Wow, we've been waiting over a year and half for the answer.

If I remember correctly, it was Halloween night October 31, 1939. Can anyone confirm that?

It was actually hit by lightning sometime during construction. So there is the lightning that actually hit, and the lightning that hit for the story.

I heard it was acutally hit by lightning on its opening day...this may have been just a "story," but from what I remember it was from a legimate source
