Trip Report There's a Doctor in the House! A graduation trip report!

Thanks for joining me for my latest trip report. I am embarrassingly far behind in writing these…I have an incomplete report from our 11 day Halloween 2012 adventure sitting on my computer, but thought I’d knock out this quick report first in hopes it would motivate me to finish the other!

Who are we? A Disney crazed family of three: Me (Mike), my DW (Chrissy) and our already Disney obsessed 3yo DD (Addison). This trip was just Chrissy and I as we chose to leave the munchkin home with Nana and d Papa for the weekend!

Us on Halloween Day 2012 - from the yet-to-be-posted trip report!

The reason for the trip (as if one ever really needs a reason for a Disney trip) was to celebrate a major accomplishment. After nearly 7 years of grueling work, Chrissy finished her PhD and is now officially “Dr. Chrissy”. She defended her dissertation on April 19 and we had the trip planned for April 25-28….timed out perfect. We planned to cram A LOT into a very short window of time including all the major rides that we can’t do with DD in tow, dinner at Be Our Guest & Victoria & Albert’s (firsts for us!) and a little “hooding” ceremony at the castle. A little background on how that came about…..Chrissy’s last semester wrapping this degree was more than a little painful. Her dissertation committee dropped the ball on several occasions which caused the defense date to keep moving back. When everything was blowing up she decided NOT to walk in the graduation ceremony because she was hoping to never see this group again! I said “we have to do something to mark the occasion” and she said “I want you to hood me at the castle!” Works for me! I figured out when we could do it and was lucky enough, with about a 6 week notice, to score a reservation at V&A’s for the same night….but more on all that later!

Thursday, April 25 – Arrival Day!
Our flight out on the 25th wasn’t scheduled to leave until 4:45, so we sadly had to wait most of the day. I had just started a new job at the beginning of April, so I needed to work until about 2:00 that day. Chrissy stayed home to finish packing and drove Addie to my parent’s house for her weekend adventure. I had a major event at work that morning that, thankfully, was winding down a bit early, so I was able to leave by 1:45. I ran home, changed, tossed our bags in the car and we were on our way by 2:30. It felt a bit strange to be leaving without Addie but we knew she would be spoiled rotten for a few days, so we quickly moved past that!

We arrived at the airport around 3:30 and were amazed at how fast we were able to move with just the two of us and only carry-on bags! I had checked in online, and we had no checked bags, so we sailed through security and were sitting at the gate 15 minutes later. And who else was there?? CHEERLEADERS! Ugh…a whole squad was on our flight headed to a WDW competition. Normally it wouldn’t have bothered me but this group was under the impression that everyone at the gate was there to watch them so we had to endure cheers, screams and watching them stack in a pyramid so their “Dance Moms” moms could take 500 pictures before take-off. Thankfully boarding began and since they had their junk scattered far and wide, the rest of the passengers were able to form a line before they could collect their stuff! We took off on time, and ate some dinner (Chrissy was thoughtful enough to grab some Subway sandwiches before we left!) while we enjoyed an uneventful flight.

We landed around 7:30, 15 minutes ahead of schedule, and took off for DME. We kept laughing because there must have been a “Slow moving herd” convention in town! Every time we’d move past one huge group of slow moving people, we’d get stuck behind another. Luckily, with only our carry-on bags and no kid, we were able to dodge and weave successfully on our way to DME.

We checked in, waited about 20 minutes and were on the bus. Unfortunately, it was another 20 before we left, but we were happy to hear that our stop, Old Key West, was first! Originally we planned on staying at BW or BC but our dates kept changing for so long, by the time we found a weekend, they were booked. In fact, the ONLY property with DVC availability that weekend was OKW. Oh well, a new adventure![/URL][/URL]

Looking forward to reading about your trip report. My DW and I took a 10th anniversary trip, just the two of us, at the end of February and it is amazing the difference without kids.

Congratulations to Dr. Chrissy, what a fabulous accomplishment! So great you two could celebrate together in WDW. Looking forward to more.

We arrived and proceeded to check in and discovered we had been assigned to a wheelchair accessible room. Normally I wouldn’t care, but it was one of the rooms with the roll-in tub/showers and I hate those. Water all over the floor, etc. We asked if it was possible to switch and the cast member was less than helpful. She told me that I had specifically requested this type of room…um, no. But because I had requested it, she was unable to make the change. Not wanting to waste more time, I took the keys and we headed to bell services. They immediately drove us to the room and we changed quickly to head back out. I decided to let the room go for the night and I would call in the morning to make a change.

We only waited about 15 minutes until a bus arrived and we FINALLY made it to MK at 9:50. The park was open until 11 that night so we were determined to make the most of our hour!

We watched Wishes as we made our way down Main Street en route to our first destination – Big Thunder Mountain! One of our all-time favorites that we missed on our last trip. Maybe we’re crazy, but neither of us enjoys doing rider swap or riding the big rides alone, so when Addie is with us, we tend to skip them all together. We were able to walk right on to BTM and had a blast. We stopped next door at SM and walked right on but got SOAKED! We didn’t necessarily want to walk around all night wet, but there you have it. We dried off a bit and went to Liberty Square in search of snacks…well, in search of ONE snack. A chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwich from Sleepy Hollow – my all-time favorite! While we were in line, we met a very nice couple from Hawaii who were visiting WDW for the first time. They were trying to decide what snack to order and I talked her into the ice cream sandwich. She LOVED it and we posed for this picture….always fun to meet new people in the World!

This is the second time we took a trip without the kiddo....definitely some guilt, but always nice to get away for a few days! Amazing how much faster we moved through the parks!

We leave for WDW and a 7-night DCL next week for our 10 year anniversary....although this time the kiddo comes along!

We decided to wander through the shops on Main Street while enjoying our snacks and ended up at the Chapeau to purchase one of the top-of-our-list items for the weekend: Graduation Ears! Had them personalized with “Doctor” across the back and I made Chrissy pose in all her PhD glory!

After the ears were purchased and ice cream devoured, we discussed heading out to DtD. There were a few things we wanted to shop for and we thought it would be a nice way to end the evening. A quick stroll to the Contemporary and a DtD bus pulled up. It quickly became obvious that we were both tired and not thinking straight once we hopped on the bus. For some reason, we both had it in our heads that the shops were open until 1:00 AM (which is closing time for the entire area). We’ve done these late night DtD runs a thousand times and know full well that the stores close at 11:00 PM, but for some reason, on this evening, that fact eluded us. We didn’t make it there until 12:20 and were dropped off at PI rather than the Marketplace. Why? Well, because the stores were closed! Both Chrissy and I stood in the Marketplace and had one of those Oh S**t moments!! So frustrating because we had wasted about 90 minutes in the MK (open until 1:00 AM that night) to travel this way and it was all for nothing. Even more frustrating when we realized we’d have to walk all the way over to PI to catch a bus back to OKW. We were finally dropped off at the resort by 1:00 AM (with our stop being the last, of course!). Not wanting to end the day on a sour note, we decided to take a dip in the pool, only to realize that we had both failed to pack our suits! There was nothing open at the resort, so we admitted defeat and returned to our room. In bed around 1:45 we both fell asleep vowing to make Friday a better day!

Our 7:00 AM wake-up call came far earlier than our bodies would have liked, but when you’re at Disney, that never seems to matter much. First mission of the day – try to get out of the wheelchair room. I called the front desk to request a room change and spoke to a wonderful cast member. He was able to move us over to a regular room one building over, but we would need to check out and check back in. We got ready, packed up our stuff, called bell services for a ride and were at the front in no time.

Ready for the bus!

They were checking our bags just as the bus for our first destination of the day arrived – DHS. We arrived around 8:40 and were surprised to see the gates already open. The park was scheduled to open at 9 and there were no EMH that day, but I was not about to complain.
Made it through bag check, I grabbed our tickets and sprinted to TSM for FP’s. I was pleasantly surprised when our FP’s popped out for 9:45 – already the day was smooth sailing!

Chrissy caught up and we noticed the stand-by line wasn’t too bad, so we jumped in line. Practically walked on and, for the first time ever, Chrissy BEAT my score on TSM!!!

While she was basking in her triumph, I convinced myself that something must have been wrong with my gun…yeah, that’s it…something was wrong with it. Impossible that my perfect streak could be upset on this most perfect of mornings. I let myself believe this as we strolled down to RRC and, again, walked right on!

We hadn’t done this ride in quite some time and it certainly helped shake off any remaining cobwebs from our late night/early morning. We grabbed a couple FP’s for later and decided breakfast at Starring Rolls was in order. A chocolate chip muffin for me and a croissant for Chrissy. Delicious as always! After breakfast, it was already time for our FP’s on TSM. I hauled my bruised ego back to the Midway and set things right with the universe when I regained my rightful spot as champion of TSM!

Without a kiddo along for the ride, we discussed taking a somewhat leisurely pace to the morning. We walked through the parks and checked out shops and corners of DHS that we hadn’t had time to visit in a few trips.

She headed over to watch a street show while I walked on. Well, walk isn’t the best way to put it. I shuffled in a slow death march through the queue while the family in front of me yelled into a cell phone as they lost signal deeper into the building and their son decided it was imperative to climb on every railing along the way. It was seriously that family and me in an empty queue and they would not let me pass. We finally made it to the top and I was thrilled when they directed me into the small FP line so I could escape this group (who were STILL trying to talk on a phone with no signal). Star Tours was fun – definitely not one of my top rides in the park but I enjoyed it and liked the updates off the old version.[/URL][/URL]

Amazing how much faster you can browse without having a munchkin to corral! We found a nice couple
headed into the park and gave them our RRC FP’s, chose Epcot as our next destination and walked to the boat dock.

The boat ride was perfect and we deiced to get off at the Swan/Dolphin and walk to Epcot via the Boardwalk. We both love this area and are excited to be staying at BWV again this fall. We arrived at Epcot around 11:45 and the park was crazy busy. The Flower and Garden Festival was in full swing and seemed to be bigger and more crowded than we’d ever seen. We headed right to Soarin’ to grab FP’s – return time was 2:00 which was much better than anticipated! So far, so good!

We were both getting hungry and chose to snack our way through the F&G kiosks. First stop was the Pineapple Promenade for a Dole Whip (because every proper meal should begin with a Dole Whip). Chrissy opted for the original while I decided to enjoy mine with a bit of rum. Both were delicious and I will say that the rum was a fantastic addition. On our way into the World Showcase, we stopped off at the Odyssey Center to pick up our new “credit card” AP’s. I had received an email about this prior to the trip so we decided to take advantage of our location and get it done. The line moved quickly and we were in and out in less than 10 minutes.

For some reason, the pork sliders at the American Adventure sounded really good, so we bypassed half of the showcase and b-lined our way to that kiosk. They were fantastic and well worth the walk. Next stop was Japan for the shrimp and salmon dish which was delicious. Both Chrissy and I were intrigued by the concept of “frushi” – the fruit sushi dish at this pavilion, so we have it a whirl. It was so good, we ended up going back for another order. It was strange, but delicious. Plus, it’s just fun to say! In fact, we spent the rest of the afternoon laughing about the number of times we heard people discussing or questioning “frushi” throughout the World Showcase!

We were cautious not to stuff ourselves knowing that we had our much anticipated dinner at Victoria & Albert’s later that night. We chose to walk off our lunch through the WS and enjoy the live music, topiaries and amazing gardens. Next up was Mousegear for a little shopping. We are building a new house next spring and decided the new garden was in need of a couple Mickey/Minnie garden statues and a bird bath. Chrissy picked up a F&G Festival pin and we had it all shipped home. With my wallet a bit lighter, we hit up Art of Disney in search of anything that peaked our interest. Sadly, not much was new since our trip last fall, so we moved on.

SSE was next – always relaxing but the ride must have stopped a dozen times before our return trip to Earth. Don't ask me why, but making stupid faces on this ride to enjoy on the return trip to Earth always makes me smile!

Since we had skipped pretty much all of Future World, it was time to check out the new TT. Loved the new queue and had fun building the cars. The ride itself was OK – I wasn’t overly impressed BUT I was highly disappointed that the ride broke down and we were stuck for over 20 minutes sitting in the car! To make it worse, we had chosen to hit up the single rider line so we weren’t even in the same car. That kind of put a damper on the whole TT experience for us – perhaps better luck next time. Thankfully we still had phone signal so we passed the time texting each other and posting Instagram photos!
