Thought's on Mission Space

It appears to me that so far the speculation on the MS ride system is a definite, and that judging from the rotations and
manuevers of the ride system it is very possible to simulate
sustained periods of weightlesness. The only thing left would be
to speculate what kind of immersive environment will the ride contain, there are several possibilities which I believe may be used. First one being that of a circular screen wrapped around the base of the centerfuge, the screen would completely fill the
passengers view from inside the pods and could very easily accompany 3d technology. However the ride could also borrow
the same idea as DCA's Soarin Over California and possibly BTTF the ride by loading passenger's into the ride from a themed queue
then transferring the motionbase into a domed theatre to display
the film. The only option left would be to display a film inside
the cabins with some sort of user interaction as speculated before. In my personal opinion if this is supposed to be the ride
to top Spiderman it better have a very immersive environment.

I would think the last one would be the one disney would go with--it would allow the most guest interaction as everyone could experience different environments. I wanna know how realistic this will be...if everything were generated on a computer, it might not seem all that realistic...

From the original press release and the details, it made it seem like the 1st (well thats the image I got anyway). Which I would love to see. The image I got is that you are sitting in seats and all the walls are video screens so you kind of get lost in the moment and dont even realize you are on a ride anymore.

Really? Can you provide a link to this information? I was under the impression that it would be more like cyber-space mountain. Just one video screen (window) in front.

This is what I had heard as well.

I've never ridden cyberspace mountain. Is the screen a high definition computer screen or is it NTSC quality like some of the other roller coaster simulator pods I've ridden?

If I was an imagineer, I would use several flat HDTV screens to make several windows (like a plane or shuttle cockpit view). There's no way that they could put 70mm film projection on a spinning pod and that would be the only way to make a realistic looking image the size of one big window. But with HDTV video, several smaller windows could be made to look realistic. Just my opinion.

I don' t think it would be projection on the base of the centrifuge because the pods would be spinning too fast around it and you'd have to have some incredibly accurate syncronization to keep the image moving at the exact same speed so it always looks like it's in the same place.

I remember reading that in the press release too. I think it is somewhere on Steve's site. It is supposed to be better than Spiderman, so I doubt it will be the same as Cyber SpaceMountain. Unless the car or pod thing moves around like in Spiderman and you have the cyberspace mountian screen and cars spinning in loops and whatnot.

It's "clamshell" pods. I think that means the top clamps closed overtop of you, so that would be where the image is, and I don't think it could be projected because of the motion.

If the projectors are mounted on the spining armatures or axel it is possible to sync the image. If the devices are over engineered, tight and low vibration, it could work very well. My guess they are 10,000 times tighter than the steering on an american car. Also remember that when you blast off there would naturally be vibrations. Seams, if any, in the screen would go by so fast they would not register. The problem I feel is the loading and that may dictate HDTV screens instead of a circular screen. You would have to load through the screen area. If it blacked out like Star tours back of House then maybe.

I'm wondering what the capacity/hr is going to be. From the overhead pictures it looked like there would be 4 (groups?) of pods. I'm guess the actual ride part would be 4-5 minutes, though w/o detailed info. it's hard to know for sure.

Unfortunately, cyberspace's quality isn't even as good as NTSC. I'm not sure what the actual bitrate is, but I'd compare it to playing a video game on a Nintendo 64. Also, the cyberspace pods use an lcd projector mounted behind/between the 2 passengers. Not only does this mean poor image quality, but shadows on the projection screen caused by any object between the projector and screen (such as someone raising their hands.) Granted this system is the most lightweight system, with weight being an obvious factor when dealing with 3-axis motion.

Cyberspace does impress me, but only because the user creates the ride path (to some extent) and the computer has to piece it all together and render the ride images as well as the motion track. If the ride was not a "build it yourself" type of ride it would not be much different from other carnival-type simulators.
