Theme Park Rant: Pokemon Taking Over Spider-Man

Pokemon will officially replace Spider-Man in Universal Osaka and maybe even at IOA. But I can’t be more upset about it. Now, people attack Disney a lot for good reason, but I feel like Universal also does a lot similar to Disney, and it’s not as talked about. Maybe it’s because stuff like Universal’s okay food quality or overpriced express passes have always been there. But retheming a ride when it’s re-themed doesn’t even fit within the ride, and it feels even worse than Splash Mountain’s re-theme!

Now when I think about a Pokemon ride, I think about a ride closer to Yoshi’s Adventure at Osaka or some sort of slow-moving ride with maybe a camera mechanic like Pokemon Safari. NOT a fast-paced ride that utilizes a lot of screens that throw you around. Now don’t get me wrong, I love Spider-Man, but it does not fit within Pokemon AT ALL! I don’t see Pokemon meshing well with Spider-Man as a ride.

There’s also a rumour going around saying that the ride would also utilize the same VR system as Mario Kart… NO! For some reason Mario makes me more nauseous than Forbidden Journey or even Velocicoaster for crying out loud. And meshing that with Spider-Man’s motion is just gonna make me more nauseous. I like the food at Universal Osaka, but I don’t wanna see it again after getting off the ride.

This also brings up another point of mine about how this might lead us down a rabbit hole of every Nintendo ride just being this same VR system but themed to Zelda or Kirby. I don’t like that idea. at that point, it just feels like reskins, and I know that Pokemon is gonna be different than Mario Kart. I mentioned that earlier, but it feels like they just slapped that mechanic on. I get how it’s supposed to feel like a video game, but imagine trying to aim while being tossed around like a bag of potatoes while you hear Charizard screaming in the background. It doesn't make any sense.

There’s also the chance that if we do get the Pokemon ride here, it might retheme Marvel landing altogether. Now, I do get how Universal and Marvel’s contract is slowly phasing out, but I don’t like the idea of Pokemon taking it over. Pokemon is built around exploring the forest, looking for wild creatures, and putting that in the only land in the whole park that’s focused around a big city feels counterproductive. I also just can’t see one of the only B & M Launch coasters being rethemed to a franchise literally meaning Pocket Monsters.

Now I’m sure that the people at Universal Osaka are gonna do amazing on the ride, but I just can’t help but feel scared and a little bit upset at the idea overall. Personally, I think if Pokemon was to take over “a” space in Universal Orlando, it would be Toon Lagoon. It’s a land that isn’t too popular, and the layout feels perfect for a land that’s focused on wild animals. That’s just my thoughts though, sorry if I sounded like I rambled.

Its not like that had a choice. They failed to renew the 20 year old licensing that was in place for Marvel characters in Japan so they closed the ride on the 22nd of January... just like Disney did with the Great Movie Ride when they failed to renew the MGM rights.

I understand that aspect, but I feel like Pokemon just isn't the right choice for the ride.

Just because Pokemon is replacing Spider-Man in Japan, that doesn't mean it's happening in Orlando. In fact I can guarantee it's not. Different contract, different circumstances. I don't know what to think of a Pokemon overlay for Spider-Man, but it isn't coming here, so I also don't really care enough to form an opinion.

Not (likely, because nothing is ever 100% certain, but 99.99999999% sure) happening, and not sure where you got the idea the Marvel contract is slowly phasing out, because that's definitely not happening.

But anyway, a lot of the games take place in cities and towns, the most recent movie was almost entirely in a big city with a lot of action. There's plenty of room for action and adventure within Pokemon if the ride in Osaka ends up with similarly intense programming. That's a big if, because while the ride system has only been used for intense, action-packed stories so far (at least as far as I'm aware, Pan at TDS is a little more chill but still a lot of motion), that's not the ONLY way it can be used. Do we even know 100% that they're just keeping everything the same and swapping out Spiderman for Pokemon themeing? What little I've read suggests it's a complete gut of the building, so probably even a different ride system. Just seems like an awful lot to get upset about when everything is still largely unknown. They haven't even said that Pokemon is replacing Spiderman, it's entirely a rumor.

No, not yet, but that seems to be the only rumor for it. The park needs as much capacity as it can get, so I can’t imagine whatever replaces it takes much longer than 2027, maybe 28.
