Tokyo Dining Room

I just got back from a short 5 day trip to the world and decided to forgo teppan edo for the tokyo dining room. i had heard good things and i was getting a little tired of teppan...not that it was bad i just needed something new. I was extremely let down by both the food and the service and i was wondering if anyone else had this experience, or if it was just a fluke? pun intended

i ordered the tuna tartare and the monkfish liver foie gras for appitizers

the tartare wasnt even a tartare, it was like a sesame seeded ball of seared tuna and was served to me in a plastic cup. the sauce on the bottom was bland....kind of a wasabi mayo thing that tasted like it had been squeezed out of a bottle.

the monkfish foie gras were these three disks of what tasted and looked like spam.

none of the roles looked special so i ordered some sushi and sashimi sampler as a main. i guess you could say the sushi wasn't bad because it didn't taste like fish but the problem i had was that it didn't taste like anything! no flavor except for the salmon roe which was obviously old or of very low quality.

The sushi at Tokyo Dining is sub-par. It's really quite unfortunate.

In the opinion of this connoisseur, the only good sushi at WDW is at the resorts. Kona Island Sushi Bar at the Polynesian has fresh food and a decent variety but is lacking in atmosphere. Kimonos at the Swan is a bit overpriced but gets crazy fun in the evenings when it turns into a Karaoke bar. At the top of the list, the sushi prepared by world-class chef Yoshie at the California Grill at the Contemporary is the absolute best at WDW or anywhere else in my opinion.

We had a similar experience on our first and last visit. We had an ADR for a party of 10 that grew to 11 at the last minute. Due to the party size increase they had to break out party up and seat us separately. No problem there. They sat 4 of us just after our ADR time however, they forgot about our party of 7 that remained. I inquired about this about 1/2 hour after our ADR time and was told that we were getting the table right in front of the hostess stand as soon as it was cleared. It was clear about ten minutes later and they promptly set a group of walk ins at our table. Well I went into Richard mode, talked to a manager and we were finally sat about one hour and twenty minutes after our ADR time. While there was an apology no other compensation was offered.

The food was fair at best. It was nothing I could not get at my local hole in the wall Fuji Sushi here in Jacksonville at half the price with ten times the service.

The only plus to the evening was a great view of illuminations from their balcony.

I agree. Definitely the worst meal on our last trip. I don't think that I'm a sushi snob, will even sometimes eat it from our local grocery store (Earthfare) if I'm really jonesing. But the sushi at Tokyo Dining was practically inedible. :hurl: Daughter had the tempera veggies and it was pretty gross too. Sad really. You would think that the sushi would be the one style of cuisine that they would try harder to perfect in that corner of the world. Will not return and would not recommend to anyone.

Oh this is distressing to hear. My wife and loved the tempura last time we went. I admit they were a bit slow with service but it was nice, we have ADRs lined up for when we go again.

Yeah i guess i really have to make it over to kimonos. it just stinks that they are not open for lunch because usually i like to eat at the bluezoo whenever im at the dolphin but i think next year i will substitute kimonos for the tokyo dining room. i wish there was a good sushi lounge open in the world for lunch or a mid day snack. i find it harder and harder to find good lunch eating as well. i tried a bunch of places in epcot but to be honest seasons in the land pavilion beats most lunches in epcot. i used to enjoy the coral reef but even that has slipped so far down on quality i cant bring myself to go.
