The Travel Insurance...

To WDW, we haven't. On DCL, especially with significant airfare and foreign destinations, we have. We used independent travel insurance. Some good, some bad (Al*****). Had to buy within a certain time from reservation. Usually peace of mind. Just one was a headache to deal with. Questions we always asked ourselves included how much $ was insurance, how much we could lose if we had a problem arise, and what is likelihood of problem. Pseudo-actuarialism

I'm not a fan of the insurance, that being said I did purchase it. On our last trip my children were sick in the days leading up to the trip. This caused us to look into what was needed to be allow to cancel. Basically the doctor would have had to say no travel and put that in writing. Long story short he didn't so off to Orlando we went. The kids got better but my wife spent two days in the room after getting sick herself. I got to take the kids around and check in on her.

I'll probably still buy it next time because if we do end up in that situation it would be nice to not be able to go and get the money back but I also now realize the situations where that is the reality are small.

I just got insurance for my 95 year old mama for her return trip to Florida in a few because. Last month her 87 year old "boy" friend was going to come up for a visit but ended up in the hospital. He didn't have insurance on his ticket, but JetBlue gave him a voucher to use the ticket within one year. Turns out there's a wedding in our family next year, so he'll use it then. It was so great of JetBlue to accommodate under the circumstance (I did have to provide the doctor's name and hospital he was at).

Do any of you pay for that when you book your WDW trip or add it later before paying it all off?

When I first book... but it also depends on the time of year I am going. If it is during hurricane season I buy it, if it isn't then I don't. Hurricanes are the only thing I expect would screw up a vacation.

When we book it...and I would not be without it either!

Broken limbs, car wrecks, family illness, flu...anything you can name can happen and there is no way I would want to be out all that money knowing that such a small amount of money for insurance could have taken care of it.
Same. It's such a small amount to pay it's a no-brainer for me.

Those "plans" are often not as inclusive as you think if you don't read the terms. Like most insurance on discretionary purchases, it's just a money maker.

My Credit card offers travel accident, travel delay, travel cancellation, lost luggage, and emergency assistance services. When I book with that, I feel secure enough. Check the terms of your card to see if it offers the same. And always check what you're buying for peace of mind...you might be upset if you ever have to make a claim.

For my family of 4 the insurance on our December 2014 trip was $200. It includes 100% trip cancellation including prepaid airfare for getting laid off of work, sickness or being called into military service. It also includes $25,000 of emergency medical expense, $25,000 of rental car insurance, $2000 in lost baggage and several other insurances. For me, that $200 is absolutely worth the risk should a family member get sick right before our trip or I'd unexpectedly get laid off.

Not really true of the one that is direct through Disney...I cannot speak for others but I maintain it is well worth it. I (proudly) no longer hold any credit cards:) other than debit.

We also get it on every trip (through Disney). When your spending $5k whats another $150. Coming from Michigan and traveling in the winter months its worth it to protect us against airport shutdown due to snow and ice.

For us, the cost of the WDW trip insurance is so minimal compared to the overall trip cost that we always opt for it. Better to have it and not need it, than the other way around, IMO.

Rental car insurance is another one. I always get it. Two year ago I needed to rent a car and when posed the question I wavered and felt that I shouldn't get it that homeowners & credit card coverage should be fine. Then the agent says...but if anything happens you won't need to do a thing with our coverage. So, I opted for the insurance coverage and I'm glad I did. The next day at 11 in the morning the car was totaled and I was being sued for a cool million. The other driver's attorney was calling me for information and I told him that I had insured through the rental agency and that he should be dealing with them. Of course, he already knew that but I just think he was fishing for more info. I haven't heard anything about it since.

Never done it, not even for our cruise next month. Looks like hurricane season will be slow again this year - all of them seem to prefer the Pacific. Lived in Florida nearly 50 years and have been through only TWO hurricanes, so I'm not worried.

We purchase travel insurance, but not the kind offered by WDW. As soon as I book a vacation, I buy a separate policy from TravelGuard which, if you buy it within 15 days or so of your initial deposit for the vacation costs, covers cancellation of your trip for any reason. (I get just enough to cover the non-refundable components of the trip.) Our vacations are few and far between and we spend thousands on them, so as far as I'm concerned, it's worth it to spend another $100 more to "protect our investment" if something happens.
