring Rolls. I ordered the Grilled Buffalo Sirloin, my wife had the Mixed Grill (Venison, Lamb and Rabbit sausage) and Jordan had the Mickey Mac and Cheese, of course.
After we ordered I asked my wife if she remembered why we came to Disney World this time. She said for our anniversary, at which point I presented her with the Emerald necklace I had brought all the way from Ohio.
Our server Suzie was very nice and an excellent waitress. We finished dinner off with the Chocolate Bread Pudding, which was absolutely fabulous. We left Artist Point relaxed and infused with Disney magic. We walked around the lobby and then outside around the perimeter to the Lake and back. We then went shopping at the Mercantile place. We had to get matching t-shirts for our first day in the parks. After that we headed back to our room, and off to bed to prepare to introduce our daughter to the Magic Kingdom the next day.
My last thoughts for the day were of the vast number of people. I had been to WL in passing to eat at Artist Point before, but had never seen the lobby bubbling with people. That concerned me about going to the parks. What would park attendance be like? Stay tuned to find out more. Same Mickey time, same Mickey channel!

Those last few weeks of waiting are torture. Trip reports helped get me through too.

I have a busy schedule at work today, but I'm going to try to put together the next installment sometime today.

Day Four:

I awoke at 6:00 a.m. at the first sound of a shower next door. Couldn’t get back to sleep so I decided to get up and dressed to have a look around the resort by myself. Took the video camera and filmed some of the resort before my wife and daughter woke up.

After I returned to the room everybody got up and we watched the sunrise together which was really nice. We ate our first breakfast at Whispering Canyon Café. My wife just had to ask for Ketchup. Luckily nobody else asked while we were there so we didn’t have to cart it all to the next table. The breakfast skillet was ok, not the best food, but definitely not the worst either.

Rode the boat from WL to MK and arrived just as the character caravan arrived and the train pulled into the station. The pre-opening bits started as we entered the security check tent. (More about those later). The security check only took a few minutes and by the time we were through the gates opened. Perfect timing. Lots of people. This worried me, but it turned out that a common theme throughout our trip was masses of people in the parks, but virtually no wait in lines for attractions. We pondered whether it just seemed more crowded than we were used to because this was our first trip with a child in tow and a stroller, but concluded that no, there were just a lot of people.

Lots of characters wandering around. The first character Jordan saw was ironically Cruella De Vil. She had been on a 101 Dalmatians kick lately and we’d been reading the story repeatedly. She told us before the trip that she didn’t want to see Cruella. So, of course, Cruella looks down into her stroller as we walked by and says “Have you seen my puppies?” Jordan was kind of quiet, but didn’t looked to thrilled with that interaction. Headed up Main Street toward the Castle. Didn’t get the gleeful reaction of the first sight of the Castle from Jordan that we expected, but she did comment on the Castle a few times while strolling up the Street. She did seem to warm up to the Castle quickly, but overall Jordan’s first morning in MK was rather surly. Not sure if Cruella De Vil put a damper on things, but it didn’t help. I think she was rather tired from the drive down and disoriented by the overwhelming introduction to the World. We went to the Pooh ride in Fantasyland first. This was to be Jordan’s first ride of any kind, other than a carousel at a zoo back in August. She was quite apprehensive when the ride started but by the time we started bouncing like Tigger she started enjoying herself.

We walked over to Toon Town Fair to find it didn’t open until 10:00 a.m.. Off to Dumbo. My wife took Jordan on Dumbo while I waited and taped it. She really liked Dumbo, but we figured out part of the surliness. Jordan wanted to see Mickey. King Mickey was her ultimate goal we soon learned. Since Toon Town Fair still wasn’t open we went to Small World. Jordan once again warmed up to the ride after being hesitant at first. She liked the music and I twitched through the whole ride. We stopped at one point in the ride, which was a nightmare from my perspective, but it was over in a few minutes.

Now, off to Toon Town Fair. We were the first to line up at the rope from the Fantasyland side. When the rope went down we rushed with every one else to the Judge’s Tent to pay homage to the King. Only waited about five minutes for Mickey. The funny thing is this is what my daughter was geared for, but she wasn’t smiling. Rather, as we stood waiting to get her picture with Mickey she had a fierce look of determination. This was a toddler on a mission. Her immediate destiny, as she perceived it was to hug Mickey Mouse. When it was her turn to step forward she ran and hugged Mickey tightly. She didn’t want to let go. When we got her to turn around for a picture she still wasn’t smiling. It was rather comical and I can’t wait to see our pictures, but the kid was just all business. This was serious business. Of course leaving Mickey wasn’t pretty. No screaming fit, but some whining and a little tear here and there and we were off to the train ride around the park over to Frontierland. Mom and Dad had to go see there favorite attraction: The Haunted Mansion.

We walked around Frontierland and sweltered in the heat. That day it got up to around 86 degrees. Rode HM. Jordan whimpered during the ride and wasn’t to thrilled with it. Live and learn. We later figured out that it wasn’t the content that bothered her, rather the darkness. After HM we trekked backup Main Street to the Monorail and headed to Epcot via the TTC for our lunch PS at San Angel Inn at Mexico.

Lunch at San Angel was perhaps the worst dining experience I’ve had at Disney. The waiter was inattentive and almost rude. The menu was seriously lacking. Jordan said she wanted a taco and the waiter told us they didn’t have tacos, that she could have a chicken quesadilla. He took our order and ten minutes later came back to confirm what I had ordered because he forgot. Then, we asked for some shredded cheese to top off Jordan’s quesadilla after the food finally came and he outright lied to us saying they had no shredded cheese. He was almost offended that we made a special request. Later, the waiter did come back with a small plate of shredded cheese without a word, proving he had lied to us earlier. He was focused on a large group next to us drinking lots of drinks and speaking his native tongue. The food we had was mediocre at best and the service was horrible. I was so offended I left no tip and vowed I would never return to San Angel to dine again.

After lunch we decided to redeem Mexico for ourselves by riding El Rio del Tiempo. By that time we were all very hot and tired and it was time to return to the Lodge for a break. Jordan fell asleep in her stroller and slept the entire bus ride back. We all napped in the room and cooled off for several hours before heading out again for the evening.

When we left for the evening the benefits of valet parking at WL began to show its value. We drove to Boardwalk for our PS at Spoodles. One thing we noticed upon walking into the entrance at Boardwalk with our stroller was the lack of any obvious signs showing you a handicap/stroller path to get down to the Boardwalk itself. Luckily we had been there before and knew there was an elevator as you turn right and go down the hall at the Boardwalk entrance.

Spoodles was not very crowded when we arrived. We were seated promptly and our waitress more than made up for our wretched waiter at San Angel earlier in the afternoon. The service was superb and the food fantastic as usual. At the end of the meal we asked for our complimentary Smoothie from the Disney Club card and the server even suggested we take it in a to-go cup with a lid to share with Jordan while we looked around the Boardwalk. It was a very thoughtful suggestion which was well appreciated.

We hopped back in the car and went shopping at Downtown Disney at World of Disney. Time to put the last vestiges of our Disney Club Card to good use. Spent way too much money and still had more shopping to do when we were through. After an hour of serious shopping we went back to the hotel. The Marketplace was absolutely packed. Again, I’d never seen so many people. We usually go in January when crowds are very light and I thought November was supposed to be similar.

Reviewing our first day at The World we made some observations:

Budget cuts are becoming apparent in some of the lack of attention to details. I had never seen cigarette butts on the ground at any of the parks, let alone a pile of melted gummi bears I almost stepped in. Further, we encountered several CMs that seemed to be rushed due to understaffing. The lighted Boardwalk sign at Boardwalk had the letter K burned out which really bothered me and our table at Spoodles was sticky and hadn’t been wiped down properly. All minor things you would expect somewhere else, but not Disney. But, the overall experience of our first day was magnificent as usual.

Our wait times were minimal: 10 minutes for Monorail, 15 minutes for a bus from Epcot to WL, 10 minutes for Dumbo and Haunted Mansion.

The worst part of our first day at The World was definitely the lunch at San Angel and the Rude Server. The best part of the day was Jordan getting over her early surliness later in the day and talking about Mickey, Cinderella Castle and riding Dumbo, as well as returning to WL and basking in its serenity and “homey” feel.

Sleeping arrangements

Quick question for you……
What did you do for your daughter when it came time for naps and overnight? We are taking our 20-month-old daughter down in 8 days and we know she will not fit in a pack and play on this trip. We had thought about getting 3 bed rails to put around the bed, so we didn’t have to worry about her. She is a major mover in her sleep and it wouldn’t work for one of us to sleep in the bed with her. Kind of wondering how you guys handled it. :veryconfu

BTW…..Great report! Keep it coming! We will be staying at the WL for the first time on this trip, so this is a great report for us to read.

Sleeping arrangements

My daughter turned two in August. She still sleeps in her crib at home and she had no problems fitting into the portable crib supplied by Disney at WL. She slept quite comfortably and loved the fact that her bed had Mickey Sheets:)

If your child won't fit you may try the bedrail thing. The Queen beds are pretty big for a toddler so unless they roll around a lot you may not have a problem with that, but keep in mind that the beds at WL are very high off the ground. By that I mean between the frames and the mattress they are very high up.

I'll keeping working on the report, but one quick note to help you out. Definitely take a stroller. We bought a lighter weight stroller to take and it worked out great. I was hesitant because I really like our good, heavy duty stroller, but I'm really glad we didn't take it. We couldn't have fit it in the car and lugging it around wouldn't have been fun.

Also, I highly recommend taking advantage of the Valet car service. It's $6 per day plus whatever tips you give, but it's well worth it, especially with kids.

More later...

A thought about kids and beds.

At Wilderness Lodge you can request bunk bed rooms. They were great for our kids 8 & 14, but I would consider them for a toddler. When we were there in Jan 2002, they had the Fisher Price mesh bedrails. (mousekeeping left one in our room. It was gone the next morning)

What is great about bunks is that the top one becomes another horizontal surface on which to pile stuff (diaper bag, bags of souvenirs, toys, etc.). Makes the table a little less junky.

Was the portable crib a small one with green sides? (We had a small one with green side at CB in January and she just fit in it then). Or was it a bigger one? A normal size pack and play would be fine, but those smaller ones wouldn’t work.
We will be bringing our bigger stroller, because Kayleigh will sleep in the stroller during the day. Our lightweight one doesn’t recline and this one does.
Thanks for the tip on Valet car service, but we aren’t renting a car. Tiffany Towncars are picking us up at the airport and bringing us to the WL (and back). DH and I like the convenience of Disney Transportation, so we won’t need the car while we are in the WORLD.
Any tips to make the trip go smooth with Kayleigh would be very helpful. And thanks for your help with the crib questions.

Thanks for the input. That was something else I was thinking about. Have to bring this option up to my DH.

Our crib was green, but my daughter really didn't have a problem fitting into it and she's pretty tall for her age.

I usually like Disney Transportation too, but I'd rethink renting a car. We have always relied exclusively on Disney transport, but with a toddler and a stroller we found ourselves driving to MGM, AK and Epcot, as well as Downtown Disney. Waiting in line with a tired, cranky toddler for a bus then lugging the stroller, diaper bag and anything else on and off buses is not fun. The boat to Contemporary, or MK from WL are fine, you can even usually just roll the stroller on with the kid in it, depending on the CM. Monorail is fine from MK-TTC-Epcot too, but it's a lot nicer having the car.

Day Five (November 12th)

Day Five:

Once again I woke up at 6:00 a.m.. Got to spend some nice quiet time taking pictures of the resort lobby by myself. We had breakfast at Roaring Forks Food Court. This food court was significantly smaller than we were used to at Dixie Landings, but has most of the same type offerings. It does tend to get very crowded in the mornings as people are getting ready to go to the parks. The bonus is that you can run down, get food for the family and take a tray back to the room much easier here than at other resorts which are spread out.

We drove to Animal Kingdom. Waited at the front gates for about 15 minutes prior to opening. My wife had a nice chat with an older CM who gave her some interesting tidbits about the lady who does Tinker Belle at MK at the close of the day before the fireworks. She said the lady is 72 years old and her sister did it before her until she was 96!.

At opening we got pictures of Jordan with Timon inside the gate. She absolutely love all characters, except the aforementioned Cruella. She was much happier the second day at the World and seemed much more acclimated.

There was a monstrous line for the Safari right after opening so we grabbed Fast Passes and went off to Rafiki’s Planet Watch. We were the only ones there on the first train of the morning. It was phenomenal. I highly recommend anyone with a toddler do this. We hadn’t done it before. The open animal pen was great fun. Jordan grabbed a brush and brushed every goat in the place, even one standing against the fence asleep.

Inside the Conservation Station we watched the silly little mermaid puppet show and were lucky enough to find Rafiki which Jordan loved. She got to hug him and had him all to herself for a few minutes. We left Planet Watch and went on the Safari. Monstrous hit with Jordan, not so much for the animals, but the ride itself. She loved bouncing around in the vehicle and the rough road.

We ate lunch at Rainforest Café at AK. Lunch was good. My wife really enjoyed her meal. Can’t remember what she had at the moment. Jordan wasn’t too thrilled during the first storm when the gorillas started getting noisy, but after a few times through she convinced herself it was ok. I told her the rain made them scared and they decided to have a big party to make themselves feel better.

Re-entering AK we stopped and played at the Elephant spitting fountain outside the entrance. Jordan had to get up and touch the fountain. I lifted her up and we both got soaked. Great fun and considering it was a record high of around 87 that day, didn’t feel too bad.

Went back into AK to shop for a while. Stopped and saw Stitch and on the way into Harambe stopped to watch and listen to the drummers. Jordan loved that.

When we returned to our room that afternoon we found all Jordan’s stuffed animals playing in a towel built canoe. Every day of our stay we had something new to look forward to from Mousekeeping. We tipped $3.00 per day and they did a really nice job. I was especially pleased that each day I put away all the Mickey coasters and to my delight our Mousekeeper left me a nice, large new stack every day. So, I came home with a stack of easily over a hundred

Jordan was too wired to nap, so we headed over to MK via boat across Bay Lake, with a brief stop at Fort Wilderness. A very nice ride. I highly recommend it. Of course Jordan fell asleep on the boat and slept in the stroller through Main Street for the next hour. We got some shopping done and were going to try to make it to see Storytime with Belle. Jordan woke up five minutes after it started, so we skipped it to return for the last show. Stopped in at Cosmic Ray’s because I’d never been there and listened to a few songs. Lot of fun.

By this time serious storm clouds were moving in and nasty weather was inevitable so we headed over to the TTA/People mover thinking it was a nice chance to sit down and be under cover if the rain hit while we waited to go back to see Belle. At this point we finally learned that Jordan was deathly afraid of rides in the dark. Never in our wildest dreams would we have thought TTA would bother her, but she screamed, cried and trembled every time the car went into a dark area. Not a pretty situation. Luckily, the storm held off and we made up for the TTA fiasco with front row seats at Story time with Belle. A must see, something we'd never taken the time to do before.

Made it out of MK to the monorail just in time before the parade started and before the rain hit to get to Contemporary for our PS at California Grill. Dinner at Ca. Grill was phenomenal as usual. We were treated to the fireworks from the Ca. Grill just before the evil storm hit. I had the pumpkin ravioli. Sounds weird, but it was magnificent. Brenda had the free range chicken which she said was incredible and Jordan as usual had her macaroni and cheese. Deserts were great too, apple tart, bread pudding and the children’s fruit with dipping sauce. We were very lucky that the storm moved in and out during our dinner and we had a much cooler, but nice ride by boat that night back from Cont. to WL.

More to come…

Interesting trip report. My hubby and I are old pro's at WDW, but our next trip to WDW (March 2003) will have our then 23 month old daughter with us. (We took her a year ago Dec 2001 when she was 8 month's old.) Funny she loved TTA when she was that age, she may react differently this time. (this will also be around our 10th wedding aniversary!)

We considered staying at WL for our next trip (it is our new DVC home, but we haven't tried it yet) But changed our ressies to BCV because we really wanted the pool there.

Tell me what kind of stroller did you take? We are activly looking into getting a new light weight one easly fold up one and can't decide (Combi, Maclrean or Evenflo lightwieght.) We are open to new ideas too. We have the best Instep backpack/stroller we took last year, but fear she will be too big this year for it.

We also plan to take Tiffiany town car (never have rented at car in the 7 trips to WDW in the past)

I couldn't agree with you more. My wife and I have been going almost yearly since we honeymooned there 3 years ago.

Each time we've been very disappointed with the selection and the service. We skipped it on our last trip last month because we knew we could do much better back home in Atlanta.

Sorry about the rush hour traffic by the way :brick:

And that's awful that the Boardwalk Sign was burnt out. We stayed at the Boardwalk Inn right before halloween. The whole place was undergoing renovations. New paint in the lobby. New boards on the boardwalk. I'm sure that the sign was only a temporary glitch.

The new stroller we got was fabulous. It was a Graco Kite that we bought at our local Wal-Mart for around $40. Folds up easily, lightweight, storage area underneath with a canopy hood, reclines and has removable trays. Our daughter loved it and it actually folded up small enough to rest on top of the luggage in our overstuffed trunk:lol:

Haven't gotten that far in my report yet, but they did fix the K in the Boardwalk sign by the time we got there two evenings later, which did restore some of the bit of lost faith I had in Disney on this trip.

Atlanta traffic was interesting. We had no problems and glided right through until we hit dead in the middle of downtown about two miles from the exit we needed onto I-20, then we moved inches at a time.

As for renting a car like I said before we've always used Disney transport, but with the stroller it just seemed easier most of the time to drive which was a bit of disappointment because I actually like to use Disney transport, part of the experience to me.

More report either tomorrow or Monday...

Love your trip report! I keep coming back every day to see if there are any updates!

About San Angel Inn--I've been there twice and have found the service to be lacking as you have written. I thought (after my 2nd time) that this must be a cultural thing. I watched and saw the same lack of service at all the tables around me--by several different waiters. For example--they bring the chips and salsa but everyone waited 5 minutes or MORE before the drinks came. We were not the only ones breaking out our water bottles to drink from because we had no beverages yet.

But we love the food there. It's not the Mexican food that we are used to like from Taco Bell or any other "authentic" Mexican restaurant that we may have near our homes. The food at the San Angel is real Mexican food, which is different than the Mexican-American food that most of us are familiar with. I think that's why most people are disappointed in the food when they go--they are looking for Taco Bell-esque food and when nothing like that is on the menu it can be quite scary!

BTW--we tried the salad with the cactus in in last time and it was great!

Keep the super report coming!

San Angel

The first time we went there in 1998 it was phenomenal. The Mole Poblano was excellent and the service was good. It's just never been as good as that first time for some reason.

Hope to get more of the report up tomorrow...
