I just got back from a 3-day/3-night trip to DL, and holy crap was it nuts! I have been there at Christmas, and at other busy times, so I was prepared for the crowds. I new going in it would be packed, and while really don't enjoy the crowds I can deal with them. This was the first time, however, I felt that the cast members at DL were not handling the crowds well at all. Rides were breaking down all over the place, the restrooms were dirty, the trash cans were overflowing, and the cast members did not seem to know how to deal with any of it. Crowd control during parades and fireworks was almost non-existent.

I have been at DL when a ride has gone down, but I have never felt there was a big maintenance problem before. On Sunday alone we were evacuated off of Splash mountain, sat on a train on Big Thunder for 20 minutes before they decided it was broken, and had to find alternate things to ride when Indy, Jungle Cruise, and Astro blasters were down when we went to get it line. At various other points in the weekend Radiator Springs Racers, Grizzly, Screamin, Soarin were also down, and we had other issues with the DL rides on Friday and Saturday too. The fast pass machines and the ticket-takers machines at the entrances were also having problems.

Overall we had a fun trip. It was our first time doing the Halloween party, and it was so fun seeing all of the costumes and the decorations. It was Disneyland, so even with its issues it was still great. That said, it is really frustrating to spend a ton of money for a vacation and to then have so many things broken. I have sort of gotten used to maintenance issues at WDW, but have never felt that DLR was poorly maintained. I am really hoping that this weekend was an aberration and is not the new normal.

I'm constantly being evacuated off Splash Mountain, to the point where I'm afraid to ride it anymore. It isn't cool to break down on. It just sucks.

Yeah, the crowds have been horrendous. I've actually avoided DL for over a week. My therapist is really proud of me.

You didn't find the army of cast members wielding miniature lightsabers yelling at the guests (seriously, can I have that job?) and the maze of ropes that must form some kind of Mondrian painting when viewed from the sky efficient for crowd control in the evening?

You crack me up :D No, actually the light saber wavers were only sort of yelling at guests, but otherwise standing around staring at the crowds in a confused sort of way. For example, for the Paint the Night Parade on Friday, the cast members kept putting up ropes and then taking them back down to put them up somewhere else. Every so often some guy with a clipboard would come by and look unhappy and then the rope moving would start again. I kind of felt bad for them. I was just there in June and their light saber waiving and rope placement were much better coordinated and effective than they were this weekend.

Wow, in 300 or so times going to Disneyland, I've only been evacuated off 2 rides. Space Mountain and the Matterhorn, once each.

I think the only ride I've been evacuated off was Pinocchio and we took the long way out. It just never happens to me.

I'm sorry to hear you encountered so much unpleasantness on your trip! I've never been evacuated off a Disney ride, even at DLP, which is literally falling apart. My last trip to DLR was in June right after the AP blackouts began and the place was humming along quite nicely. I think you may have had the misfortune of visiting at an exceptionally busy time coupled with some very unlucky ride experiences. :(

Agreed. I was there for a couple days 2 weeks ago and crowd levels were insane and the heat and humidity were too! First day it was mid-nineties and so packed we only did 3 rides because everything in DL was an hour plus wait. We basically sought out the nearest AC and had a drink before venturing onward. Day 2 was about 90 and 90% humidity but crowd levels were down a bit. 3rd day was make up day and we tried to hit everything we missed. The one great thing was we were upgraded to a suite at DGCR although we spent only sleeping hours there lol.

DCA is insane when all of Disneyland is pushed over there for Mickey's Halloween Party. Just waves of people as far as the eye can see!

I was there with family for three days about a month ago, Thursday through Saturday. Only Saturday was really crowded, but all three days were hot. However, there were so many ride breakdowns (and some show issues) I thought I was at WDW. BTMRR several times, Space Mountain multiple times, Splash (and lots of static animatronics on the final scene on two different days), Screaming multiple times, Soaring, even the train had to be evacuated after we boarded and waited almost half an hour, and I'm probably forgetting others. No dragon on Fantasmic (which I specifically made a special effort to see since I've never seen the new dragon, and no it wasn't windy). In many, many trips I've never seen so many things break down. I know this is all anecdotal and may just be the luck of the draw, but I also wonder if Disneyland is experiencing some sort of Colglazier effect, which is particularly bad show in the middle of the 60th celebration.

The last time we were there in March out last day was kind of like that. We were evacuated off Buzz, then when we tried to ride it again it broke down while we were in line. We then hit a string of rides (Pirates, HM, Alice and Star Tours) that all went down right when we were getting ready to ride. It was frustrating because it was a really light crowd that day, despite being a weekend and having a cheer convention going on, but we kept getting delayed. We were starting to wonder if did something to tick the cast members off during our trip and this was their revenge.
