Can someone fill me in on the rules for tipping at meals on the Disney Dining Plan. I've never used it before, but we have it scheduled for a trip this October and I don't know the protocol. Thanks

Rules? It's not included in the dining plan. But you still tip like you would at any other restaurant. Large parties have an 18% tip automatically added.

The rule is...you still have to tip;)

Here's how it works. At the end of your meal you will still get a bill that lists what it would have cost if you paid cash for your meal. You tip based off of that amount. I believe they even give you suggested tip amounts for 18% and 20%. If you have a party of 6 or more they automatically charge an 18% gratuity but you are free to add more if you choose. You can pay the tip with cash, credit card or with your magic band.

Its included on the double credit experiences I believe. Given our ADR selections and anticipated orders im figuring $30 to $40 per table service meal. Will be bring cash for that. Easy to plan for and execute.

The tips do add up, especially if the DDP is allowing you to try restaurants you wouldn't otherwise try because they are too expensive. Make sure you budget accordingly as the servers deserve to make a fair living. (I'm not a fan of our American tipping system but it's not the server's fault.)

There are no "rules" for tipping. Tipping is an optional, but accepted and expected part of the American restaurant experience so employers do not have to pay wait staff a living wage, thereby keeping menu prices down.

As others have said, you will be presented with a bill showing the amount of a 15%, 18% and 20% tip. Customarily, that amount should be applied to the subtotal of the bill BEFORE taxes are added. However, many restaurants now include the taxes in the suggested tip amount on the bill.

We pretty much know what menu items we want to order ahead of time by researching the restaurants menus before our trip and helping decide which ADR's we want the most. This also gives us a way of figuring out the amount of money to plan on for tips into our budgeting. We usually tip the greater amount because we have rarely have had poor service at the places we dine on property. Those CM's work their tails off keeping guests happy and making your dining experience pleasurable. Watching them deal with some diners.....

Stop tipping and they will just increase the costs 20% at least... So I'm not sure what the difference is.

Wayyyyyyy back in time the tips were included in the DDP. But that was corrected when complaints began to flow about the 'service' declining in that the staff knew that they were getting the tip regardless of quality of service. So.....tip!!

Thanks everyone for the quick responses. I had always intended to TIP, I just didn't know how to find out how much the meals cost. Now I know.

Thanks.

Just make sure to make a "note to self" about any DDP meals where gratuity is included. A few years ago we had dinner at Cinderella's Royal Table and while I was visiting the Ladies' Room at the end of the meal, a family member (who was just trying to do something nice, and didn't realize gratuities were included) paid something like $80 as a tip, on top of the already-included gratuity! I was horrified when I found out -- much later -- but there was no way for her to have known, as the bill said nothing to indicate that gratuity was included, and had a big old space to add a tip, just like any other receipt. So the moral of the story is: remember when the tip is included, because Disney (and your server) will be happy to let you forget it and pay them double.
