Travel Outside WDW

Hi all,

It's been a long time (about 8 years!) since our last trip to WDW but we've now booked for 2017! We're staying at the Caribbean Resort, my first time there and obviously there have been quite a lot of changes in the parks since my last trip too! Excited!

Previously my wife and I just caught taxi's to other parks, like Universal, but this this time we're going as part of a big family trip (16 people) and my sisters are wondering what the best way to get to Universal with young kids (between 5 and 11 years old) is.

I've found some info on car seat laws (http://www.dmv.org/fl-florida/safety-laws.php if others are interested) so that clears a few things up.

The question I have is: do the laws apply to Taxis (i.e. will they need to buy / hire car seats if we choose to take Taxis).

Are there better options that taking Taxis? Car hire is an option if needed.
Thanks all!

The car seat/booster seat laws in Florida are always a bit surprising coming from Europe. Hopefully someone local will chime in, but I don't think anything other than wearing a seatbelt is required for anyone older than 5 years old. That being said, when my child was 6 and again when she was 8 I still had her use one in Florida so that I wouldn't have to have the "but why do I have to use one at home if I didn't have to use one when we were on vacation" conversation (our law is 12 years old or 150 cm, whichever comes first).

Thanks for the info: I think I edited my question whilst you were posting as I found this: http://www.dmv.org/fl-florida/safety-laws.php, which echoes what you said.

Kinda surprised that anyone 18 and over don't need to wear a seatbelt!

If anyone knows about the Taxi situation (or even if you can hire a taxi specifically with booster seats) then that will be helpful!

You might want to look into "BubbleBum" - an inflatable booster seat. It's what I usually travel with; its all the more useful for me because not all taxis have booster seats in my city and they can refuse to take you with your child. The last thing I want to do when coming back from a long trip is to hop on a bus with luggage, so when the taxi doesn't have a booster seat I pull out the "BubbleBum" and there is no longer a problem.

As a general rule, many taxis won't have car seats. They don't want to have to spend the time to take them in/out as the need dictates, and really don't want to have them taking up a ton of space in the trunk that would otherwise go to luggage for their fares. Thought I had seen somewhere about Uber adding the ability to request a car seat, but no idea if that actually took off or not. If you call the cab dispatch instead of just grabbing one out of the line, you may have some luck with requesting car seats.

Thanks all.

I think you can request car seats with Uber too, but it looks like we may end up just hiring a car or two (along with car seats) and share it out amongst us. Seems like the easiest option at the moment.
