When we are encouraging our kids to train (or they want to) we either take walks around the neighborhood at night and run a bit or we supervise them on the treadmill.

I work most nights and dont get home until 11:30-12:00. We dony have a treadmill so I am having to find a way for him to do some training with me since I could do mone after work. He has problems with sleeping in school so I can get him up earlier then he already does. Should I just train with him on weekend mornings? Or is that to much at once/too long a time between?

Does he want to do the kids runs or the Family 5k?

Training for the kids runs shouldn't be too bad as they have 200m, 400m, and a one mile race. The only one that will really require training is the one mile race which doing a run/walk training on the weekends should make him more than ready for.

Now if you are planning on doing the the 5k that requires a bit more training, with several runs a week being optimal. Also if you are aiming for 2015 no need to get him training now for a one mile distance, about 3-6 months out should be good.

Getting your kindergartner up 20 minutes earlier than usual to get some exercise would only benefit them in my opinion. Get them in bed 20 minutes earlier, get up 20 minutes earlier and get out the door. Go up the street and back. It takes my 5 year old daughter about 14 minutes to run her mile with me. Then I go on my longer runs. The days she doesnt want too, or too tired, I encourage her to do it, since she committed to do it. She always feels so good about herself when she completes her mile.

You can make this work if you want too during the week. It will take some routine changes, but once you and your family get use to it, there is no reason why you couldnt.

Exercise first thing in the morning will only start your kids day off better. That, then a good breakfast. You can always find that extra 20 minutes.

right now his routine is he goes to bed between 7 and 730 and he gets up at 630 to catch the bus at 6:52 his teacher say that he's really good in the mornings but its in the afternoon when he has problems staying awake. if he gets woken up during the night he doesn't fall back asleep very easily. do you think that the early morning exercise may help with some of these problems as well?

I havent asked him yet. I need to talk with him and show him the differce between the distances. So far I just asked if he was interested in training with me and he said he was and has shown lots of interest. I am doing this for two reasons I want to get healthier and am really interested to try running at least a half marathon.

All you can do it try it out on a 3 week basis and see if it improves etc.

If I was in your shoes, Id get him up 20 minutes early on Tuesdays and Thursday, and then on Saturday and Sunday run. That is 4 days total. Plenty at short distances. Just see how it goes. I would give it 3 weeks to give time to adapt and adjust.

On the days my 5 year old exercises, she is more alive and alert longer. As long as she refuels properly with good food.
