To DV or to MiniDV

Well, taxes are behind me and I have rendered unto Caeser. Actually, this year Caeser is rendering onto me; I like that. So I am going to do my part to help the economy and buy myself a new video camera.

The question becomes; DV (Digital 8) versus MiniDV. Here are a few facts:

1. Digital Pictures (still) would not be a big issue, I have my 3 maga pixel cam that I absolutely love. (Canon G1)

2. My PDA, DVD, MP3 player, and most importantly my computer are all Sony products. So - because of the cross compatibility I will be sticking to the Sony brand.

So, my question becomes DV versus Mini DV. Which is a better choice for general all around use; you know, family, Disney, etc. Not planning on making a movie for theatrical release.

Here are some of my thougths:

1. PRO DV - better optical zooms (20X optical, 700 digital); Mini is 10X Optical and 120X digital

2. PRO Mini - smaller unit, less weight

Does anyone have insight beyond into the comparissons between these 2 formats. Price is a considerations, but not the end all be all consideration.

wow, what research! :king:

I've always been told that optical zoom is preferable to digital. So I'd stick to the one that has the higher optical zoom. Plus, I'd also consider how well the camera can handle steady shot with a 20X zoom. The closer you zoom the shakier it gets, at least from my experience.

I have a DV camcorder (Sony TRV-11) and it's extremely easy to download movies to the pc. All I need to do is plug in the wire to the pc & camera and hit record. I'm not too sure about Digital 8? Once it's all set I can easily edit the files and create a DVD or a VCD. Plus given your creativity and knowledge of making movies...it should be a snap. :)

Here are some places that I can think of to do comparison shopping between cameras and formats:
cnet.com
zdnet.com
epinions.com

hope you find the perfect camcorder.
