Pre-Trip To the Poly We Will Go!

6 years ago, I graduated from law school, and we scrapped together the money to take my then 3 yo DD to WDW for my graduation celebration. It was during the "Buy 4, get 3 days free" promo, and the total trip was $1,700. We pulled that trip off by the skin of our teeth, and were ecstatic that we could do it.

On that trip, we stayed at the Pop Century. Although we had a wonderful experience there, one of the days of our trip we took a little adventure over to the Poly. My DH and I walked around that hotel with our mouths gaping, and our DD's eyes as big as moons. Everything from the lobby, to the hotel, to the smell, to the view, to the customer service was just awe-inspiring. I stayed at Poly when I was a kid, but I didn't remember it like this. I don't remember being mesmerized by it like I was on that trip.

We have been back to WDW 4 times since then, and have stayed at CS, and WL three times. Every time I went to book those trips, I looked at the Poly. And, every time the price was just out of my reach.

But, yesterday, I was getting ready to book BC (After three stays at WL, we decided it was time for something new), and just our of curiosity, I looked at Poly. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw that the room I was planning to book at BC was only a few hundred dollars off a room at POLY!!!

So, I quickly looked for a video of the poly resort to show my kids (now DD is 9, and DS is 5). They were already set on BC because of the pool, but we were already planning to get the water park pass and go to both water parks, so I had them watch this:

After that, not only were my kids in love with Poly, but my DH and I looked at each other and we knew that this was what we had waited for and we were getting it this trip!

I have gone through the steps of planning this next trip dozens of times before. I get all the way up to "Book" and chicken out. But, we were ready yesterday after watching that video.

As we got to the confirmation page and saw that WE had REALLY just booked the Poly, my DH and I looked at each other and couldn't believe it! It's like we had finally pulled off what we only dreamed about 6 years ago!

So, NOW THE PLANNING BEGINS!!! YAYA!!!!!!!

First things first, we know what difference a bad room location can make, so I started scoping out maps of Poly to figure out where the restaurants are, the boat dock, etc.

I figured out where Captain Cook's was:

And the sushi bar (the DH will LOVE!!)

And the kids will love O'Hana!

So, then I founds this awesome website that talked you through all of the buildings, and which ones we could even request with out room selection (DVC, club level, etc.)

After looking at this, I think my number 1 choice will be Samoa. Number 2 is a toss up between Nive (don't want to get stuck on 2nd level with no elevator) or Rarotonaa (but I don't want to get too far away from the main lobby). So, I'll have to think those over...

We're ~10 months out, so I've still go time to decide on my 180-day dining reservations. But, I want to change things up a bit this time. The only restaurant I know FOR SURE that we refuse to miss is Le Cellier.

Not only are the steaks amazing!!!

But, my mouth literally waters whenever I think about the maple creme brulee

Usually, we leave this dinner for last as a celebratory thing. But, not this time. We'll either eat there the night we arrive, or we'll eat there on day 2 when we go to Epcot. I'm tired of not letting ourselves indulge from the get go!!

We stayed at the hawaii building in August and absolutely loved it. We had a great view of the castle and the overall feel of the resort is so laid back. You will love it

Can you post a link to this site?

Thanks!

Well, I've got my first draft of plans done. But, I've got some issues I think with overbooking meals...

We're staying 7 nights - so we'll have 7TS credits. Right now, I've got us down for:

1900 Park Fare Breakfast (1 TS)
Le Cellier (2TS)
O'Hana Breakfast (1TS)
Hoop Dee Do Review (2TS)
Boathouse (2TS)
Liberty Tree Tavern (1TS)
San Angel Inn (1TS)

I'm thinking we'll just pay out of pocket for one of the character breakfasts since they are relatively cheap. But, that still leaves me over by 2 TS credits.

I can't cut Le Cellier. It's DH and my favorite restaurant ever in WDW. So, that's staying

We've never been to Hoop dee do and I'd love to try it. I think it sounds like an absolute blast.

I really, really, really want to take my kids on the amphicars, and the only way to do that is to eat at Boathouse (plus, I'd like to try it anyway).

So, I'm wondering about cutting Liberty tree (I think it's mediocre), and then just paying out of pocket for both character breakfasts...

IMO, I'd pay out of pocket for LeCell and even 'Ohana.

I agree with your feelings about Liberty but if you did LeCell OOP then you could still keep it.

Definitely pay OOP for breakfasts. I don't think Boathouse is worth 2 credits, though, so you might consider paying OOP there as well, depending on what you're thinking about ordering.

So, I talked to DH, and he's in agreement with this dining plan:

1900 Park Fare Breakfast (1TS)
Le Cellier (2TS)
O'Hana Breakfast (1TS)
Hoop Dee Do Review (2TS)
Boathouse (OOP)
San Angel Inn (1TS)

However, he put the kibosh on the amphicars. He doesn't like how it only fits 3 people and so we'd either have to pay for 2 cars or one person would have to sit out, and that's no fun. So, he wants to do Characters in Flight (all can fit in one ride and cheaper!)

We both still want to try the Boathouse, though. The food is right up our alley, and the environment looks really fun. So, for now we're keeping it in, but it's going to be considered our "OOP" in case we change our mind.

What a fun trip! We are in a similar situation. We normally stay at the Epcot resorts (most recently Boardwalk), but this year we are staying at the Poly. We are so excited!! Like you, I stayed at the Poly with my family as a child and I can not wait to go back with my kids. When we booked we couldn't believe that Poly was only a little more than Boardwalk.

And I am with your husband on the Amphicars. How ridiculous that they do not fit a family of 4. We aren't doing it either for that reason.

Hope you have an amazing trip!

We love the Poly... It's our go to resort for sure! We always stay in Rarotonga and love the proximity to the main lobby. It also has the advantage of being on the TTC side of the resort. Typically a very quiet building, as it borders the quiet pool. BUT depending on the dates of your trip, the quiet pool construction may not be done. We are debating requesting the monorail side of Rarotonga, or trying something new for our December trip.
