Transportation questions

My family and I are cruising in May and trying to decide on logistics before the cruise. It will actually be five families coming together to cruise! We have some staying at the Hyatt airport the night before, and some staying at the World. We would like to arrive to the port as early as possible. My husband and I have taken the cruise transfer from the resort and were slightly disappointed with the time we arrived. My questions are: Is it possible to arrange Magical Express from a resort to the airport without a flight? This would allow us to take the cruise transfer from the airport with the other families. If that is not doable, does anyone know if shuttles/taxis/car services from a resort to the airport require two year olds to be in a car seat? Thanks in advance for the help!

Not to advocate lying, but Magical Express does not verify that you are on the flight you claim you are on. If you tell DME that you have a 9:00 AM flight on the day of your departure from WDW, they will schedule a DME ride around 6:00 AM. Clearly if you were to try to do resort check in, that would not work, but just getting on the bus - not an issue. There was sombody on these boards who did something similar, not to meet a cruise transfer, but to go to the airport in the middle of a WDW stay for some reason.

If you don't want to go the whole "mystery flight" DME route, you could also rent a car. There is usually no extra charge for a one way rental when returning it at the port. You could then rent a car seat to go with the car. Or, you could rent a car and drive to the airport, but then you are still paying for Disney transfers. It is most likely cheaper and easier for you to rent a car at the airport when you arrive, drive to WDW, stay at WDW for the night, drive to the port, and return the car.

If you are considering renting a car, you can actually bring your own car seat on your airline for free. I can't guarantee on all airlines, but the three we use all ship it for free, cheaper than renting one. We have progressively needed more and more of them (my kids just keep on reproducing!), we now ship three, and their stated policy is that they are free. As is a stroller if you bring it.

Addendum.....I would never consider taking my grandkids in the car without one, even if they allowed me. Value proven to me last month when I had all 3 in my car when a drug impaired driven nearly took us all out. Praise the Lord they were in car seats, no one hurt from a pretty bad hit, we adults didn't fare as well. I want a car seat for me next time!!

I was going to suggest that as well, but then he (or she) is stuck on the cruise with a car seat in their cabin. Not the worst thing ever, but a car seat costs about $10 a day to rent. So even if they rent the car the day they arrive and return it the next day in Coco Beach, that's only $20. I would pay $20 not to have to drag it on the plane, get it from baggage, bring it on the ship, store it in my stateroom, and then fly back home with it.

True.
Didn't think about having to store it in a cabin

Thanks for all the help! We are still considering our options. We have so many angles and separate families to consider. I will let you know what we end up doing!
