Tommy Kirk Old Yeller.jpg

I was catching up a little today with yesterday's paper, and I saw Tommy Kirk in the birthdays, turning 72. Of course it reminded me that I am getting older myself (late 40s), but I will always think of Tommy Kirk as a teenager, primarily from "Old Yeller" but also from "The gy Dog" and other Disney live-action classics (even some with Annette and on the MMC). And, of course, Kevin Corcoran will always be his younger brother.

I personally think that they lived in a charmed time in some ways. I know that other things happened that weren't so great, but it must have been fun and a special memory to be on the Disney lot at that time. They even knew Walt Disney himself.

And I really liked the Disney live action films from that time period. Some timeless classics there. I actually think that "Old Yeller" ranks right up there with "Mary Poppins" as timeless. We loved the family, cared for the dog, and felt for Travis (Kirk) when he had to make a big decision about his dog.
Anyway, just made me think about those movies... and how much heart and soul and clean fun they put into them.

Are there other live-action Disney classic movies that made an impression on you? Or characters who will be forever young for you?

(And by the way, for the younger generations, it might also be telling that Rider Strong -- "Boy Meets World" -- turned 34 today. Another person who for many will forever be identified with his teen role.)

Amazing. And Don Grady (at far left in cast around Walt picture) has actually passed away. Few people know that he was actually a great musician, and that after the MMC and My Three Sons, he went on to write and conduct symphonic music scores and songs often for modern Disney shows and cartoons. We here know a lot of his work, without associating him to it....

Yes... there is a whole slice of TWDC that I'm sure most 'fans' online today have no connection to because they've not seen the films of that period. They really need to sit down in a marathon and soak in those films... come on Disney channel.. you don't need to show Jesse 6hrs a day.. show us some of your classics!

I am a youth leader at my church, and I remember one day in the '90s when I was first doing this when one of the fifteen-year-old guys was at my house for the afternoon after church waiting for youth group later that evening, and he saw that I had the original "gy Dog," and he wanted to see it because he had remembered watching it often on the (real) Disney Channel as he grew up. He loved that movie. At the time he was going through a tough time in his family life, and watching that movie felt like a comfort zone.

When those movies were on the Disney Channel, kids watched them and most enjoyed them. They were timeless and left impressions. Why do you think "Old Yeller" is still cited today in a modern country song and other places? (But how often is the modern Disney Channel, even from the last ten years, cited, except at how many of its stars went bad?)

The Disney Channel should feature the timeless classics alongside the new programs, like they did when they were a premium channel (which is probably the problem, but still should happen).
