Any suggestions on things to do in the evening?
Is there any sporting arenas in and around the area that are reachable by public transport, and also in season in August?

Yes on sports reachable by public transit.

As for other things to do around Orlando, take your pick. Central Florida has gained so many additional tourism options in just the past 10 years.
