The Tower of Terror lights up - report

Yesterday was a special lighting ceremony for out Tower of
Terror (Friday the 13th.)

The band you see is called something like the Bellhops.
They played a couple songs to warm up the crowd. Then
Gallagher came out and goofed around for a bit. Sorry - no
watermelons but he did toss out candy and marshmallows.
Why did he do that?

Well, in order to get the Tower to light the screams had to be
loud enough. He wanted us hyped on sugar.

The show started with a 3 person screaming contest in which
we, by applause, voted on the loudest. She then stepped up
to the microphone. The Tower cutout you see in some of the
pics has floor 13 as the highest. If the scream reaches there,
the Tower lights.

She screamed and it went to 4.

So they bring out the Guiness World Record holder. Her scream
went to 7. They screamed together and we got to 9. They
invited the crowd to help and we got to 11.

Then Gallagher tossed out more sugar. The countdown begins
and we let lose our scream and hit 13.

Lightning hits, sparks fly, the sing pops and sizzles -
eventually lighting up.

And of couse the message pops up, Open May 2004. (In case
you are wondering it will be May 5th for public.)

And now the anticipation builds.

I have posted hi-rez photos of the event in alt.binaries.mulimedia.disney. I have also posted reduced images in the Photo Gallery here in WDWMAGIC. Follow this link to the first one. There are 6 images in the series numbered 11 to 16. (That is the proper order)

If only Gallagher's tennis swing had been a bit better, I might've gotten candy!! Since I went to the 4:45 Aladdin show (HotNewAladdin!!) I ended up back by Cruella DeVil's trailer... but I had a great view of the Tower. Love the pyro effects when the sign lit up, I think it worked very well! I took a lot of film photos... unfortunately I gotta wait til I finish the roll to get them developed. :P I taped the show, too, but since I was running out of tape, a lot of it was a "highlights" video... and the guy in front of me decided to put his daughter on his shoulders and then keep moving around, so I had a hard time trying to tape around him.

That's cool, we were staying at the Grand Californian this past week and saw them playing around with lighting schemes around 1am on Tues or Wed night. We were wondering what they were planning!

Yes, I believe so - I had the entire tower in the initial effect and then zoomed in on the sign itself for effects 2 and 3 and then medium shot for the Coming May 2004 spot.

They're kind of visible, it really depends on where you are. If you're someplace higher up like the Matterhorn, Maliboomer, California Screamin', Matterhorn, etc., then yes, they're very visible. But I never have really noticed them like when I'm just walking around the park.

The only spot where you can see outside the park is if you are just within the gates of Disneyland - before you go under the tracks. From there you can see the abck of a couple buidlings, the Tower, and Grizzly Peak.

Likewise at DCA you would need to be near the gate to see into Disneyland - and only then you might see the Matterhorn or Space Mtn.
